M

ario Perez is a New York native who has always been into working out and taking care of his body. Not too long ago did he discover CrossFit and all that it has to offer. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the sport: CrossFit is essentially cardio, gymnastics and strength training rolled into one electric, efficient package. It is an intense workout that is far from easy yet never impossile. The workouts are adjusted to your needs allowing almost anyone to participate. CrossFit is a program where you will learn new skills, improve your nutrition habits, get stronger, feel better, look better, and improve your quality of life.

MAC: How did you hear about Cross Fit? MP: I saw a random guy at a corporate gym doing it, he suggested I google and look into it. I did my research and decided to try it out and I fell in love instantly.

MAC: Did your physical appearance change at all from your experience with Cross Fit? MP: Oh my gosh, yes it did totally. I’ve always been muscular because I was into heavy weight lifting and bodybuilding. Cross fit made me keep my muscle but I have a leaner muscle now. There are a lot of gymnastic moves in the workouts so my physique did have a transformation. Cross Fit also makes me eat healthier. I wanted to be smarter with my eating decisions after joining because of the atmosphere I was and still am in.

MAC: Was it hard to make this change? MP: Yes and no. Yes because I have to do a lot more grocery shopping and I can’t go out to eat as much. If I do, I have to look up menus online to see if there are paleo friendly meals there. No because I have always been somewhat of a healthy eater. Also because a lot of my friends are doing the paleo diet, we kind of made a challenge out of it between all of us. Haha.

MAC: What type of person should join Cross Fit?

MAC: What does your diet consist of? MP: I eat a Paleo diet. So that’s basically meat, fruit, vegetables, and a lot of water. I also have protein drinks after I work out. I’ve been doing this paleo diet for a couple of months now and I really enjoy it. Of course I cheat sometimes and have Chipotle or something. But overall I stick to a clean paleo diet.

MP: Someone who is willing to put in hard work and challenge him or her should join. We get a lot of athletes who join looking to get in even better shape, but we also get people who aren’t in shape at all. The movements and workouts are scaled to whatever level you are at making any person capable of performing the workout. I say anyone can join and they can but that person needs to be willing to put in the work. You get out what you put in.

MAC: Was it hard to make this change? MP: Yes and no. Yes because I have to do a lot more grocery shopping and I can’t go out to eat as much. MAC: What is your favorite thing about Cross Fit? MP: Oh just one favorite thing? I can’t do that, haha. Well it’s fun! It’s fun because I never get bored and it’s fun because of the community we have here at our Garden City location. The people that come in and out of this gym make my job so much easier and I love being able to coach everyone as well as get my workouts in with them. The people make it awesome.

MAC: What made you want to continue with it? MP: I needed a new training routine. Powerlifting and body building was getting to be boring and repetitive. I was ready and needed a new type of challenge. MAC: How long have you been doing it? MP: I have been doing Cross Fit for over 4 years now and I never get bored. There is something new to do everyday, it’s not just your average lifting heaving weights. MAC: Why should someone join Cross Fit? MP: Anyone who is interested in getting fitter in general should try Cross Fit. It will help improve their daily lives, period. If they do any types of sports or perform any type of physical activities, Cross Fit will make them better at it.

MAC: Do you think diet has a lot to do with fitness? MP: It is the majority of being fit. Of course you need to stay active and workout and everything to be fit. But you still have to eat healthy and have a nutritious diet. No one will see the results they want if they have a crap diet, no matter how much you workout.
