welcome Message from the Minister for Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship It gives me great pleasure to send my warm regards to everyone attending this year’s Swiss and Italian Festa, and to congratulate the organisers on the 20th Anniversary of this highly anticipated celebration of Swiss and Italian culture. Since its inaugural celebration in 1993, the Swiss and Italian Festa has drawn the support and participation, not only of the local community, but of Victorians from all walks of life. This six-day festival brings together numerous performers, artists and community members to participate in a vibrant celebration of Hepburn Shire’s rich migrant history. It is a wonderful tribute to the settlers from Ticino in Switzerland and Northern Italy who played such a vital role in shaping this region. The Victorian Government encourages our many diverse communities to maintain, develop and share their cultural heritage. Through events and festivals like this we highlight Victoria’s reputation as one of Australia’s most multicultural states. On behalf of the Victorian Government, I congratulate the organisers of the Swiss and Italian Festa for giving all Victorians the opportunity to share in the richness of Hepburn Shire’s heritage. I wish everyone attending a most enjoyable time.

event information+contents Message from the President I am delighted to introduce the twentieth Hepburn Springs Swiss+Italian Festa. It is a celebration of the region’s early history and culture and is one of the longest running festivals in Central Victoria. Successive committees since 1993 have produced remarkable programmes of heritage, history, culture, sport, food, wine, art and music that encourage locals and visitors, young and old, to come together to remember some of the earliest pioneers in our region. The Festa has grown in strength over its 20 years and today enjoys sound support from government bodies, tourism associations and local supporters and businesses. Working in the background is a small and dedicated committee of volunteers aided tremendously by the festival creative director, Monique Harvey, who for the second year has injected the levels of professionalism and enthusiasm that enable us to present such a diverse and exciting programme. This year, in response to feedback, we have shortened the festival to six days and that will help generate a greater sense of excitement for the event. The participation of the region’s school children and their teachers in the Grand Parade, the Family Festa and concert, the children’s art prize (sponsored by Dulux), the lantern making workshops and the Lantern Parade are evidence of the special place that the festival holds in the community. I hope you will all find something in the programme that ignites your interest and enthusiasm. Remember, the success of the festival depends on everyone getting out and supporting the events. It is only with your support that we can plan with confidence for the next twenty years of festivals.

Hon. Nicholas Kotsiras MP Minister for Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship

The theme for the Festa this year is ‘Celebrating 20 Years’ so children are asked to draw Pinocchio at his birthday party. Drawings are to be on A4 paper depicting ‘Pinocchio at his birthday’, no tracing – must be student’s own work and can be any medium. Name, age and class to be noted on the back of the drawing. There will be a prize for each grade level, and for the Most Colourful, Most Original and Overall Best. Artwork will be judged by 2012 Swiss+Italian Festa poster artist Christine Polowyj.

Hepburn Primary School and the Swiss+Italian Festa present the Children’s Portrait Exhibition, inspired by the 2012 Festa Harlequin poster image. The quality of paintings last year was outstanding and we very much look forward to viewing children’s work again this year.

A display of exotic designed and crafted garden art, and sculptural furniture inspired by the architecture and culture of the Mediterranean. Stefan has been creating unique decorative wares for the home interior, garden and business since 1979. Using recycled timber and metal sourced from far and wide, he achieves an historical patina suggesting past centuries. See the displays in his gallery and courtyard. Special pieces may be made to order.

In 1990 she opened the Harvest Café, the first café/restaurant in Daylesford to support local produce, music and arts and thus helping to establish the area now known as one of the best foodie locations of Victoria. Born in Florence, Sergio has studied and performed throughout the Mediterranean: he mastered flamenco guitar in Spain, studied in Sienna and performed with Italy’s guitar greats along the Adriatic Coast. NOVEMBER 4 Open Garden: Villa Parma

NOVEMBRe 4 GARDENS

The Villa Parma garden, based on the Italian gardens of the 17 th, 18th and 19th centuries is a series of interconnected ‘rooms’ offering different areas to seek solitude and clear one’s mind, whilst wandering through controlled spaces dominated by shades of green. When the original owner and founder of Villa Parma, Mr Fabrizzio Crippa constructed his imposing home in 1864, he also established an equally striking garden. Crippa masterfully interspersed the 20 acres of grapevines with fruit, vegetable and tobacco and a vine walk. Although the vines are no longer present, today the aromatic bay trees, lilacs, rose and herb gardens, topiaries, fig and olive trees continue to flourish, providing an enchanting reminder of its bygone glory. GARDENS

Three years ago when Val and Roger Roberts moved to their new property ‘Landsdowne’, it was a mostly run-down bush block. The plantings are a mixture of natives and Mediterranean species, along with lots of grasses and iris, also a variety of succulents. They have also saved many of the indigenous plants and shrubs. Quirky sculptures, some made from old farm machinery, and many large rocks to form edges and natural sculpture have been introduced, along with meandering gravel paths that lead you around the property. Roger is an artist, and works from a large studio/gallery adjacent to the main house. His studio will be open on the day. When

Folklore, Folktales and Friends of the Festa

Daylesford based storyteller and past president of the Swiss+Italian Festa (19952001), Anne E Stewart, will wind her way through twenty years of of Swiss+Italian Festa history. From friends and early committee members you’ll hear anecdotes and conversations as they share their recollections of the beginning of the Festa and some of its highlights. Anne will tell of her involvement, including a visit by internationally renowned author/illustrator Tomie DePaola as well as recount some of Tomie’s classic folktales. Awarding winning Castlemaine based storyteller Oisin McKenna will also feature on the day and will perform Italo Calvino’s Marcovaldo tales. The stories take place in a very poor industrial city in northern Italy in the early 1950s, the Italy of neo-realistic movies. “Calvino is surely among the handful of living writers that can be called, without hesitation, great…in the spinning of his simple, magical stories we are captured, delighted, informed, horrified, reprimanded and rewarded; we are afraid and we are given hope. Calvino’s only subject is the world and how we may live in it...” San Francisco Chronicle

Proudly sponsored by Open Garden: 88 West Street, Daylesford Annie & Peter Duncan Open Garden: Stafford Garden

Leading horticulturist Lisa Stafford designed this garden with the brief to create a low maintenance and water wise environment, with year round colour. The basis of the design is a silver birch grove, under planted with bulbs and perennials for a succession of colour displays. Over 130 roses are included in a scheme that includes mass plantings of hellebores, sedum and veronica, plus many rare and unusual trees and shrubs. The front garden with its formal design provides an elegant approach to the entrance and side gardens.

The house was built around 1890 by a Swiss-Italian migrant John Lavezzolo and was acquired by Annie and Peter Duncan in 2010. In the intervening period it was among others owned by a Mr G.W. Parker, who was at one time mayor of Daylesford and a founder of the Hepburn Springs Golf Club.

GARDENS

The garden has been worked on since 2011 and is still quite new. The centrepiece is a fountain made in Castlemaine and the surrounding plantings are mostly of European origin. Other features of note are the vegetable gardens, the tumble down barn and the old oak and ash trees which probably also date from the late nineteenth century. When

Join in the celebrations after the Festa Fireworks Finale as we thank the local community for their support of the 2012 Festa. Enjoy an informal drink, some food and entertainment from Ricketty Bridge as we bring the Festa to an end. The Old Hepburn Hotel has been a focal point of the Hepburn Springs community since the Gold Rush days of the 1850’s. The hotel has had only three owners in the last 65 years. The Bakers, the Johns and now, the Dooleys. This is a Great Good Place where you can meet the locals, swap stories, enjoy a good meal and soak up the relaxed atmosphere of a “real country pub”.

A highlight for many, the coloured lanterns and lampions signal the end of another Festa and a thank you to the local residents and community for their generous support. Young and old alike join the Festa Jester’s twilight parade winding through the bush to the site of the spectacular fireworks display in the Hepburn Springs Mineral Reserve. Find a picnic spot and enjoy a fire-show and world music by Ricketty Bridge, along with hot chocolate and coffee plus delicious take away food from the Hepburn Pavilion café as we wait for the fireworks to ignite!
