Everything that happens to you in life is your teacher. The secret is to learn to sit at the feet of your life and be taught. -- Polly Berends
Principal Notes I must start by acknowledging the magnitude of the love and support our community shared with me after I traveled to spend time supporting and advocating for my mom through her surgery. Many staff have experienced already the blurring of the parentchild roles that happens when our parents need caregiving from us. I drew strength from Polly Berends’ quote this week, because life was decidedly reminding me of the value of human relationships, empathic assertiveness, responsibility and selfcontrol when striving to make difficult situations more tenable. When people are taken out of their comfort zone and required to rely on the authority of strangers in an unfamiliar environment, CARES skills become the key to building connection instead of breaking it down. Sitting at the feet of both my life and my mom last week helped me reflect on how our students and families can feel coming into school, which can be a similarly overwhelming place as the hospital: different rules than home, different expectations than home, in some cases, a different language than home. Being given the opportunity to sit with that vulnerability and remain an advocate dedicated to what was best for my charge reopened my eyes to our role as educators in our school community. Our students, families, and teammates may need that proverbial blanket to wrap them in a sense of security, a sense that things are Being Done Right. As we begin the work of clarifying and tightening safety and other protocols with families, I’m reminded (as Sam reminded us Friday) that we hold that blanket in our hands.
ASC News Repeat Request: Mary and the ASC leadership would like to know what help, support, and engagement the teachers would like to see from them. Could you brainstorm in your grade level teams ASAP and send a few thoughts my way Wed. for me to share with our parents? This will help Mary immeasurably as she sets the agenda for Thursday’s meeting.

At our staff meeting Friday we discussed safety procedures and that we would be distributing reminder guidelines to parents today regarding gate closure, visitor’s passes, etc. in response to last week’s incident. This process is highly complicated due to our cohabitation with the Church and Leads will work a bit further on protocol before communication goes out to families. In the meantime, thanks for your help in locking classroom doors when you leave for the night, closing any exterior doors that you see propped open, and sending visitors without passes to the office. Thanks also for your collective contribution at Friday’s staff meeting. I am looking into getting a contact number for our security guard to reach him more easily if he is needed in the future.
CELDT reminders: Group testing for grades 25 begins Wednesday. Materials will be available Wednesday morning to pick up from Lisa’s office. If you have any questions about the CELDT, please connect with Lisa. Information will be forthcoming about the structure of individual student testing.
Please note that September’s Fire Drill is upcoming on 9/22. A protocol packet will be placed in your box this week covering procedures for emergency drills.
Studentled conferences are also upon us. Please note the significant change from our purple school calendar, which currently reflects quarterly report cards being sent home with the first quarter report card going home 10/1. The calendar is being reprinted for the Friday folder this week to reflect a trimester schedule. The first trimester report cards will go home 11/5 (the day before our second Saturday School) and there will be two minimum days for teacher report card work, 10/28 and 10/29 with more details to follow later this week.
Writing quotes (a mix of funny and serious) that kids say on strips of paper to share with my team when we need reminders of how amazing our students are. For example, Angel Jauregui recently shared “I like funny stories becausethey make me laugh. I like books about Barack Obama, becausehe is important.” HB
