a «Ballata delle acciughe» (The anchovies’ ballad), starring Dario Vergassola and organized by Kiwanis as a benefit for impoverished local families at the Teatro degli Illuminati in Citta di Castello, was a huge success. At the show’s opening President Lucio Lelli stated “its aims had been fully realized and a follow-up was likely”. The show was presented by Marco Mariucci, accompanied by Fabio Battistelli on clarinet and guitarist Giovanni Seneca, and the Ligurian comedian produced a relentless barrage of jokes, taken from his book, improvisation, readings, cabaret and free performance.
by Massimo Zangarelli La ballata delle acchiuge is the first book that’s entirely yours from which you’ve drawn for the show... «That's why I was careful not to
write rubbish, now that Garçia Marquez has passed away, I can start to write! Usually I do a reading with Davide Riondino interspersed with music evocative of certain situations (Hendrix, Veloso, Crosby, Stills & Nash); in Città di Castello I entrusted the music to Battistelli and Seneca». What prospects do you think cabaret has these days? «It’s a genre in ruins because the public has been disappointmented too often. Unfortunately, good TV no longer exists, the only thing that counts is ‘luck’ with the three agencies that control everything (books, movies and TV), and if you're not in with them you're fucked». Your teachers ranged from Gaber to Jannacci. Who do you think has had the most influence on you, and who do you think are today’s talents? «I lived for a whole year in the theatre with Jannacci, I was fond of and have great memories of him. I met Gaber at a festival in Venice where I was the worker and Benigni and Grillo were the stars; he enjoyed
coming to see me when I acted with Dandini. Today I feel Paolo Rossi is a unique character, while I am very attached to Riondino who has a great technique in both theatre and improvisation». With Riondino you have revisited great classics such as those of Cervantes, Flaubert and Dumas in your own particular style... «The nineteenth century provides timely insights, like in 'Traviata of the Camellias', I journey through music and literature from Verdi to Dumas where I mess around and Riondino creates culture». Who is funnier - the new comedians or the president of your Sampdoria Ferrero? «He’s exactly as you see him and in his favour he’s never spoken much about Samp since he was there. The only person better than him is.... him, and his imitation of Crozza is when he’s at his funniest...but in a taking the piss way – it’s perfectly normal».
