At Monash Business School, we offer you a chance to get a taste of different areas of business through our comprehensive courses. But if you know exactly what area of business you want to study, a specialist course is the way to go! SHOULD YOU PURSUE A BUSINESS OR COMMERCE PATH?

A good way to consider a business or commerce path is to lean into your strengths rather than choosing based only on your ATAR.

As a general rule, our comprehensive business courses ( Bachelor of Business and Bachelor of Business Administration) focus on strategy and knowledge-based decision-making and how this is applied in practice to the full scope of business operations. These courses also dive deeper into operations that involve people interaction such as management and leadership, human resources and marketing.

In contrast, our comprehensive commerce course ( Bachelor of Commerce) is more analytical and conceptual, with a bigger emphasis on quantitative and mathematical topics such as business analytics, econometrics, and marketing science. Choosing our commerce course will offer you a deep understanding of commercial markets and economic trends to solve business problems.

So consider your skills and strengths, and don’t worry, you can still explore both areas through the choice of electives.

ARE YOU GOOD AT MATHEMATICAL AND ANALYTICAL PROBLEM-SOLVING?

The choice of business or commerce is also determined by your Math results. If you’re interested in the Bachelor of Commerce, you’ll need Year 12 higher maths and an ATAR of 86+. The Bachelor of Business requires Year 12 maths and an ATAR of 76+, or you can do a Bachelor of Business Administration with Year 11 maths and an ATAR of 70+. The table on page 28 provides more detail on ATAR and IB requirements.

DOUBLE YOUR DEGREE

If you’re feeling the pull to explore more than one discipline, a double degree could be the right move. Monash offer one of the largest double degree programs in the country – giving you the freedom to combine your business studies with other areas of interest, including law, engineering, arts, education and IT.

Most double degree programs require just one extra year of study. By using the electives from one degree to make up the required units from the other, you’ll graduate at least two years sooner than if you studied the courses separately. It’s a great way to build your skills and expand your employability.

Information Technology Business

From small online stores to powerful multi-nationals, you’d be pushed to find a business venture at either end of the scale that doesn’t rely on IT-based systems and computer technology. A double degree in Business and Information Technology will land you right in the thick of organisational management and development. The possibilities are as open as your future.

Science Commerce

Many of humanity’s biggest scientific breakthroughs are born in laboratories. But to have any impact in society at large, these discoveries can’t stay hidden. With a double degree in Commerce and Science, you can help navigate the rocky road between scientific research and commercialisation.

Design Business

The experience of opening your new iPhone box. How you feel when you walk into your favourite store. The most successful businesses know that smart design is the key to standing out. This double degree will teach you how to see the world of business through a designer’s lens.

Business Marketing

Even the most brilliant business operation won’t get far without a solid marketing strategy behind it. You’ll gain the business skills to ensure an organisation runs effectively, and the creative and technical insights to build value and drive business success. With a double degree in Business and Marketing, you’ll be equipped to understand your market and take bright ideas to new heights – for start-ups, established businesses and not-for-profit organisations.

PICK AND MIX: DEGREES, MAJORS AND MINORS

There are a number of ways to explore a business interest area to study. It just depends on the emphasis you choose. You can do an entire Bachelor degree in one discipline and choose to undertake a second major or minor by using your elective units. A major is a main area of study made up of eight units and a minor is a second focus area made up of four units. You

also pick up electives in each area of interest.

COMPREHENSIVE COURSES

You don’t have to know exactly where you want to be in three years to kick off your studies now. With a comprehensive course, you will explore areas such as accounting, business law, marketing, management, business statistics and economics before deciding which area to major in.

Our comprehensive courses are made up of core units, a major and a number of elective units. The great thing about elective units is that you can use them to study abroad, go on a study tour, complete an industry placement project, or even take up a second major from within the Business School or from another Monash faculty.

In your second year an Integrating unit will give you the practical skills, abilities and growth mindset needed to succeed in today’s complex business landscape. Your final year will include a Capstone unit to help you demonstrate what you’ve learned in a practical context or setting.

You’re looking for a course with a practical focus and want choice and flexibility. It’s a comprehensive degree that gives you plenty of options – with 12 majors and 10 double degree alternatives. If you’re looking for broad-based skills or you haven’t yet decided how you want to specialise, a Bachelor of Business could be right for you.

If you have an interest in sustainability, you will find learnings about responsible business leadership especially valuable.

Where it could lead

A degree in business will provide you with essential skills to transition successfully into the workplace. Your degree opens the door to an enormous number of career options. You may work in areas such as accounting, economics, marketing, taxation and human resource management. The Bachelor of Business also puts you in a good position for further academic study.

I’m majoring in accounting and business analytics and statistics. I wanted to do a degree that would be useful for a long time and would help me wherever I went. Bachelor of ACTUARIAL SCIENCE

If you’re big on numbers and the role they play in our day-to-day lives, actuarial science can help you turn your curiosity into a promising commercial career.

Learn to evaluate risk and opportunity in a business setting, and use your findings to influence some of society’s most important economic structures. Actuaries play major roles in a range of organisations, and are often considered the backbone of financial security.

Why study a Bachelor of Actuarial Science at Monash?

This degree was designed by actuaries. Our Department of Econometrics and Business Statistics is the only dedicated department of its kind in Australia. It boasts the largest concentration of econometricians and statisticians in the region.

What will I learn?

In this degree you’ll learn to apply mathematical concepts to real-life scenarios, and use your analytical skills to help companies plan for the future. As you further develop your maths and analytical skills, you’ll start to use a range of concepts and data findings to solve real commercial problems.

Your degree will be tailored to building your skills in actuarial science. This degree is accredited by the Actuaries Institute Australia, and may allow you to achieve Part I of the Actuaries Institute Australia professional qualification. This also means you are able to use your electives to study a major, study abroad or complete an industry placement.

This degree could be for you if…

You’re looking for a way to turn a love of maths into an exciting career. You’ll learn to identify, analyse and assess risk in a range of business areas –including insurance, superannuation, business and financial services, scientific and social research, and engineering.

Where it could lead

Actuaries are typically found in insurance and consulting firms, as well as international accounting and professional service organisations. The financial industry is a big employer of actuaries and they’re also in demand in other industries, such as mining, telecommunications, government and academia. Actuaries often provide advice – for asset managers, stockbrokers, bankers and companies working in

risk management. The types of projects you might find yourself working on range from the mathematics of customer loyalty schemes to carbon footprint modelling. Actuaries play particularly important roles in industries that forecast real-life scenarios, using mathematical and econometric models to make predictions. For example, it is important to evaluate the impact of potential economic or policy changes on insurance premiums, superannuation and other types of financial investments.

Graduates are expected to work as analysts for the first few years of their careers, and there’s a wide range of areas to consider, including life insurance, general insurance, health insurance, superannuation, reinsurance, banking, risk management, investment and fund management, and data analytics. As you gain more experience and continue to pass the actuarial professional exams, you may be promoted to more senior roles.
