Fruit Tile In this drawing exercise, students were instructed to purchase a fruit which would be rendered in colored pencils to its most likeness using shadows and a background color. After creating the drawing, students were then asked to create an abstract adaptation of the fruit in which a geometric tile could be formed in its singular state as well as a set.

Progress Drawings and Sketches

Intial Fruit Drawing, Singular Tile, Tile Set

Hand drawn sketches done while studying the starfruit in its original state as well as in the singular and multiple floor tile configuration.

Hand drawn renderings for final presentation done on bond paper with Prismacolor. From left to right: realistic rendering of the starfruit, single tile abstract representation of the starfruit, group tile of abstract representation of the starfruit.

Urban Design Studio: Marigny Neighborhood New Orleans, LA

Following the tragic destruction of Hurricane Katrina, students in the Urban Design Studio traveled to New Orleans to study the city’s culture and discover ways to rebuild a neighborhood that had been destroyed. The Marigny District was surveyed and drawn by students in groups of three then each group was asked to render a new neighborhood layout including transit and urban residential and instutional building types. I was responsible for the technical drawings depicting the main building types in the neighborhood as well as the Sketch Up 3-D layout of the neighborhood as shown below.

Ten Thousand Islands: Visitor Center Everglades National Park, Florida

Students were to design a visitor center for the geographic area known as the “Ten Thousand Islands”, which are an ancient system of islands made up in part by clumps of mangroves that have grown up on oyster bars in the shallow water, possibly assisted in some instances by storm action over hundreds of years. It is to be placed along an exsisting large parcel of ‘reclaimed’ land near town of Everglades City. The visitor center should be understood on the one hand as a gateway to the mangrove estuary of the “Ten Thousand Islands” which could be reached from here by boat, and also as a building which chronicles the history of this site and its hammock ladscape. The context of the project is the cultural and historical concept of the Calusa Indians who appeared very prominently throughout the everglades and the continuance of the Ten Thousand Island concept in which the project is set.

Progress Drawings and Sketches Hand drawn sketches done while brainstorming the colony concept and collection of buildings.
