We’ll meet Leah Walbon, a remarkable Great Falls woman with a sharp eye at the pool table. She’ll sink a few shots and share stories from her incredible 100 years of living. In Lincoln we’ll meet members of the Sitch family, who run a fun co-ed basketball tournament that keeps their late father’s memory alive. Pete Sitch, who died in a logging accident, was a strong supporter of local sports. The tournament celebrates athletics and good sportsmanship. In Billings, we meet Lou Adler, the “King of the One Armed Bandits.” He buys, sells and restores antique slot machines. At any one time, he has nearly 300 machines, in what his wife calls “a hobby gone wrong.” The Alberton High School Panthers might be the most-photographed team in Class C. For more than 40 years Rae Deschamps has patrolled the sidelines, snapping big plays, small miracles and thousands of memories. With Alberton combining with Superior for sports, Rae’s career may be coming to an end. William Marcus hosts the program from the historic M&M Bar in uptown Butte. PHOTO BY JOHN TWIGGS

On this episode, curlers slide into Havre for the annual bonspiel where we follow a team from the small north central town of Rudyard as they compete in one of the oldest team sports known to man. Backroads highlights two young rodeo stars-in-the-making from Worden at the Little Britches Rodeo in Laurel. Hot Spring’s Troy DeRoche first began playing his Native American flutes as a way to sell them. But it’s his music that has taken him around the world. And along a secondary road, we’ll explore the subtleties of “the old fashioned country hello.” At the monthly square dance in Plains, Backroads of Montana host William Marcus tries his hand at the do-si-do and dance calling.

Pioneered by John Bozeman and others beginning in 1863, the Bozeman Trail became a flash point for a clash of cultures that would explode into warfare, destruction and tragedy. The dynamic events that transpired during the five years of Bozeman Trail era changed this part of the American west forever.MTPBS-HD: Monday, 12/9 at 4am & 10:30am, Thursday, 12/12 at 7pm, Saturday, 12/14 at 12noon • MTPBS-Create: Sunday, 12/8 at 7:30pm, Sunday, 12/15 at 3pm Storm of the Century: the Blizzard of ’49  Nebraska, Colorado, South Dakota and Wyoming were hammered by blizzards lasting from January to April 1949. These impressive fish, the largest and one of the oldest in North America, were an important part of the tribe’s diet and the inspiration for their elegant sturgeon-nosed canoes. Now, dikes and dams have changed the river system so much that sturgeon no longer successfully reproduce. But the people whose culture is bound up with these fish and the people who control the river today are working together to restore the Kootenai River White Sturgeon to their ancestral home. Few towns in Montana have undergone a community comeback as striking as that of tiny Philipsburg. A deeply depressed former mining town in the 1980s, “P-burg” has spent three decades restoring its historic downtown and building a reputation as Big Sky Country’s “Comeback Kid.” Documentary filmmaker Jim Jenner was both an eyewitness and early investor in this heartwarming rebirth, buying a vacant building that’s now a vibrant historic hotel and retail space. Jenner blends historic and current footage with dozens of interviews of the natives and newcomers who engineered an economic reinvention so profound it has won national recognition. Boots

Great Performances FRIDAY, DECEMBER 6  8PM

Kinky Boots is the 2013 Broadway blockbuster with music and lyrics by pop icon Cyndi Lauper, a book by Tony-winning theater legend Harvey Fierstein and direction and choreography by Tony winner Jerry Mitchell (“La Cage aux Folles”) that went on to pick up every major Best Musical award, including the Tony, the GRAMMY and London’s Olivier Award. Based on true events, this big-hearted hit tells the story of two people with nothing in common—or so they think. Charlie is a British shoe factory owner struggling to save his family business. Lola—originally known as Simon from Clapton—is a fabulous nightclub entertainer with a wildly exciting idea. With a little compassion and a lot of understanding, this unexpected duo learns to embrace their differences and create a line of sturdy, stiletto-heeled boots for an entirely new clientele. In the end, their most meaningful achievement is their friendship. Great Performances presents the London production, featuring its original West End stars: Matt Henry in his Olivier-winning performance as Lola and Killian Donnelly as Charlie. The Bozeman Trail’s importance in the early history of Wyoming and Montana cannot be disputed. During the brief few years this 500-mile long trail existed, seminal events on or near the trail defined the settling of the American west. The Bozeman Trail was an offshoot of the Oregon Trail, a shortcut to the newly discovered gold fields of Montana Territory. Pioneered by John Bozeman and others beginning in 1863, the Bozeman Trail cut through the heart of Indian country. It became a flash point for a clash of cultures that would explode into warfare, destruction and tragedy.

7:00 MT Fish Between the Falls Ten thousand years ago Kootenai people painted pictures of white sturgeon on the rocks above the lake where they lived. These impressive fish were an important part of the tribe’s diet and the inspiration for their elegant sturgeon-nosed canoes. Now, dikes and dams have changed the river system so much that sturgeon no longer successfully reproduce. But the people whose culture is bound up with these fish and the people who control the river today are working together to restore the Kootenai River White Sturgeon to their ancestral home. TV-G

End of an Era All things must end, and sadly, after 40 years, the producers of Nightly Business Report have decided to cease production at the end of December. The final broadcast will be Friday, December 27th. At the time of publication, we have not yet identified a replacement program, but we are diligently looking for a daily financial news program worthy of replacing the highly regarded NBR.

Field Trip with Curtis Stone Premieres Thursday, December 19th SERIES AIRS DAILY 4:30PM & 7:30PM

In Field Trip with Curtis Stone, chef Curtis Stone embarks on a global culinary journey to explore the spirit and passion of the destinations which inform the menu at Maude, his Michelin-starred restaurant in Beverly Hills. Curtis and friends travel to Australia, Italy, Spain and California, hunting pheasants, herding cattle and diving for pearls as they track the delicacies Curtis serves in his restaurant to their source. Pictured: Cheese, wine, and steak lovers unite as Curtis and key players from Maude travel to the misty mountains of Spain. COURTESY OF HAMES STURCKE, FIELD TRIP WITH CURTIS STONE, AND APT.
