This issue of Moms in the Know has the focus of home. How many sayings and quotes are there about home? “Home is where the heart it is.” “Home is the place where, when you have to go there, They have to take you in.” “There is no place like home.” We want our homes to be where the heart it is, places of comfort and rest, but they often seem like Grand Central Station, with everyone coming and going and barely slowing down to eat. We just stop in to grab our things and hurry on to our next destination! It seems like, as with everything in life, we are striving for a balance--where our homes are both a safe harbor and an efficient control center from which we send our family members out into the world. That’s another parenting task that has its difficulties (to say the least). Moms in the Know is a resource to help you navigate these difficult parenting tasks. Our goal is to provide you with helpful and fun information to make parenting easier. We have a calendar to let you know about fun events to plan for, we have information on great businesses that help in all areas in of your life, we have some excellent tips from Moms, and some great articles! In this issue, check out our article on how to protect your home from outside pests in a safe way, and read about how to make your home a fun learning center so that your child stays intellectually engaged over the summer break. We want to have the information that you want and need, so please share your tips, ideas and concerns with Moms in the Know; you can call us at 843-573-4846 or email us at info@momsintheknow.com or write on our facebook fan page.

Bug You

Susan Ledford

According to the 2010 Pest Control Survey conducted by the National Pest Management Association (NPMA), ants are the number one pest concern, with termites, spiders, cockroaches and mosquitoes not far behind. “Pests are more than nuisances in our daily lives. They can destroy property and pose health risks to children and adults alike,” said Missy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for NPMA. “Regular professional pest control should be part of every homeowner’s maintenance plan.”

T he N P M A r ecomme n ds these tips to p r e v e n t pests f r om i n festi n g y o u r home : • Seal cracks around the outside of the home to prevent pest entry ways. • Vacuum frequently and dispose of garbage regularly. • Keep counters and floors clean and free of crumbs that attract pests. • Pay extra attention to kitchens and bathrooms — especially under appliances and sinks — as these areas are particularly vulnerable to cockroach infestations. • If you suspect an infestation, contact a licensed pest professional to identify the species and recommend a course of treatment.

Don’t Let Bugs Bug You

E ffecti v e g r ee n pest co n t r o l Effective green pest control embraces Integrated Pest Management (IPM), an approach that is more sophisticated and scientific than that of traditional exterminators. At the core of IPM is pest prevention, client education and regular inspections. By identifying and eliminating the conditions which can attract pests before they arrive, you truly are getting the most natural pest control available. This approach also requires careful selection of pest control products when their use is necessary. Whereas traditional exterminators often apply cheap, highly-toxic pesticides in abundance, use a pest control company that opts to select the best reduced toxicity or non-toxic products available on the market for effective pest elimination. A carefully selected product line may include some organic and naturalbased pest control products, and utilize a variety of cutting edge, target-specific products that are scientifically engineered to be more effective, biodegradable and, in some cases, even less toxic than their natural counterparts. In addition, examine application methods to target pest areas such as feeding and nesting areas, as well as entry points. This crack-and-crevice approach eliminates the need for broadcast application, in turn reducing the amount of product used and your exposure to it. There are even more ways to reduce your exposure to pest control products. In addition to correcting conducive conditions, mechanical or pesticide-free items such as traps and general pest-proofing materials (screens, caulking, door sweeps) can also be very effective when used in conjunction with other preventative pest control measures. Schools, day cares, hospitals, restaurants, government agencies and more are all moving toward a smarter, more responsible approach to pest control by implementing Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies and programs.

Ledford’s Termite & Pest Control is proud to be a part of this revolution in pest control and look forward to providing you with the highest level of service quality and care.

Fight Summer Learning Loss

F ight S u mme r

Learning Loss Caroline Baxter Lambert

S tim u l ate y o u r C hi l d r e n ’ s B r a i n s witho u t T hem E v e n Notici n g

Summer is here --- no more pencils, no more books, no more teacher’s dirty looks -- which also means no more structured learning, reviewing the multiplication tables, or doing book reports. As a result, according to many studies, such as one conducted recently at Johns Hopkins University, most children lose as much as 2 months of reading and math skills over the summer break. On the other hand, children who continue to learn in the summer retain more of what they learned during the previous school year. It’s a powerful argument for year round school schedules. Our goal: keep our children’s brains working and turned on during the summer without turning into a tiger mom and making it seem like school. I’ve been working on a list of ways to do this. Most of these things can be done whether you work outside the home or stay at home. The most important thing is to try to do something DAILY.

Reading Keep children reading over the summer. One way to do this is to sign up for the summer reading program at your local library. This will give you some tools for keeping up with how much reading your child is doing, and it gives incentives for the child -- small prizes for reading for a certain amount of time. Get in a routine: have your child read for a continued next page

Fight Summer Learning Loss

set amount of time before bed, or establish a quiet time for reading after a busy day of playing at the pool. Librarians can help recommend age appropriate books, or check out the reading lists on these sites: www.udel.edu/ETL/RWN/ReadingLists.html or http://childrensbooks.about.com/od/forparents/tpsummer_reading.htm • The daily newspaper is also a good place to practice reading--read about current events and then discuss them, or follow a favorite baseball team in the sports page. If your family will be taking a trip this summer, check out or buy books related to your travels. Our family learned a lot by reading Civil War history books geared for children before a trip to Gettysburg. It made the trip more meaningful. • Searching your library’s catalogue on line and reserving books that will interest your child makes it easier to have good reading material on hand. You can swing by and have the books ready to pick up, without having to wander around looking for the books you want. Teach older children how to do this themselves, so they can browse and pick out books they’d like read.

Writing Don’t let writing skills get rusty. Have your child keep a journal of what’s going on. Even short entries will help keep skills alive, and it’s fun to look back and read the entries. Encourage children to write letters to friends and relatives, or look for a pen pal at www.world-pen-pals.com, or www.penfriends.com. Another idea is to encourage your child to start a neighborhood newsletter. Suggest writing movie reviews or a sports column.

Arithmetic Keep math facts fresh. Get a set of flash cards to practice the skills your child learned most recently. Get a timer and go through a stack of cards, counting how many he answers correctly. Then set a goal for improvement with a small reward. There are many websites with math games; check out FunBrain, Algebra Games, and Around the World in 80 Seconds. You can also practice math by using real life tasks like measuring for a recipe, or rolling coins to be turned in at the bank.

Fight Summer Learning Loss

Science Embrace every day science. Track temperatures for the month and then graph them. Look up weather in cities where faraway friends or relatives live, and compare temperature, humidity, sunrise/sunset with your own hometown. My husband is introducing my daughter to chemistry by having her help him with the chemical levels in our pool. Check out science websites like Encyclopedia Smithsonian, Google Sky, Food Fury at Playnormous.com and Geology games at Kids Geo.

Pick a Project

H e r e a r e some of the ide a s I fo u n d th at so u n ded i n te r esti n g : • Pick a theme and check the newspaper for related articles. Have your child cut them out and glue them in a scrapbook. • Have your child draw a map of your neighborhood. Take a walk with him to fill in the details. • If you want to travel the world but can’t, have your child pick a country you’d both like to visit. Find it on the world map, read a book set there, and then plan a meal featuring a typical meal. • Have your child and friends or sibling make hand puppets and put on a puppet show. • Give your child your camera and let her take pictures around the house and yard. Get the photos developed and have her make a photo album and write captions. • Let your child plan a menu for a meal and pick a recipe. Have him check to see which ingredients you have on hand and make a shopping list. Let him take charge selecting and pricing things in the grocery store, and then help him cook and serve the meal.

Fight Summer Learning Loss

Summer is also a good time to: • Work on a child’s weak areas in school. • Play board games like Clue, Battleship, and Boggle. • Start a collection: stamps, coins, baseball cards, dried flowers or leaves. • Plant a garden. Even a tiny one is fun. My daughter has a strawberry plant that she enjoys tending -- and eating the produce. • Work on world map puzzles. Check out the excellent ones made by GeoPuzzle. • Encourage older children to create their own jobs, such as watering plants or caring for pets for out of town neighbors. Check out babysitting classes for aspiring babysitters at the Red Cross. Another way to keep learning is by volunteering at local charities. • Even if you are tied to a 9 to 5 job, you can plan mini-trips to the aquarium, museums, and other local fun “learning spots.” Do things that appeal to you and your children. I’m hoping we can work on real life basic skills, now that all our time isn’t taken up with homework and after school activities. Here are my lofty goals for the summer: I want to teach my ten year old son to do a load of laundry, make a grilled cheese sandwich, and work on his keyboarding (we have a computer program that is lessons with games). I want him to teach me how to play chess so we can play together -- I think that will be good to strengthen both of our weak left brain skills. I’m also thinking we should do sudoku puzzles for the same reason. I really want to him to memorize a few poems, ones that are fun to recite, maybe “Jabberwocky” by Lewis Carroll, or Robert Frost’s “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.” Nobody seems to require this in school anymore, and I love knowing a poem by heart. (It has to be good exercise for your brain to memorize a poem.) I also want to find a program to start learning Spanish, one that is suitable for my ten year, four year old and me. Bottom line: Limit TV. Encourage reading. Get outside. Seize hidden opportunities for learning.
