Schools Add Values
Jason O’Rourke Head Teacher
Schools add value to produce top-class children A ground-breaking project is helping to ignite new ways of learning and create a values-based approach to educating children in Lincolnshire.
Dr Hawkes said: “What appears to be missing sometimes is a shared ethical vocabulary, based on universal positive human values which can provide a sense of direction and vision about how to nurture a positive sense of self, support the raising of academic standards and foster a stable, moral society.”
Peace, Quality & Patience Washingborough Foundation Primary and Nursery School and Coleby Primary School have both notched up the Values Education Quality Mark. And other schools across the county are involved with the Values-based education programme – aimed at equipping pupils with core values for life. A Values-based school seeks to promote an educational philosophy based on valuing self, others and the environment through an ethical values vocabulary. The driving force behind the approach is former head teacher, chief education adviser and Local Education Authority officer, Dr Neil Hawkes.

At Washingborough Foundation Primary pupils are taught about the 22 core Values – which include honesty, peace, quality, patience and respect over a two year period. Head teacher, Jason O’Rourke said Values education crosses all cultures and all religions and the aim is to make the values principles a “first language” amongst pupils. He said: “Each value is introduced and explained about in our Monday assemblies and then we talk about our 22 core Values over a two-year period. “We think about how we can make our Values part of our everyday lives. If you get the child right, their academic success follows on.”

Schools Add Values
Dr Hawkes www.values-education.com
Parents of children at Washingborough have commented on the impact the Value-based approach is having, many commenting that there is a real positive ethos throughout the school. Bridget Knight, trustee of the Values Education Trust, has no doubt that Values-based education is a clear winner. “What sets values-based schools apart is unique and distinct: these schools have leaders who operate deeply held principles of loving, enabling and engaging.
Non-Cognitive Skills
“This deeply practical approach offers a route to a more socially inclusive, engaging, motivating and rewarding school experience, helping all of us to open our minds and be alive to our own endless possibilities.”She added: “There is a growing recognition that increasingly children will come to school from families that are in a state of huge flux, if not in actual disarray, and that the influence on children outside school can have a huge and detrimental bearing on their attitudes to learning.

“Research by the Nobel prize-winning economist, James Heckman, shows that non-cognitive skills are as important as technical skills in determining employability, earnings and career success. All this makes it more vital than ever that our schools are havens where individuals can come and truly flourish.” For further information, go to:

Like Mother, Like Daughter
Pictured are Anna Fane, with her daughters Becky left, and Rosie
Is it in the genes? Are daughters like their mum and do they inherit more than their mother’s genes or do they shape their own future?
As they get older, we look for similarities in personality, academic success and sporting interests and many daughters find themselves turning into their mum in later life. One study found that families tend to have similar facial expressions when they’re happy, angry, sad, surprised or thinking hard. As one American professor of human genetics said: “Many traits have a large hereditary component but genetics isn’t destiny – genes are just one influence on how children turn out.” And to quote one American director of education:
Whatever we think, we can’t dispute the fact that
“Most traits are actually determined by many genes

mannerisms, we will have some similarities to our biological mothers. When our children are born,

Like Mother, Like Daughter Meanwhile Allison Faulkner, co-owner of the Stepping Stones Pre-School in Nettleham, has seen her gymnastic skills develop in her daughter Georgia. At school, mum-of-two Allison, competed in school competitions at Ancaster High School and made sure daughter, Georgia, started lessons at an earlier age. “I didn’t start until I was 12 whereas Georgia was much younger and has benefitted from having coaching from an earlier age. “I loved gymnastics and Georgia does too,” said Allison who finds herself driving Georgia to Lincoln Gymnastics Club numerous times a week. “She gets so much out of it, very much a social thing as Allison Faulkner & daughter Georgia Willerton
well,” said Allison, whose son, Alex (14) follows in his father’s footsteps for his passion for cricket.
And Rosie, who has expressed an interest in working with children with autism, could even be attending the same teacher training college. “She’s applied to go to York and Oxford Brookes, but Oxford Brookes is her first choice and where I studied. It would be really great if she does go there. “We do fall out occasionally, like all mother and daughters, but on the whole we are very similar.” And it’s not just teaching where the two share similar interests – it also extends to hobbies and interests. “Rosie sings like me,” says Anna, who sings with a band on stage in her spare time and has performed at many events locally. “She has grown up with parents who are both musical and enjoy performing,” said Anna, who says the couple’s other daughter, Becky (15) is more like husband Greg, although there are aspects of both their personalities in both children.

Positive Steps Forward nail in the coffin for their parents ever getting back together. As Suzie Hayman from Parentline Plus said: “It’s a function of a stepfamily that something happened to ensure its creation – and that something is likely to be tragic. Stepfamilies are founded from a tragedy – someone has died or a relationship has died to make it happen.”
Breaking up is hard to do and when there’s children involved, it’s even harder. Around 300,000 couples with children separate every year and sadly this is a statistic that’s set to carry on rising. Stepfamilies, also known as blended families, are more of the norm in 21st century Britain with 65 per cent of remarriages including children from previous relationships and while it’s obviously a sad experience, it’s possible to make it a very positive one. Take one mum-of-two who lives in a village near Lincoln. Dawn had been married for 24 years when she decided her marriage was not working out so she decided to call it a day. “We’d just grown apart,” said Dawn, who has two children, one aged 12 and the other aged 15. “It was a difficult decision and one I thought about for a long time but you do adjust and cope well. Divorce is more common than you think these days.” And as Dawn so rightly said: “You’re better off being separate and happy than married and miserable. If you’re not happy as a couple, the children soon spot it. They pick up more than you think. “My two have adjusted so well and love their stepdad. They see their dad and get on with him really well as well. Some people stay in a relationship for the wrong reasons. If it’s not working out then it’s a decision that has to be made.” And while parents may see the creation of a stepfamily as the beginning of something joyful, the children may see it as a negative and a final

So how do parents make the blended family a positive experience? According to one guide to step-parenting, don’t make a blended family a replica of your first family as this can often cause confusion, frustration and disappointment. Instead, “embrace the differences” and be civil. If families can be civil with each other rather than being unkind, it’s much more positive as is respecting all relationships, not based on age but based on the fact you’re all family members now. Give compassion for everyone’s development – everyone might be at different life stages and have different needs and these must be addressed. Give room for growth as well – the blended family won’t come one overnight – it takes time. Suzie Hayman, author of “Stepfamilies: Surviving and Thriving in a New Family” says: “You can’t make your children like your new partner but the really important thing is to explain that this new adult is not a substitute for one of their parents – it’s someone extra. They are a step-parent, not substitute parents.”
Top Tips On Being a Step-Parent It’s not easy, but Relate counsellor Paula Hall suggests: • No overt favoritism. • Be united – children need to know parents support each other. • Be consistent. • Be patient. • Have household rules which apply to everyone. • Spend time with your kids on your own. • Don’t spoil a child – even if you feel guilty about breaking up their family.

Storybook Days Storybook Days is an idea developed in April 2010 by Sarah Hollamby and Leanne Taylor, residents of Nettleham, Lincoln. Both have over 11 years of experience in Education and Arts and have built on their idea of bringing children’s stories to life through creative and practical workshops.
‘We have rid the village of the giants with the help of the BFG’ says Leanne ‘made our own ‘purple hand gang’ with Horrid Henry, floated our boats down the Beck as we imagined what it would be like for Michael the main character of Michael Morpurgo’s popular book ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’ and we even found out ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ in Vickers Wood.
Each school holidays Storybook Days run full day workshops, based in their local village - themed on various popular children’s stories. Each day is carefully planned to include drama, storytelling music, dance, crafts and games and tailored to the age of children attending. ‘Our themed days allow the children to become immersed in the stories and to enter the fictional world through fun and play – says Sarah ‘In this day and age, when stories and make-believe can sometimes be lost to technology and television, our workshops allow space for all primary age children to once again enjoy books.’
During the last two years – Storybook Days have extended their work to include schools workshops, children’s parties, festivals and libraries. ‘We have been nominated by national organisation What’s On for Little Ones for two awards, which we are really excited about and are pleased that 2012 seems to be turning into our busiest year ever!’

Making History
www.making-history.org
Pictured are actor Colin McFarlane (www.colinmecfarlane.tv) & Nick Barratt with Lincolnshire School Children
Top actor helps children to trace their roots Schoolchildren in Lincolnshire are tracing their roots – thanks to Lincoln actor, Colin McFarlane, best known for Batman Begins and The Dark Knight and being the voice of ITV’s, The Cube. Colin, who lives in Lincoln and London, was inspired to start the Making History project by a story in a script entitled `The Land of Look Behind’ by Judy Hepburn, which he was directing two years ago. In it, a black teenager is inspired to research his history after stumbling on the story of little-known explorer Matthew Henson – the first man to reach the North Pole in 1910, who was also black.

Colin, who has appeared in numerous TV shows including Holby City, found the story so fascinating he began searching for like-minded souls who shared his vision to enable children to “have a sense of who they are”, by discovering something inspiring in their past that empowers them to follow their dreams. Pupils from Lincoln’s Monks Abbey Primary School and Hartsholme Primary School, who took part in the pilot, have given the project the thumbs up. “I have found out about where my family come from in the Philippines and have shared it with my friends. It’s really exciting,” said one youngster at Monks Abbey. Hartsholme Primary School Headteacher, Carl Jarvis, said: “An important part of the school’s ethos is empowerment. There is nothing more empowering for children than the Making History project. “They are enthused from the very start and this only increases as the addiction of finding more about their family history kicks in. They have learned to interact

www.myheritage.com with adults and children alike and have become more confident and respectful individuals as a result.” The project involves a 12 week education programme to take children through the steps of tracing their family tree. It is designed to help pupils trace their family as far back as possible using key genealogy websites, particularly that of Making History’s principal sponsor, MyHeritage.com. It also includes on-line tutorials from Dr Nick Barratt (of BBC TV’s Who Do you Think You Are), an advisor to the project. Some amazing stories have already emerged from the pilot with one pupil researching a probable family connection to Hitler’s brother, another finding a link to Dame Peggy Ashcroft; another to a Saint, and one to an American silent movie star, Laura La Plante. *For more information and to see several video trailers of the project go to www.making-history.org, e-mail colin@making-history.org or phone 01205 875134 Colin, who has appeared in numerous TV shows including Holby City, found the story so fascinating he began searching for like-minded souls who shared his vision to enable children to “have a sense of who they are”.
Now Making History, which has already undergone a six-month pilot project, is being rolled out to a further 500 – 600 pupils.
PROJECT AIMS • To challenge preconception and broaden horizons. • Increase tolerance and understanding across cultural boundaries. • Create within children a sense of who they are. • Bring curriculum subjects such as geography, history, science and language alive through personal stories. • Help children to develop skills in research, film-making and writing. • Raise children’s aspirations through mentoring.
He said: “Social cohesion begins with cross-cultural understanding and involvement. That journey begins in childhood. The greater the awareness that can be laid down in those formative years, the better the prospect of creating a truly integrated and happy society.”

The Collection Little Legends Play at The Collection A new activity centre for younger visitors at The Collection is now open. Play will inspire and delight all younger children and toddlers. With a soft play space for babies; toddlers and children can dress up as a princess, a knight or even a dragon. A step-into portrait gives parents the perfect opportunity to take photographs of their little legends, so remember to take your camera. If you have a budding artist in your family your children can create their own masterpiece, which might feature on the masterpiece wall. After all that hard work playing, relax and unwind in The Collection café, run by Stokes. Stokes, Lincoln’s premier coffee people offer top choices for children, with a menu that includes ‘dinosaur’ shaped sandwiches, ‘roman pancakes’, homemade ‘raptor claw’ chicken nuggets, Viking potato longboats and ‘Ice Age’ ice-cream. Parents can also treat themselves to freshly made crepes and Stokes’ famous selection of teas and roasted coffees.
The Collection, Danes Terrace, Lincoln LN2 1LP Open Monday – Sunday 10am-4pm (last admission 3.45pm) Entry to the museum and Usher Gallery is FREE

Those of us who know Lincoln will be familiar with the great shopping, the increasing number of places to eat and drink and the wealth of history and heritage here in the city. Visit Lincoln Partnership is working with businesses in the city to raise the profile of the city through collectively promoting our assets. Many people from outside of the area don't know what Lincoln has to offer - so Visit Lincoln Partnership want to change this. We want Lincoln to be one of England's most visited historic cities. We want people to choose Lincoln as a place to visit, live, work, some for meetings, study and invest. To do this requires partnership working and a coordinated effort. Visit Lincoln Partnership have recently introduced a new look and feel for the way Lincoln is presented in marketing. The creation of this brand is just one part of the work that the Visit Lincoln Partnership is undertaking to ensure that awareness of Lincoln increases. If we can attract more people to the city then we can help centre and support jobs and bring more money into the local economy. This year you will see a new open top tour bus in Lincoln. Offering an exciting way to see the city with a live guide on board - so for residents and visitors this will be a great way to learn more about the city. Look out for the bus that will be operating tours from Easter until October. The annual programme of events in the city just keeps getting better from craft and artists markets to some bigger events such as the Waddington Air show and the Cathedral Flower Festival. Lincoln Beam 2012 LINCOLN BIG is powering-up for another great Summer and once again the beam! Children’s Festival will have a starring role! Plans are underway to make this year’s 8-day event – which will start on June 30 - even bigger and better. Last year more than 4,000 youngsters between the ages of four and 12 years old threw themselves into entertaining shoppers by performing songs, sketches and dances in Lincoln City Centre. More than 30,000 residents and visitors took time out to enjoy these performances and, while they were in the city, the young pupils also attended live music events and workshops or a children’s theatre performance. This year, Lincoln BIG – supported by Lincolnshirebased Festival Co-ordinator cultural solutions and event sponsor Cool Milk at School – is pulling out all the stops to deliver an even higher quality event.
Co-Artistic Festival Director Leanne Taylor added: “This year, there will be even more fun because these groups will be out and about on both Saturdays of the Festival, June 30 and July 7. Add to this the planned community procession and Lincoln will have an amazing week of festivities.”
Lincoln BIG events and promotions manager Michael Armstrong said: “Children from 30 schools will be taking part and we know that excitement is already building as teachers begin to work with them on ideas for their individual activities.
David Lambert said that the beam! festival is a hugely important feature in Lincoln’s busy 2012 events diary.
“There is still time for local businesses and organisations to support the festival, so do get in touch with us for a chat,” he added. Cultural solutions director David Lambert said: “The fantastic programme of music, singing and dancing being produced by the school children, is being complemented by many other attractions. “Shoppers and city centre visitors will find themselves stopping in their tracks to marvel at amazing street theatre performers, who will be roaming the streets and surprising people with impromptu performances. “Last year, all sorts of amazing characters were spotted in the city centre from gnomes with wheelbarrows to a team of lifeguards and posties struggling to carry a giant parcel up the High Street.”

“The Festival aims to build strong, mutually beneficial partnerships that assist in getting Lincolnshire’s businesses and organisations’ messages out to a very specific target group of people,” he added. Beam! organisers are thrilled that Lincoln business Cool Milk, which is the UK’s leading school milk supplier, has come on board as key sponsor of this exciting event. Cool Milk works in partnership with local councils and early years groups to supply free and subsidised school milk to children in pre-schools, nurseries and primary schools. Highfields Holiday Offer
7 Nights for the Price 5 - See Page 49 The Lodges at Highfields provide an ideal property for people seeking a gentler way of life away from the ‘hustle and bustle’ of everyday living. Ideally situated in the heart of rural Lincolnshire. Highfields offers great access to many local towns including historic Lincoln and many beautiful traditional villages where life simply reminds you of ‘olde England’.
Exclusive timber Lodges are majestically positioned on the gently rolling hillside overlooking the lakes, woodland and countryside in our idyllic and secluded location.
The park itself offers tranquillity, serenity, exclusive fishing, stunning countryside views and an abundance of private woodland and meadow walks. It’s also a twitchers paradise with regular sightings of Buzzards, Woodpeckers, Owls and birds of prey, not forgetting our herds of wild deer that often meander and graze around the park. Come and visit us today, a visit is not only worthwhile but essential to appreciate what Highfields has to offer… Chris Ashley Director at Highfields Retreat
