Many Thanks to Peggy! After nearly 20 years of public service and leadership in our fight against hunger, Montana Food Bank Network CEO Peggy Grimes has announced her retirement. We’d like to take this moment to thank Peggy for her compassion— and recognize her tremendous contribution to the good work that we do. Peggy began her career with the Montana Food Bank Network in the spring of 1993. At that time there was no warehouse, no semi-trucks and no other staff. Under Peggy’s leadership (and thanks in large part to generous donors and collaboration with other feeding agencies) MFBN has grown into a 26,000 square foot building that distributes an average of 8 million pounds of food per year. Throughout her career, Peggy has been a persistent and passionate voice in the fight against hunger in Montana. And although she will no longer be here day in and day out, her support for hungry children and families in our community will never waiver. And neither will ours. We are committed as ever to a hunger-free Montana. Peggy’s knowledge, experience and expertise will be hard to replace. It will take time to find just the right person to fill her shoes, and we have begun our search. In the meantime, you can trust that we are committed to maintaining the same level of service as always. We are dedicated to pursuing our vision of a Montana free from the ravages of hunger. A place where everyone has equal access to nutritious food. Thank you for your part in helping make that happen. You are special to all of us at the Montana Food Bank Network and we are so happy to partner with you. If you have questions, please call us at any time. SNAP and ‘Get Help’ Brochures Coming to You! Partner Agencies who serve clients that may be eligible for programs such as SNAP will receive Get Help and SNAP brochures in mid-May. These brochures include county-specific information, income guidelines, as well as general information about nutrition assistance programs. The work you do providing food boxes and meals to food insecure and hungry Montanans is extremely valuable. The public assistance programs highlighted in these brochures are also valuable as they help provide sustainable solutions to hunger. Help relay information about assistance programs to your clients by distributing these brochures. It can be easy for a brochure to get lost on a table or bulletin board. Thus, we would like to encourage you to have a short conversation with your clients highlighting information in the brochure. For example, make sure they are aware of the income guidelines, where they can apply, and what programs might be available for them. Also, another great way to distribute flyers is by putting them in food boxes! Events and Reminders Spring Cleaning As the days get longer and warmer our grass and weeds begin to grow and our furry or 6-8 legged pests come out from hiding. Just a friendly reminder to keep weeds and tall grasses a foot away from your building walls. Pests and rodents just might like to make a home there and find a way into your building. Now would also be a great time to make sure you have the appropriate rodent and insect traps set-up. Happy Spring everyone!

Harvest for Hunger
$27,623 Donated for Food Purchasing The Montana Food Bank Network was pleased to be named as a beneficiary in the recent CHS Country Operations “Harvest For Hunger” Campaign. Because it was a matching program, funds from the Montana Grain Growers Association and First Security Bank were leveraged to greatly enhance the benefit that will be passed on to Partner Agencies, through bulk food product purchase. Leonika Allen facilitated the event locally and was very excited to present a check for $27,623.73.
TEFAP and SNAP Policy Actions SIGN-ON LETTER SENT TO MONTANA CONGRESSMEN THANK YOU to everyone who signed-on to our letter urging Montana’s Congressmen to protect public food programs during budget negotiations. Tens of thousands of Montana families, including many of our own clients, rely on these programs to put food on the table every month. A total of 60 Montana organizations and 351 individuals added their names to our letter. An extra thank you to the following agencies for providing the opportunity for your clients to add their voices in support of public food programs: River of Hope Food Pantry, Plains-Paradise Senior Center, Harlem Senior Center, St. Labre Food Pantry, Riverfront Counseling Services at the Mental Health Center, Troy Community Baptist Church Food Pantry, Mission Valley Food Pantry, Pantry Partners, and the Missoula Food Bank. While we truly appreciate the effort and impact of those of you who signed-on, as a network of nearly 200 agencies we have the potential for so much more. More than 1 in 8 Montanans relies on the SNAP program and approximately 20% of the food we distribute is through the TEFAP program. If programs like SNAP and TEFAP are cut, we as emergency food providers would not be able to fill that gap. The public food programs are essential to the clients we serve and to our mission of ending hunger in Montana. The effort to protect public food programs is an ongoing challenge. We hope that next time we can truly demonstrate the support for these programs by sending our Congressmen the signatures of even more agencies and clients.
FARM BILL AND FEDERAL BUDGET UPDATE: On April 26th, the Senate Agriculture Committee approved a five-year, half-trillion-dollar plan to overhaul the nation’s food and farm policies. The measure goes now to the full Senate. It seeks to end some abuses in the federal food stamp program and cuts some $4 billion from food stamp spending, which makes up about 80 percent of the farm bill. In all, the bill reduces some $23 billion from the deficit. The current farm bill expires at the end of September, but it’s unclear whether Congress can pass a bill by then. The House is calling for far greater cuts, particularly in food stamps. Our efforts are having an impact. Congressional staff have told Feeding America they are hearing from constituents in the states about the importance of protecting SNAP and increasing resources for TEFAP.
