" If you look deeply into the palm of your hand, you will see your parents and all generations of your ancestors. All of them are alive in this moment. Each is present in your body. You are the continuation of each of these people.” --Thich Nhat Hanh
It is hard to believe that we have been back in school for almost a month, especially with all the Back to School messages in the media and malls for those who are just heading back now. Yet with Saturday School coming up tomorrow, we celebrate the energy, excitement and enthusiasm of the 2010 2011 school year being firmly underway. We also celebrate what is and will always be the most significant factor in our students’ lives: their families. As the quote from teacher Thich Nhat Hanh so beautifully explicates, our students’ paths … to college and beyond… are inextricably woven with the legacy, love, strengths, and shortcomings of their families. For so many of our students, we are asking and promising them that if they work hard and think they can, they will go farther in life by many standards than their families have gone before them. This puts our students in the position of balancing who they are with who they’ll become, where they’ve come from and where they’re going. Many of our students must build a bridge from the love – or tragically sometimes, the lack thereof – they experience in childhood – to the cultural shift of their futures. As we meet with families tomorrow, let’s be part of building that bridge and stepping onto it with our students and their families. Thank you for the love, respect and care you all – especially Stephanie and Team We Rock have put into making this day a special celebration.
A gentle reminder that timeliness is key to a smoothly functioning school community, and in a culture of excellence, we must hold ourselves and each other to meeting deadlines. Many classes did not submit their class Hopes and Dreams by the deadline, which was noted in the MM two weeks in a row. Only two staff have emailed me answers to the quick CELDT poll I requested in last week’s MM to be answered by today. Special thanks to each of our new teachers, who all submitted inspiring and reflective Path to College Essays by yesterday’s deadline – everyone should take a moment to check these out on the Board in the front hall!
In case you haven’t heard it through the grapevine, feel no need to sign in or out in the office anymore…
Responding to a few questions, on Free Fridays I would like staff to be accessible on campus unless pressing business calls you away. In that case, please just let me know in advance. We’ll start with appreciations like we did today, from 1:00 1:15.
The campus will be in good hands this week with Lisa as Acting Principal. She will have signing authority for me for time sensitive needs and full authority for any other issues that arise. I will have ample downtime to respond to email and phone calls on an EST appropriate timetable! Thanks in advance, Lisa – you are a true gift.
I am still eager to have 1:1’s with anyone who I’ve not had the opportunity to connect with yet… please be sure to schedule with me.
Thank you so much to everyone for my beautiful, thoughtful, supportive gift. I am constantly humbled by the love and support shown to each community member here. Bless your hearts!
ASC News I had a great meeting with ASC President Mary Prime Lawrence this week, and we are planning for the first ASC meeting on September 15. Mary and the ASC leadership would like to know what help, support, and engagement the teachers would like to see from them. Could you brainstorm in your grade level teams on Tuesday and send a few thoughts my way Wed. for me to share with our parents?
Simple pleasure of the week: The hummingbird in KC’s room last week who decided to visit for an entire afternoon to “watch them learn,” and wrote Penn a letter the next day.
