V domu deluje cela vrsta sekcij in skupin, od najboljšega slovenskega pevskega zbora v Argentini do folklorne in gledališke skupine, sobotne slovenske šole itd. Minister Žmavc je ob tej priložnosti društvu ob 60-letnici ustanovitve izročil priznanje urada.

V soboto, 22. oktobra, sta predsednik Pahor in minister Žmavc v celoti namenila slovenski skupnosti. Po obisku v Slovenskem prekmurskem društvu Bernal so predsednik, minister in veleposlanica v slovenski oddaji Okence v Slovenijo v živo nagovorili rojake.

The minister discussed the possibility of improvements with Tjaša Lorbek, a Slovenian language lecturer in Buenos Aires, the Argentine capital – currently, there are approximately one hundred people enrolled in the Slovenian language course, mostly descendants of Slovenian immigrants who came to Argentina between the two world wars, and also some Slovenian language teachers who teach in Slovenian Saturday schools. The most current topic, however, is the Triglav Slovenian Club which was established through a merging of three smaller clubs and funded by the community of Slovenian pre-war immigrants who mostly came from the Slovenian Littoral. As the members are aging, the club is facing a membership deficit and is consequently increasingly difficult to maintain.

The management gave the president a tour of the premises housing an archive, the editorial board of the Svobodna Slovenia Weekly, Slovenian language classrooms, event hall, and a church. What followed was a visit to the Slovenian Prekmurje Association in Bernal and the President’s, Minister’s, and Ambassador’s live radio appearance on the Slovenian channel

Okence v Slovenijo (Window into Slovenia). The channel is among the most popular in Buenos Aires and therefore reaches a great majority of the Slovenian population. On this day, the President – in the company of the Minister and Ambassador Jadranka Šturm Kocjan – met with the representatives of practically all Slovenian associations in Argentina, including those from Bariloch, Mendoza, Chaco, Entre Rios, Cordoba, and elsewhere. Intervju: Adrijana Mandl

Prepotovali ste ogromno sveta.

In seveda Venezuela in nasploh Južna Amerika. Del mene in del mojega drugega doma.

Kaj najbolj pogrešate iz Slovenije?

8 Moja Slovenija

Najbolj pogrešam tiste drobne, posebne trenutke z mojimi dragimi. Družino, trenutke z mamo in prijatelji, tiste

s poslom, ker so v tem času spremenili zakonodajo. Ti novi zakoni zadnjih nekaj let so zelo rigidni.

In vedno mi primanjkuje časa, ker takrat opravim vse obveznosti in delo z gosti in popotniki, poskušam se videti z vsemi prijatelji in največ preživeti z družino.

Interview: Adrijana Mandl

Adrijana from Venezuela: Contact with Home Culture Is Immensely Important to Me Adrijana Mandl lives in South America, namely Venezuela – an unexplored country that boasts many a natural wonder. She went there out of curiosity and the land fascinated and later inspired ber. However, the real reason why she remained there was love. Today, Adrijana owns an eco-friendly traveling agency which welcomes travelers from all over the world.

In the eyes of an average inhabitant of Earth, it is dangerous to travel to Venezuela, let alone live there. What is your opinion on the matter? Have you ever felt unsafe? It is true that South America has always been considered dangerous. But I think that it is always worth to be a bit more objective, have a traveler’s sense, to know or be aware of where you are traveling and how to behave there, to respect the local culture, and not stand out. There are certain countries or parts of countries that are dangerous and those need to be avoided. In the case of Venezuela, these are the big cities or parts of big cities – they have always been known to be dangerous. I avoid those places at all costs and always check in advance what the situation would be like on the way.

You have seen a lot of the world. Which country impressed you the most and why?

Each country is special in its own right and has an element of magic to it. The answer to that question depends on what the person answering is most interested in and attracted to. I was the most impressed by Japan. I was fascinated by its simplicity and the less-is-more feeling to it, the Japanese esthetics, tea rituals, etc. I will always carry a part of Japan with me, regardless of where I am. Then there are Nepal, 10 Moja Slovenija

namely Dharma Sala, and India. The latter was very special to me. And I cannot forget to mention Venezuela and South America in general. However, Venezuela and Columbia are – if I may say so – my countries. They are both a part of me and my second home.

What do you miss the most from Slovenia?

I miss those little special moments with the people who are closest to me. I miss my family, the times with my mom and friends, talking to my friend over coffee. I guess I could say I miss personal contact, especially for the last few months – I’ve been experiencing some difficulties with electricity and internet and cannot be online as much as I would want to. And that is priceless. Aside from the contact with people, I also miss the four seasons of the year, the spring, and flowers. I miss the colorful nature that characterizes Slovenia.

How often do you return to Slovenia and what are some of the things you like to do during your visits? Do you have a favorite spot? I try to return at least once a year, if possible during the spring. And I’m always on a tight schedule due to all the things I have to do and people I have to visit. I try to see all my friends and spend the majority of my visit with my family. I have some favorite spots, for example at home with my

SLOVENIANS AROUND THE GLOBE

family, in the vineyard, and also – of course – somewhere in Ljubljana enjoying a cup of tea with my friend. I always go there.

What do you do for a living in Venezuela? What are the conditions like in Venezuela for foreigners who wish to start their own business?

I work in tourism. I own a small eco-friendly traveling agency and I travel or organize trips and vacations for travelers who wish to either travel alone or with my agency. Others who are a bit less adventurous can visit me and my little travelers’ hotel. Currently, Venezuela is facing certain issues and political problems and, consequently, living here is a true adventure if you want to do everything that needs to be done. For the last two years, the situation has not been favorable for foreigners and it is nearly impossible to start a business due to the many changes that have been made to the law. These new laws are very rigid but I think that they are going to change. In the time I came here, it was also hard to start a business, but throughout the years things worked out and enabled me to do business normally.

What are some of the things people who visit Venezuela have to see? From the point of view of eco-tourism, Venezuela has always been genuine, wild, and attractive for people who are interested in such destinations. I can only say that it is magical. The nature here is marvelous and I fell in love with it the moment I came here. It is one of the reasons I stayed here. There are many different ecosystems to see and cultures of living to experience. Tourists are frequently also interested in the wild South American temperament – the more Caribbean culture which is playful, screaming, and loud.

What advice would you give to the young who are considering moving and living abroad?

I would advise them to think thoroughly about what it is they want in their lives and where they want to go. They need to explore the potential and possibilities in the country they are interested. And, of course, they need to follow their goal, remain true to themselves, preserve their values, follow their gut, and always have an open eye, be positive, and persevere. They must not expect their path to be easy – especially in the beginning – because going abroad is anything but easy. However, I think anyone can find a place for them in the world if they really want it and have a clear vision of it. Moja Slovenija 11

V torek, 18. oktobra, sta omenjena pevca amsterdamskemu občinstvu na opoldanskem koncertu predstavila pesmi in dvospeve slovenskih skladataljev Ipavca, Lajovica, Škerjanca, Merkuja, Čopija in Jenka.

High-Noon Performance by Slovenian Singers in Amsterdam Opera House Stopera is the name of the majestic building located in the center of Amsteram. It is home to the City Hall and the Music Theatre where each season the best opera and ballet performances take place. Quite often, Slovenian artists also take the stage – recently, the soprano singer Vida Matičič and tenor singer Ambrož Bajec-Lapajne wowed the audience with their performance of the Queen of Spades. On Tuesday, 18 October 2016, the two singers performed in front of the Amsterdam audience in a high-noon concert, singing the works of Slovenian composers Ipavec, Lajovic, Škerjanec, Merkuj, Čopi, and Jenko. The audience were provided an English translation of each individual piece. Accompanied by Nathalie Doucet on the piano, Ambrož BajecLapajne was the first to conjure a vividly melancholic Slovenian atmosphere. What followed was a series of dialectal songs from the Slovenian Littoral, where Vida Matičič comes from. The young artists finished their performance with a series of duet songs – among them also Na tujih tleh (On Foreign Soil), bearing a special meaning. The massive audience – which filled every last corner of the opera house’s impressive foyer - graced the performers with a big round of applause. Especially happy to see Matičič and Bajec-Lapajne, were their compatriots from Slovenia, among them also two representatives from the Slovenian Embassy in the Netherlands.
