Project Brief In short, the project brief concerns the idea of creating a “home from home” for ECA students, providing a space for them to socialise and interact with their peers outside of classes, in an inclusive and comfortable environment. The design captures the spirit of ECA’s historic Revels and biophilic design principles will be used to support the health and well-being of those who inhabit the space.

Project Theme and Origins This project’s theme has arisen from the issue of the lack of adequate facilities on the Edinburgh College of Art (ECA) campus where students from the various disciplines can socialise and interact. In the past the University has focused on providing teaching and studio spaces for the separate disciplines but areas to gather as a creative community are largely non-existent.

This project tackles this problem and provides a social space for the ECA students allowing for improved interactions across the different programmes. This space will improve the student experience for the users, whilst supporting them in their studies and well-being.

Biophilic design principles will inform the design of the space, ensuring that the health and well-being properties associated with this can be utilised.

ECUDORPThe project theme has evolved into becoming a “home from home” for ECA students and will play with the idea of belonging and different perceptions on the understanding of “a home”. These perceptions will allow the separation of the space and inform the different functions. Living Rooms for each of the five schools within the college have been tailored to suit their users and have been designed using a playful stereotyping of the different departments to inform design decisions.

The historic ECA Revels have been a contextual inspiration behind the project theme so there will be various points throughout the building that encourage interactions between the different disciplines, recreating the creativity and collaboration showcased in these extravagant celebrations of old.

02 PRODUCE

Site Location and History The North East Studio Building is located on Edinburgh College of Art’s Lauriston Campus, the art school’s main campus, housing the Schools of Art, History of Art and Design. The North East studio building is located adjacently east of the ECA Main Building and north of the Hunter Building.

Lauriston Campus is located in Edinburgh’s Old Town, an area of conservation and within Edinburgh’s UNESCO World Heritage Site boundary. Lady Lawson street runs along the west of the campus and West Port along its northern face. The historic street The Vennel is located directly east of the North East Studio Building. The northern facade of the project site looks on to a view of Edinburgh Castle. A point of historical interest to note is that the campus was built on the site of Edinburgh’s old Cattle Market as can be identified in the historical maps seen to the right.

The surrounding properties are largely commercial or residential apartments housed within the traditional architectural type of the Edinburgh tenement. Contemporary builds in the surrounding area are predominantly serving as office spaces.

Building History Designed by Ralph Cowan and built in 1961, the North East Studio Building, formerly known as the Architecture Building, was designed to house Edinburgh College of Art’s Architecture and Town Planning Departments. It was a part of the redevelopment of the ECA campus which took place in the 1960s and 1970s. As well as studios and teaching space, Cowan’s design also housed common room and dining facilities for the students.

Cowan himself experienced life as a student at the Edinburgh College of Art, studying architecture. He then proceeded to teach at the college during the 1940s and 1950s before being appointed as head of the school of Architecture in October 1955. The image below shows Cowan attending one of the famous ECA Revels.

The North East Studio building holds no listing status however the ECA Main Building to its west and Hunter Building to its south hold grade A and B listed status respectively.

The building was renamed following the departure of the School of Architecture from the space when they relocated to Chamber Street in 2016.

Site Analysis The building itself is essentially a concrete block with large amounts of glazing. Since being built in 1961, few physical changes have been made to the building. Over the years its uses and functions have transitioned to house students from other schools within ECA, with it most recently becoming home to the Interior Design Department. However it has never deviated from its original function as an educational facility. The common room and dining facilities which were part of Cowan’s vision in 1961 are no longer present in the building.

Despite this, the building remains a central hub on the Lauriston Campus with it being home to the ECA Shop, Repographics Department and the historic Wee Red Bar so the space is therefore accessed by a large proportion of the ECA community on a daily basis Prior to the pandemic there were plans to demolish the North East Studio Building including the Link Building which joins the building to the ECA main building and Hunter Building. These proposals were a part of a redevelopment programme for the Lauriston Campus. It was felt that demolishing the link building would become a costly and difficult task. This triggered proposals for the remodelling of the two entities, making more efficient use of the entire footprint of the building.

These plans were halted due to the uncertainty caused by the pandemic, more recent plans, including those outlined in this design book, look at the redevelopment of these spaces rather than the dramatic step of demolition.

03 PRODUCE

The EC A Revels The historic ECA Revels were large, extravagant parties thrown by the students and staff of ECA. Dancing, singing and daredevil acts characterised these celebrations and the spirit of these wonderful events have played a major role behind the inspiration of this project. The collaborative efforts of students, from disciplines across ECA, to create such grand and lavish events, demonstrates a sense of community and suggests the importance of the art school’s identity, something that seems to have absented itself from ECA.

Biophilic Design Biophilic design has been another contextual theme behind the project with the principles of this informing the final proposal.

The 14 Patterns of Biophilic Design (as seen on the right) developed by Terrapin Bright Green have informed various aspects of the design from the introduction of interior planting to the increased sight-lines out of and within the interior space.

Oliver Heath Design Studio have been influential in the presentation of the project as this studio prides themselves on their human-centred biophilic design projects and thus their studio standard is a strong example to follow. The 14 Patterns of Biophilic Design by Terrapin Bright Green Patterns which the project demonstrates most successfully marked in green.

1. Visual Connection with Nature - a view to an element of nature, living systems and natural processes.

2. Non Visual Connection with Nature - auditory, haptic, olfactory or other stimuli that engender a deliberate and positive reference to nature, living systems and/ or natural processes.

3. Non Rhythmic Sensory Stimuli - stochastic and ephemeral connection with nature that may be analysed statistically but may not be predicted precisely.

4. Thermal and Airflow Variability - changes in air temperature, relative humidity, airflow and/or surface temperatures that mimic natural environments.

5. Presence of Water - a condition that enhances the experience of a place through seeing, hearing or touching water.

6. Dynamic and Diffuse Light - varying intensities and colour of light and shadow that change over time to create conditions similar to those that occur in nature.

7. Connection with Natural Systems - awareness of natural processes, especially seasonal and temporal changes characteristic of healthy ecosystems.

8. Biomorphic Forms and Patterns - symbolic references to contoured, patterned, textured or numerical arrangements that persist in nature.

9. Material Connection with Nature - materials and elements from nature that, through minimal processing, reflect the local ecology or geology and create a distinct sense of place.

10. Complexity and Order - rich sensory information that adheres to spatial hierarchies similar to those encountered in nature.

11. Prospect - an unimpeded view over a distance for surveillance and decision making.

12.Refuge - a place for withdrawal, from environmental conditions or the main flow of activity, in which the individual is protected from behind and overhead.

13. Mystery - the promise of more information, achieved through partially obscured views or other sensory devices that entice the individual to venture deeper into the physical environment.

Spaces and Functions The spaces within the design can be separated into four categories. Spaces to: support learning; support health and well-being; promote interactions and sense of community; and enrich the student experience at ECA. As depicted in the diagram, it is not one space/ function that enriches the student experience, but instead the combination and unity of the spaces provided at The Rev. The terminology used references the ‘home from home’ concept which underpins the project direction.

The concept diagrams here aim to capture a sense of the project, using the forms of the design in an abstract and stripped back way. Hexagons feature prominently throughout the design language of the scheme and the rigid geometric grid form is another motif seen across the project, inspired by the form of the existing building. These concept diagrams portray the juxtaposition between the imperfect and organic fluidity of planting within the scheme and the sharp, clean lines of the space’s concrete framework .
