Celebration of Worship Next Week

Sunday, July 15, 2012 As you prepare for worship, consider these words from Aristotle. “You will never do anything in this world without courage. It is the greatest quality of the mind next to honor.” And now reflect on these words from the Apostle Paul talking about a Christian, “Welcome him in the Lord with great joy, and honor men like him, because he almost died for the work of Christ, risking his life to make up for the help you could not give me.” Courage and honor. Christ and suffering. Allow these thoughts to prepare you for worship.

What’s ironic about the PCH highways is that those who walk the path discover that the attributes of religious life that seem so important to please God become like trash compared to knowing Christ. This journey of faith is more about knowing Christ than about letting others see just how religious we are. If you’ve never been to a trash heap, you’ll not want to miss this visit. You’ll discover the power of losing everything for the sake of gaining the most important thing in this life and eternity. Yeah, it’s that important. I hope you’ll join us as we continue our walking tour through Philippi.

Offertory: “I Dreamed a Dream/It’s Not in Vain”

One day on their way to the place of prayer, Paul and his companions met a slave-girl possessed by a spirit by which she predicted the future. Her owners were making large profits from her ability. The girl followed Paul and his companions shouting, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved.” She kept this up for many days until Paul finally commanded the spirit to “come out of her”, which it did. With the hope of profit now gone, the owners of the girl seized Paul and Silas and dragged them to the authorities, telling them that they were advocating practices unlawful for Roman citizens. A mob develops and Paul and Silas are beaten and then thrown into prison. About midnight, as Paul and Silas are singing praises to God, a violent earthquake shakes the city, and the prison doors fly open and the chains came loose. The jailer, scared for his life, listens to Paul preach to him and his family. That night they believed in the Lord and were baptized. They washed Paul’s and Silas’s wounds and prepared a meal for them. There was much joy in the jailer’s house that night.
