on page Message Fromanswers the Publisher Dear Friends and Readers, Happy Birthday To The Monmouth Family Times! This month marks the second year anniversary of the paper and I am so proud of the resource it has become. TMFT is proud to be filled with colorful activities that makes learning fun for children. I believe that TMFT reaches the need and demand for a

newspaper that provides a new approach to learning. TMFT is supported by the local businesses and professionals who believe in giving children an alternate way to reach a higher learning and thrive in their studies both in and out of the classroom. TMFT reminds children that learning is a never ending curriculum and we can and should use our minds all the time. TMFT definitely has a strong presence here in Monmouth County and now with the fourth month of The Ocean Family Times we are gaining a great presence in Ocean County as well. February is a great month. the weather

is chilly and the snow outside forces us to stay home and enjoy our family. This month we celebrate Valentines Day. Valentine’s Day is the day to show and tell your family and friends you love them and care about them. Let’s all pledge to make this Valentine’s day extra special for our family. What is the true meaning of love and family to you? Listen carefully to your child and have a discussion with your kids about what it means to you and them. Keep warm and have a Happy Valentine’s Day. Your friend, Cami

ART FOR YOUR FAMILY ʻHelping Handsʼ Art Enrichment & Musical Theatre for Children with Special Needs The staff at Artisan Studio is pleased to announce the creation of classes designed specifically for children with Autism, Asperger Syndrome, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Down Syndrome and other developmental disorders. The goal of the art and music collaboration is to provide each child with a sense of accomplishment and increasing ability to express themselves. The teachers will use these mediums to help a child channel them for communication, relaxation and enjoyment as they create unique artworks or participate in a performance. The art enrichment class benefits will be further development of fine and gross motor skills, staying on task, follow-

ing instructions, working cooperatively with others (staff and peers), and a sense of belonging. For the past few years many of Artisan Studio students have been peferred there by O.T.s and P.T.s who regard their classes as a therapeutic activity. The musical ensemble class will encourage the performer to learn all aspects of musical theatre: acting techniques, improvisation, scene work, monologue and singing in a group ensemble. The class will introduce rhythm skills as well as acting and movement to a Broadway song. The art classes will include the following: Drawing, Painting, Clay Modeling, Paper Crafting, Games, Music, Sensory Exploration, and others such as Murals, Origami, Puzzles, and Portraiture. Their artworks, both individual and collective (murals) will be displayed in our Annual Art Show to benefit Autism which is scheduled for

May. The musical theater classes will include the following: Rhythmic Repetition, Projection of Voice, Reading Scripts, Acting, Improvisation, Usage and Creation of Props. Their 16 week session will end with a performance of an adaptation of a famous childrenʼs story, to be scheduled late May early June. Most classes will be limited to six children and will be facilitated by a Special Education Teacher, Art or Music Teacher and Parent. Class size will vary by functional level of students. Parental involvement is encouraged and also mandatory on a rotational basis. The length of each weekly class will be 1 to 11/2 hours as deemed most beneficial and appropriate by the teachers and parents. The goal is to develop a sense of security for the children by establishing enjoyable routines to get each class off to a great start, par-

ticipate in both new and familiar activities, and end on a pleasant note. Artisan Studio is a facility that provides art instruction to children and adults of all ages. They offer seasonal camps, birthday parties and art classes. They work in almost all materials and mediums. For the past six years Artisan has maintained a reputation for providing a very inspiring and nurturing environment. “As artists, our staff understand the power of visual and performance arts. It is well known that special needs children are often gifted in, and usually enjoy creating artworks and musical activities. We believe our passion and experience in the arts will be of great value to these very special children. They will receive support under the guidance of experienced teachers who will help them in reaching their goals” stated owner Marlene Bohnyak.

SKIN CARE FOR YOUR FAMILY

What Is Chinese New Year? Chinese New Year is the most important of the Chinese holidays. It is a 15-day holiday, beginning on the first day of a new moon and ending with the full moon on the day of the Lantern Festival. The Chinese calendar is based on the lunar year, so the date of Chinese New Year changes every year. The Chinese calendar follows a 12-year pattern with each year named after an animal. There are various stories which explain this. The simplest is that Buddha (or the Jade Emperor) invited all of the animals to join him for a New Year celebration, but only 12 animals turned up. To reward the animals that did come, Buddha named a year after each of them in the order that they arrived, starting with the Rat, followed by the Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat (or Sheep), Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. Depending on the year you are born, you are believed to have the various character traits of that year’s animal.

2011 is Year of the Rabbit!

What traits do you have that are most similar to what animal?

HEALTHY EATING FOR YOUR FAMILY HEALTHY LIVING FOR YOUR FAMILY

Benefits of Organic Foods • Better health: Since organic food is not prepared using chemical fertilizers and pesticides, it does not contain any traces of these strong chemicals and might not affect the human body. • Better taste: People strongly believe that organic food tastes better than non organic food. The prominent reason for this belief is that it is produced using organic means of production. Further, organic food is often sold locally resulting in availability of fresh produce in the market. • Environment safety: As harmful chemicals are not used in organic farming, there is minimal soil, air and water pollution; thus ensuring a safe world for future generations to live in. • Animal welfare: Animal welfare is an important aspect of producing organic milk, organic meat, organic poultry, and organic fish. People feel happy that the animals are not confined to a miserable caged life while eating organic animal products.

1. Preheat the oven to 500 degrees F (260 degrees C). 2. In the container of a blender or food processor, combine the eggs, milk, flour, granulated sugar and vanilla. Pediatric Survey Reveals Many Parents Neglect Their Children’s Feet Only 25 percent of parents have taken their children to a podiatrist for foot ailments

Howell, NJ. Warts, ingrown toenails and foot pain bring thousands of adults to doctors’ offices every day. But according to new survey results, released by the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) during Foot Health Awareness Month, many

health-conscious parents don’t have high standards of foot health when it comes to their children’s feet. In fact, only 25 percent of parents have taken their children to a podiatrist for treatment of foot ailments. The survey, taken from a group of 620 parents with children under the age of 18, found that 35 percent of those surveyed would not be motivated to take their child to a medical professional if their child complained of foot or leg pain. Furthermore, only 49 percent of parents surveyed would take their child to a podiatrist’s office for ingrown toenails – which, if left untreated, can lead to significant pain and a loss in normal activity. “This new information proves that many parents still aren’t aware of two important things – prompt examination of a child’s foot ail-

ments, and having the examination performed by a podiatrist,” said Dr. Alison DeWaters of Affiliated Foot & Ankle Center, LLP located in Howell, NJ. “Remember – foot pain is not normal. It is very important that parents understand the vital role a podiatrist has in diagnosing and treating all kinds of pediatric foot conditions.” When parents do choose to bring their child to a professional to resolve foot problems, nearly 48 percent of parents said their child was treated by a professional other than a foot specialist – a podiatrist. A podiatrist frequently diagnoses and treats all types of pediatric foot conditions, including broken bones, cuts and abrasions, intoeing, flat feet and skin conditions such as athlete’s foot and warts, among others. One of the reasons that parents

may not be attentive enough to their children’s foot care is a lack of understanding of many key foot ailments. Just two out of every 10 moms and dads surveyed said they have dealt with sports injuries affecting their children’s feet. Even fewer (10 percent) said they have had to attend to potentially painful warts. If your child or someone you love if suffering from foot and ankle pain, feel free to contact Affiliated Foot & Ankle Center, LLP in Howell at (732) 905-1110 or at their Edison and Monroe offices at (732) 662-3050. They are located at 4645 Route 9 North in Howell, 2163 Oak Tree Road, Suite 108 in Edison and 300 Overlook Drive in Monroe. For more information, please visit www. footdoctorsnj.com.

Nutrition experts say much of what our bodies need to fight off infection can be found in foods. Do your children seem to catch more than their fair share of illnesses? Here are some ways you can boost their immune system and keep them in school. Echinacea - this natural herb will enhance your own immune system. Many research studies have proven its effectiveness. Vitamin C - this simple vitamin can fight off invading germs. Younger kids up to age 6 will benefit from around 250 mg per day. Older kids and adults can take 500 mg per day. KARATE FOR YOUR FAMILY

"Defeating Bullies and Role Playing with your Children "Why do people Bully? You may have first encountered a Bully when you went to school as a young child or you may have encountered a bully in the workplace. Unfortunately bullies are a part of life for both males and females, young and old but why do they do it? The answer is simple, they have little or no Self-Esteem. Most bullies are bullied at home unfortunately either directly by their family members or they are a direct witness of their family members bullying each other. They are often unhappy individuals that seek out an opportunity to give themselves the short term satisfaction and attention that bullying provides them. Think about it, when someone becomes a bully they tend to pick on people that appear weaker or smaller then them. This gives them a sense of empowerment but it only lasts short term. They may also receive some attention from their peers and teachers, even though it may be negative, the attention is still what they crave. So when you look at it like this, you actually want to feel a little sad for these people that they have not received the proper love and attention at home to prevent such behavior. How do you Stop Bullying before it Starts? The first key to stopping bullying at home with your own children is to make sure that you are honest enough with yourself that your child, and any child for that matter does have the ability to become a bully. If parents or teachers are bringing your child's behavior to your attention then you must be willing to accept this fact and know that it's OK. Nobody is perfect and as parents it is

our job to educate our children when life presents these challenges to us all. This is our opportunity to truly educate them and allow them an opportunity to acknowledge that their behavior is wrong, why it's wrong and then examples of how they may handle specific situations better. One of the best ways to do this is with role playing. Put them in a pretend situation, let them know what emotions they might be feeling and that it's OK to have these emotions. However you then want to make sure that they learn the proper way to respond to the emotions they may be feeling, to get control over them, breathe and make a more mature choice. Also, I would advise that you try to avoid being condescending to or around your child to other members of the family. Everyone will learn through observation so one of the best ways to teach your children proper behavior is to lead by example. If you do make the mistake of snapping at them or another member of the family take that as an opportunity to teach them a good lesson. Be willing to sit down with them, have an honest conversation and let them know that you too make mistakes from time to time, we all do but it's important that we all learn and grow from our mistakes. Tell them that saying "I'm Sorry" is not always their "get out of jail free card" and the true way to show you are sorry is by changing your behavior. Teaching your children to stand up to bullies properly I know the school systems are very strict on their "No Tolerance" policies when it comes to bullying. That means everyone gets in trouble, even if you were the one being bullied and you choose to

defend yourself. There are solutions prior to this last choice, physical response. However, I as many parents agree, that when our children are physically attacked we do not expect them to just sit there and get beat up. With that said, students need to be very careful with a physical response if they have not received the proper training for a certified martial arts school or self-defense academy that deals with defense from both the feet and the ground. I know the above is a controversial topic and one that many parents tell their children however there are options prior to this to avoid the need for physical contact. If your child witnesses someone being bullied, how can they help intervene without starting a fight. Well, work in number and battle the bully with a show of support instead of violence. What does that mean? Well let's say that a boy or girl is being bullied in school and your child sees this. My recommendation of course would be to first find and adult or teacher however they need to role play the situation as if there are no adults around. So, tell them to gather up a few friends and all go over to the person being bullied and put your arm around them in a show of support. Tell them that they can come hang out or sit with you at the lunch table and that you think that they are accepted by you. A standing of support will help to defeat the bully because they will quickly see that the student being bullied has many friends that are willing to accept this person as their friend. This will take the sense of empowerment and attention away from the bully and most likely prevent them for a future occurrence. How about the lonely kid at the lunch table? Have you taught your children that they must be a leader and not a follower? I bet you have but

have you given them specific situations to role play? They need to practice this. Tell them the next time they see someone sitting by themselves at the lunch table that they should go over and sit next to them. Imagine that was you by yourself, wouldn't you feel lonely and unaccepted? If we all teach our children to do this then it would be more common place and accepted by their peers. You must role play with your children to truly be successful. Make sure that you go through any and all scenarios that you can think of. If you were bullied in your life, then share your experiences with them so that they know they are not alone. Role play situations on the bus, in the hallway, in the cafeteria, at the bus stop and wherever they may run into this situation. If they have the actual practice, with your coaching, then when they are faced with these possible situations they will be a lot more comfortable to do the right thing. The bottom line is that this education starts at home and it is our job as parents to properly educate our children whether they are the bully or the one being bullied. If you are not sure or comfortable how, I suggest that you speak with someone like myself that deals with situations like this on a daily basis. Maybe one day the school system will allow specialists such as Martial Arts instructors to conduct free talks throughout the school system and in the classrooms to properly educate our youth on how to properly handle bullying. *Master Alders is the Head Instructor of The Karate Dojo in Jackson, NJ.
