MARZONA ARCHIVE-BERLIN

The Marzona Archive is designed to accommodate one of the largest collections in the world of contemporary art. It is located in the heart of the museum park of the Kulturforum in Berlin, one of the most difficult points of the city, lying to the south of the Tiergarten and to the west of noisy Potsdamer Platz . The new arrangement provides that the green lung of the Tiergarten will be extended to the area of Kulturforum, deleting the internal roads and stimulating the flow of the population that will make this area a public space more sustainable and on a human-scale. The green of the park is one of the foundational concepts of the project: in the building lot is explicate with the archetype of labyrinth. This parallelism has been clarified during the meeting with the collector, observing the way in which he collects and stores its collection operations that have inspired the idea of the organization labyrinthine architecture. The labyrinth is located outside, in the public area and linked to the concept of the park, and inside the building, in the layout of the paths. Also the Neoplasticism is considered one of the founding principles of the project, being avant-garde art already exists an integral part of the Marzona’s collection. The concept is linked to the image of the labyrinth and the orthogonal lines of this art are born paths of the archive. The architecture ,relating in the important neighboring building, waiver of a landmark in the town , appreciable in favor of a reduced height and square shape, which is set in the private Kulturgarten as a small pavilion with an area significantly lower that of the Neue Nationalgalerie by Mies van der Rohe.

Crossing the historic district of Cagliari, “Castello”, you can perceive a series of doors and gates closed. The impression is of being in a introverted neighborhood characterized by tight space and the light that passes over the high roofs of the gothic houses. Curiosity leads us to wonder how many mysteries , how many treasures of historical, artistic and cultural gardens and terraces or how many there are hidden from the gates of the “Castello”. The analysis of the project is carried out according to three levels of scale. During the first phase we analyzed the urban scale. Recognized the major axes, Via dei Genovesi and Via S. Croce, and then was sized up the inner link of the district. Appear directly relevant to the two street axes on the Via Corte D’Appello and Via Stretta. Behind Via Stretta the district is subject to the dominance of the private sphere and a general state of neglect and disinterest on the part of the element public. The goal is to re-open and the reactivation of a fluid system of paths and flows . The second phase of analysis concerns the block that runs along Via S. Croce. This raise-up the need to redevelop the square in front of the church of S. Maria del Monte characterizing it as an input, the host element in the area. The last level of analysis takes into account the three buildings of the Faculty of Architecture. The main faculty requirements relating to the creation of a main entrance, an element of welcome signs that the presence of the faculty within the block. The project includes: 1 reopening of access from Via Santa Croce in Via Stretta. 2 The establishment of a square that introduces the complex. 3 A building that host the ground floor of the atrium of the faculty Via Santa Croce , a reading room on the lower level and at the level of the square a coffee and a library. 4 A cafe on the inner courtyard of the mauritian palace, which can also serve for meetings and group work.

The project starts from an analysis at different scales of work, refers to the connections that are created between: the intervention, the surrounding area, the users who will use it and the different elements that constitute it. The first element, that is immanent to the project, is the environmental context. This is an artificial place which offers several interesting views that make visual relationship with nature: the views towards the sea, the hill, the lagoon and the city are not concerned by any obstacle. The concept of the views, from this building lot towards the environmental system, proved to be the starting point for the delineation of the project. Drawing on paper the cones visual from the centers chosen, it has come to create the complex and irrational mesh made of overlapping and interweaving. Working for rationalization has extrapolated a undermesh made of irregular triangles. This has modulated the lay of the land, not only planimetrically but also altimetrically, because each triangle on the mesh corresponds to a different share of land. The different profile arise from Origami game. From the land mesh has built another regular mesh of triangles that make up the modules of industrial buildings. It is ten triangular modules of different sizes whose covers follow the irregular share of soil. The architecture produced wants to rewrite the ground, it creates a landscape that calls into question the naturalness of nature, but also the artificiality of the project, increasing the value of hybrid landscape. The project is developed following the concept of sustainability with the use of renewable resources.

The site chosen is located in the district of San Michele and overlooks Viale Monastir, the main axis of the entire intervention aimed at upgrading the same street. The theme of re-use is central to the design. The area is currently occupied by a deposit of ARST heavy vehicles and comprises two industrial sheds. Precisely for this reason it is thought that the element that fits better into context is the precast, extrapolated from the neighborhood and repurposed as housing element. The prefabricated elements are well suited to a standardization of measures and forms: on the one hand you have a smaller design flexibility, on the other hand you get a significant reduction in cost and time for realization. These, assembled on the basis of geometrical studies carried out previously and applied to the entire surface of the lot, generating buildings by extrusion. The residential area developed on the upper floors is joined a public area on the ground floor which offers commercial services and a park, with the aim of creating a new center of attraction that re-qualifies the district.
