CELEBRATING EXCELLENCE AWARDS 2021

NOTE FROM THE DEAN

As we reflect on 2020, it really was a year like no other during which we faced unprecedented challenges. But, out of adversity there was triumph and it is this success that we recognise through our Celebrating Excellence Awards. For a school as big as Monash Business School, I have been truly amazed at how agile we have been in this time of crisis. Our academic and professional staff banded together to re-define our entire curriculum to make sure every student felt supported, engaged and able to succeed in their learning. Our students also rose to the challenge of remote learning and through these awards we recognise the many students and staff who achieved outstanding performance during the 2020 academic year.

Professor Simon Wilkie

Our researchers also achieved great success providing much needed information through webinars, academic papers and news articles as the COVD-19 crisis unfolded. Delivering quality thought leadership and maintaining our position as a trusted source of knowledge is more important than ever in a world plagued by mis-information. As the world undergoes constant change, it is our job to ensure our students have the knowledge and skills to shape the future of business and have a positive impact on people and the planet. Our special Future Global Leaders Award recognises outstanding young leaders and this year we have two very deserving winners, Benjamin Michelson and Munkhzaya Batbaatar. Read more about their achievements on Page 6. In 2020, we have also introduced two new awards recognising staff who have gone over and above to promote Equity, Diversity and Social Inclusion (EDSI) across our community. I congratulate A/Professor Fiona Newton (Management) for winning the

EDSI Education Excellence Award and the team of Dr Samia Badji, Dr Sonja de New, Ms Karinna Saxby and A/Professor Dennis Petrie (Centre for Health Economics) who have been awarded the EDSI Research Excellence Award. We also take this opportunity to celebrate the achievements of our alumni and I am delighted to announce the 2021 Monash Business School Alumni Excellence Award goes to Kate Morris. Kate is the Co-Founder of Australia’s e-tail powerhouse Adore Beauty, which she started in 2000 at the age of 21 with just $12,000 and two little known cosmetic companies on board. Adore Beauty has since grown to more than 260 brands, 10,800 products and hundreds of thousands of customers. In October 2020, it was one of the hottest companies floated on the Australian Stock Exchange. As we begin 2021 with a new hope, we will continue to embrace the digital and operational disruption benefits we have seen in 2020 – to be agile, to innovate and co-create – delivering excellence in our teaching to ensure our graduates are future proofed to thrive in the dynamic employment landscape. We will continue to set the agenda in understanding the changing demands of business and how this intersects with emerging technology by harnessing our world-leading research expertise to address the big challenges of the day. None of us can predict the future, but I can say with certainty that whatever the future holds, Monash Business School staff and students will be ready and able to rise to the challenge. Once again I congratulate all of our award winners on their incredible achievements which I know will stand them in good stead for whatever comes next. Best wishes, Professor Simon Wilkie Dean, Faculty of Business and Economics Head, Monash Business School

CELEBRATING EXCELLENCE AWARDS 2021

KEYNOTE SPEAKER

We are delighted to welcome Monash graduate Phil Hayes-Brown as our keynote speaker this year. Since April 2010, Phil has been the CEO of Wallara Australia, a not-forprofit, creative and social purpose organisation with a mission to drive social change and empower people with different abilities to realise their full potential. Under Phil’s leadership, Wallara has created innovative partnerships in sport (AFL Clubs), infrastructure (Metro Tunnel), media, FMCG and education (Monash University), all aimed at creating unique experiences and outcomes, and ultimately increasing inclusion. Phil graduated from Monash with a Bachelor of Economics/Bachelor of Laws in 1989. A former commercial lawyer and sports marketer, Phil had a vision to reach out and engage the mainstream community through innovative partnerships and educational platforms that drive social change and help people with different abilities achieve their full potential.

Phil Hayes-Brown

He is inspired by his daughter Phoebe, 16, who has a moderate cognitive impairment and is nonverbal. Phil applies the skills he acquired from working for 13 years with elite sporting leagues including the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the Australia Football League (AFL) to help Wallara clients achieve their life goals. Phil’s mission with disability is to change the discussion so that we hear more about what people with disabilities can do, not what they can’t. And to partner with progressive minded organisations in ways that drive social change. Among his many achievements includes Sages Cottage, a 38 acre farm on Melbourne’s Mornington Peninsula that helps teach life skills through farm activities, as well as Wallara TV – an in-house media team that captures and shares stories about disabilities.

4

The Wallara TV team has created seven 30-minute TV specials that have been shown nationally, over 150 videos for the YouTube channel that have generated over 200,000 views, and has been engaged by third parties to produce a range of videos. Wallara TV was recognised by the Victorian State Government for rights promotion and advocacy and the team is currently producing a broadcast series on Facebook called ‘Exploring Inclusion’ where Phil interviews other community and business leaders to hear how they are driving inclusion forward. In just three years, Sages Cottage Farm has become an award-winning wedding venue, launched a café, and is building a horticulture precinct to provide high quality training in hospitality and farm management. Visits have grown to 20,000 per year and the vision is to make Sages Cottage Australia’s most inclusive farm and set a new standard for inclusive tourism. Phil has also spearheaded Wallara’s ‘Keep On Learning’ partnership with Monash University. For the past three years, Monash pre-service teachers have partnered with a Wallara client with a cognitive impairment to understand the best ways to teach numeracy and literacy. This program fills a critical gap as pre-service teachers typically have no exposure to people with special needs in their teaching course. The Wallara clients and families are thrilled to be able to participate in tertiary education and the pre-service teachers learn about diversity and how they need to collaborate with their peers and adapt the techniques learnt in the classroom to suit individual needs. This innovative program raises the capacity of tomorrow’s teachers and schools and makes tertiary education more inclusive. The numeracy and literacy success has now inspired an extension into the personal fitness stream and Phil believes anyone studying a tertiary course should be required to understand the diversity of the community through engagement like this.

CELEBRATING EXCELLENCE AWARDS 2021

2021 ALUMNI EXCELLENCE AWARD

Monash Business School engages in the highest quality research and education to have a positive impact on a changing world. Our alumni represent some of the foremost thinkers and brightest achievers across many diverse business disciplines. The Monash Business School Alumni Excellence Award celebrates graduates who are creating a positive impact on the world through outstanding professional contributions. This award particularly celebrates alumni who have achieved excellence in their profession or work life; who have demonstrated leadership and innovation in their particular field; who are a source of inspiration to students and pride to the Business School community and beyond; and who value and reflect the importance of their Monash education.

WINNER OF THE 2021 ALUMNI EXCELLENCE AWARD In 2021, we are delighted to award the Monash Business School Alumni Excellence Award to Kate Morris. A university job on the cosmetic counters led Kate to realise that most women found department stores intimidating which inspired her to create a disruptive beauty shopping experience that empowers consumers. In 2000 at the age of just 21, Adore Beauty was born in her garage in Melbourne and the rest as they say is history! Kate’s goal of ‘matchmaking’ consumers with the right beauty products led to a groundswell of interest and in 2009 Adore Beauty made the Smart50 for the first time, where it has featured many times since. The company has grown to more than 260 brands, 10,800 products and a CY20 turnover of $165 million. Adore Beauty became a listed company in October 2020 and was one of the hottest floats of the year with the stock first trading at $7.40. Kate has received many awards and accolades, including Telstra Young Businesswoman of the Year for Victoria in 2010, and the Business Innovation Award for Victoria at the Telstra Business Women’s Awards in 2014. She was inducted into the Australian Businesswomen’s Network Hall of Fame in 2015 and in 2017 was the first woman to be awarded the Industry Recognition Award for online retail in the nine-year history of the StarTrack ORIAs. As a proud Monash alumna, having completed a Bachelor of Business (Management) in 2002, Kate has been an active member of the Monash community and an inspiration to many young students and aspiring entrepreneurs. She has given her time generously as a speaker, mentor and active board member on the Monash Business School Business Advisory Board from 2015 – 2018.

2021 FUTURE GLOBAL LEADERS AWARD The Monash Business School Future Global Leaders Award recognises students who are committed to the development of sustainable businesses and practices that contribute to the economic, environmental and social development of communities, and who demonstrate the drive and ambition to become global leaders of the future. WINNERS OF THE 2021 FUTURE GLOBAL LEADERS AWARD

Benjamin Michelson

Munkhzaya Batbaatar

Bachelor of Business/Bachelor of Accounting

Master of Banking and Finance

Benjamin is already an outstanding social change maker having started a charitable organisation FoodFilled that collects unsold food from retailers and delivers it to a variety of Melbourne charities. Benjamin leads an executive committee of six people, manages 145 volunteers, and has fed nearly 9,000 people since 2018. In his first year at Monash, Benjamin demonstrated his commitment to developing sustainable business practices through his ‘Chambu’ app that allows users to store receipts and warranties. Within 6 months, the app had over 20,000 downloads and a 40,000 strong social media following. Benjamin’s innovative spirit was noticed by an investor who took him under his wing and continues to mentor him throughout the growth of Chambu. At Monash, Benjamin has also been involved in 180Degrees Consulting, the world’s largest consultancy for non-profits and social enterprises. In this role, he led a team of four consultants to grow and develop a risk, KPI and value framework to assist an organisation working in the disability sector with their national expansion. The team’s recommendations are now being implemented across the organisation. Benjamin has also mentored new university students through the Monash Mentor Program. In addition, Benjamin is an active member of the Jewish community through the organisation Ohrsom Student, that supports university-aged students in deeply connecting with their Judaism and development of the community.

Munkhzaya (Zaya) is not only an outstanding student but a great role model, taking on roles to promote economic development and social inclusion, especially for women, with a particular focus on Mongolia where she originates from. Zaya has just started a position as a financial analyst for the Ulaanbaatar Green Affordable Housing and Resilient Urban Renewal Sector Project funded by the Asian Development Bank. She is excited by the opportunity this will provide her to apply her passion and skills and make an impact through this project in her hometown that will see around 10,000 households provided with affordable green housing units using renewable energy. These communities to date have been living in districts of Ulaanbaatar city which are substandard, climate vulnerable and heavily polluted. Zaya is proud that through her education and extra-curricular activities she can now contribute to her country’s development, transforming vulnerable areas into affordable, low carbon, climate-resilient and livable ecodistricts.

STUDENT AWARDS FROM THE 2020 ACADEMIC YEAR

2020 MOLLIE HOLMAN MEDAL

The Mollie Holman Medal was established in 1998 and is named after the late pioneering physiologist, Emeritus Professor Mollie Holman AO, in honour of her significant contributions to science and education. A pioneer in her field, Professor Holman’s memory is preserved in these medals struck in her honour. They are among the highest academic honours we bestow, and mark the recipients as researchers of the highest order. Each year, a maximum of 10 medals are awarded to doctoral students, normally one from each faculty, who have fulfilled their degree requirements and presented their faculty’s best thesis of the year. The Vice-Chancellor’s commendations for thesis excellence are also awarded annually to outstanding Doctoral and Research Master’s thesis excellence. A maximum of five Commendations are awarded each year.

10

WINNER OF THE 2020 MOLLIE HOLMAN MEDAL Dr Kushneel Avneet Prakash Department of Economics

Thesis Title: Three Essays on Subjective Wellbeing Supervisors: Professor Russell Smyth (Deputy Dean Research) and Dr Ratbek Dzhumashev (Senior Lecturer, Department of Economics)

Outline: Economists are increasingly turning their attention to shining a light on what determines how satisfied people are with their lives and why some people are more satisfied with their lives than others. This dissertation is a collection of three distinct, but related, papers on subjective wellbeing (SWB) in China. The first paper, The Quintessential Chinese Dream? Homeownership and the Subjective Wellbeing of China’s Next Generation examines how homeownership influences the SWB of children. The second paper, Housing Wealth and Happiness in Urban China contributes to the discourse regarding rapid growth in inequality in housing wealth and examines how housing wealth and housing wealth inequality are associated with happiness. The third paper, Petrol Prices and Subjective Wellbeing details the effect of petrol prices on SWB using household panel data.
