A Home to Fulfill our Mission
In 2017 Montclair Film opened the doors to its new home at the Investors Bank Film & Media Center. Since then, our organization has flourished into an arts and film non-profit that provides enriching programming and educational opportunities to our community all year long. Our center features: Cinema505, a state-of-the-art theater for film screenings, performing arts (music, theater, improv comedy), and private events

Dynamic Program Touches Lives
505 Films + Friends is a unique program that serves our community of young adults of all abilities by inspiring creativity, building confidence, and empowering members with important social skills. This inclusive film and social club meets bi-weekly, inviting young adults to gather to watch and discuss films in a safe and comfortable space, where sound and lighting can be adjusted to be more sensory friendly. A teaching artist and a licensed psychologist lead post-screening discussions using themes from the films to explore social issues, filmmaking techniques, and life skills. The club has had a positive impact on its members, with most participants returning session after session, and many having continued their new friendships outside the club. Parents have remarked that the program has filled a void. There’s nothing like this program offered for teens and young adults in this area.
My son enjoys attending 505 Films & Friends and always comes home with some interesting insights about the film and often about himself. The moderators do a wonderful job of engaging the participants during the discussion sessions, connecting themes to relevant topics of the day and/or lives of our young adults.

MONTCL AIR FILM + EDUCATION
Filmmaking in the Curriculum Building on the success of the Film Academy, Montclair Film + Education launched their in-school Filmmaking in the Curriculum initiative by partnering with Immaculate Conception High School for a 12-week filmmaking pilot program.
As part of the curriculum, students learned the fundamentals of filmmaking from pre- through post-production. Working as a team, the students wrote, directed, shot, edited, and acted in an original short film, cultivating their creative voices through the making of a cinematic story. At the conclusion of the workshop, the young filmmakers screened their film for two standing room only crowds at a red carpet reception in Montclair Film’s Cinema505. This filmmaking pilot helped students develop 21st century skills to support their creative and academic development and provided a foundation to further explore a wide range of professional careers.
Montclair Film provided a unique experience for our students to get an in-depth and hands-on experience in the world of filmmaking. Our students were able to see just how much goes into the production of one film, push themselves to meet deadlines, and create their own film. This program provided them with the platform to use their natural talents while discovering new skills and areas of interest. We couldn’t be more thrilled with this partnership. FILM + EDUCATION OUTREACH BEYOND MONTCLAIR Our in-school filmmaking programs and free courses, scholarships, and mentorship opportunities provide access to a diverse group of students throughout New Jersey. With demand for our innovative education programs continually growing, we bring these opportunities into local schools and community education organizations. Some of these programs include filmmaking at Newark’s North Star Academy and film classes for local senior citizens through the Montclair Institute for Lifelong Learning. We are always seeking new, high-impact opportunities for partnership.

Celebrating the Art of Storytelling PERFORMANCE In 2018, Montclair Film welcomed writer/ performer and MacArthur Fellow Taylor Mac to our film festival to share A 24-DECADE HISTORY OF POPULAR MUSIC, an evening of song and storytelling seeking to build community at the intersection of art, American history, and our collective civic responsibility. The sold-out evening brought people together in new, meaningful ways, all while creating an unforgettable experience for our audience. Having Taylor with us to share this profoundly moving, often hilarious performance underscores Montclair Film’s commitment to celebrating world-class storytellers working in all forms.

ANNUAL FUNDRAISER Each year, Montclair Film brings our annual fundraising event to the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) for a night of conversation with our host, Stephen Colbert, for over 3,000 patrons. In 2018, Stephen welcomed Academy Award® winning New Jersey native Meryl Streep to the stage for a once-in-a-lifetime discussion of her career and creative process. This event remains the organization’s biggest night, bringing names like Jimmy Fallon, John Oliver, Samantha Bee, Jon Stewart, and Steve Carell, to help raise funds for our mission to educate and entertain through the power of storytelling. MUSIC Since 2017, Montclair Film has partnered with Joe McGinty & The Loser’s Lounge to create a special night that celebrates the power of music to bring people together. Featuring live performances from stars like Jon Batiste, Stephen Colbert, Patrick Wilson, and Warren Zanes, our annual party packs the floor for a night of dancing and fun for the entire community.
SUMMER OUTDOOR FILM SERIES Montclair Film’s annual Summer Series is celebrating its 10th year. STORYTELLING Montclair Film’s StorySLAM series features members of our community telling personal narratives to sold-out audiences. Each evening is organized around a theme, with storytellers using their unique voices to discover and deliver their own sometimes heartbreaking, often humorous, tales. In addition, the Storytelling Studio, a state-of-the-art audio recording space, provides a home to local podcasters. The studio also serves as a home for young people to record and tell their own stories through our education programs, including the popular Slam My Story! program, which uses the college application essay process to teach storytelling skills to high school students.

Montclair Film Festival FILM remains the foundation of our programming. We showcase over 150 films and 200 film industry guests from all over the globe at the annual Montclair Film Festival. Additionally, Cinema505 has allowed us to create year-round screening opportunities for newly distributed films, classic and repertory programs, local filmmakers, documentary storytellers, short-form works, family and educational screenings, and community partners, often with a discussion following the screening. We continue to present the best in film for audiences seeking stories that engage and inspire conversation.

Volunteers + Interns
Montclair Film is made up of people creating positive change through the arts. The leaders have undoubtedly inspired me to grow into a more engaged member of the community. Witnessing the impact that the programs, events, and films have on individuals makes contributing effortless. The organization has led me to pursue my own passion of cinema by giving me the opportunity to work in a variety of different roles. From intern to editor, from production assistant to projectionist, my entire experience continues to be rewarding.

Montclair Film volunteers and interns are a diverse team of community enthusiasts comprised of professionals, stay-at home parents, retirees, seniors, teens, and young adults. Thanks to this dedicated and energetic group, we accomplish goals year-round that are beyond the capacity of our small professional staff. Hundreds of volunteers, interns, and an active Board of Trustees ensure Cinema505, the education programs, and our festival run smoothly. Our volunteer program is a model across the region, with many organizations reaching out to learn from our success. We’ve created an annual volunteer fair that invites nonprofits across disciplines to interact with our volunteers, creating more opportunity for everyone. In addition, our intern program has prepared many of its students to move onto jobs in the industry.
875 shifts during our 10-day festival A nnual value of volunteers topped $290,000 last year!
Montclair Film was created to build community. Collaborations with local and regional partners across disciplines have been key to our success. Using film as a springboard to explore topics as varied as challenging mental health stigmas, organ donation, autism in the black community, motherhood, human rights, climate change, animal conservation, and a celebration of cancer survivors to name just a few, we strive to create a community forum to build new audiences using the power of visual storytelling to connect communities. Montclair is a cultural icon in New Jersey with an identity rooted in diversity, representing all walks of life. One of our taglines, KEEP CONNECTING, ties together the ideas of Story, Connection, and Personal Journey. The Montclair African American Heritage Foundation (MAAHF) Historical Trolley Tour was a hit. It was a real treat to stop by Cinema505 at the end of both tours to view a clip of the 1932 Oscar Micheaux film, THE LADY FROM CHICAGO, which was shot on location in Montclair. Our tour group loved it, not to mention the popcorn and the voucher to see a film of choice at the cinema. Your partnership added something extra special to our tour.
