V spremstvu predstavnikov Univerze v Mariboru, izr. prof. dr. Vlaste Kučiš, red. prof. dr. Maria Plenkoviča in dr.

Z začetkom novega šolskega leta so namreč zelo intenzivne aktivnosti za organizacijo in izvedbo pouka slovenskega jezika v vrtcih, osnovnih in srednjih šolah.

Minister Gorazd Žmavc Visits Rijeka, Croatia lishment of concrete cooperation between institutions and the economies of both countries.

The strategy for cooperation between the Republic of Slovenia and indigenous Slovenian minorities in the neighboring countries is focused on a coordinated, synergic and strategic approach to all the important economic factors in Slovenia and the neighboring countries (state authorities, companies, chambers of commerce, minority association, diplomatic and consular representatives, other economic factors, and individuals on both sides of the national border) for the merging or alignment of capital, knowledge, experience, human resources and activities. Such a system will strengthen and existing and create new economic flows in areas where Slovenian minority members live and Slovenia. It will also encourage competitiveness in third country markets, enabling a more homogenous vision of economic cooperation between minorities and Slovenia. For this purpose, Gorazd Žmavc, the Minister for Slovenians Abroad, visited the Croatian city of Rijeka on Tuesday, 4 October 2016. Accompanied by representatives of the University in Maribor, Vlasta Kučiš and Mario Plenkovič, and Aleksandra Pivec from the Government’s Office for Slovenians Abroad, the Minister met with the representatives of the Croatian Chamber of Commerce in Rijeka and spoke about the importance of economic and regional development in minority areas. In his speech, the Minister emphasized the significance of regional development and cooperation on all levels, which is also an essential factor in future developments of the European Union and its constituent regions. With the representatives of the Croatian Chamber of Commerce in Rijeka, he spoke about the possibilities of concrete cooperation. Both sides have acknowledged the numerous possibilities and potential for cooperation. In future, many entities from the fields of economy, public sphere, and civil organizations for the pursuit of goals which are based on joint planning and developmental perspectives, will have to be taken into account. Representatives of both sides spoke about concrete activities for the preparation of joint projects across the border. Their decision was to connect supportive institutions from both Slovenia and Croatia, as they can aid in the processes of preparation and implementation of such projects. They stressed the importance of utilizing funds from the European Union in the implementation of joint projects in different fields of work. They also acknowledged the possibility of connecting regional chambers of commerce to plan and implement concrete activities, for example helping Slovenian and Croatian companies enter the markets of neighboring countries. On this occasion, Minister Žmavc also met with Boris Rejec, a representative of the Slovenian minority in Rijeka (Slovenian Minority Council, Rijeka). They spoke about the importance of preserving the Slovenian identity, culture and language in the area. With the start of the new school year, the community is actively concerned with organizing and implementing Slovenian language lessons in kindergartens, primary, and secondary schools.

Minister Gorazd Žmavc in Argentina Upon his arrival at Buenos Aires on 19 October 2016, Gorazd Žmavc, the Minister for Slovenians Abroad, had three meetings. Herman Zupan, the most prominent Slovenian businessman in Argentina and former Honorary Consul General in Argentina for the Republic of Slovenia, held a reception for the minister in his Interpack factory. The minister discussed the possibility of improvements with Tjaša Lorbek, a Slovenian language lecturer in Buenos Aires, the Argentine capital – currently, there are approximately one hundred people enrolled in the Slovenian language course, mostly descendants of Slovenian immigrants who came to Argentina between the two world wars, and also some Slovenian language teachers who teach in Slovenian Saturday schools. The most current topic, however, is the Triglav Slovenian Club which was established through a merging of three smaller clubs and funded by the community of Slovenian pre-war immigrants who mostly came from the Slovenian Littoral. As the members are aging, the club is facing a membership deficit and is consequently increasingly difficult to maintain. Moja Slovenija 7

THE BUSINESS WORLD

Importance of honorary consulsfor economy highlighted at gathering Ljubljana - The importance of opening doors to Slovenian businesses in foreign markets, especially those outside the EU, was highlighted as a two-day annual gathering of Slovenia's honorary consuls got under way in Ljubljana.

Honorary consuls “come from the business world, have experience and ties in their markets and can open certain doors,” said Foreign Minister Karl Erjavec, pointing to economic diplomacy as one of the pillars of Slovenian foreign policy. Erjavec noted that the second meeting of honorary consuls hosted by his ministry was aimed at presenting Slovenia and its economy to the diplomats and establishing or strengthening ties with representatives of Slovenian state institutions and businesses. Slovenia’s location as an entry point into Europe was also highlighted at the opening of the event, which will see the 85 guests visit the port of Koper, the coastal town of Piran and the world-famous Postojna Cave and meet representatives of companies from western Slovenia.

THE BUSINESS WORLD

Business Conference “Slovenian Entrepreneurship Crossing Borders” in Munich On 13 October 2016 in Munich, the Government’s Office for Slovenians Abroad organized a business conference entitled Slovenian Entrepreneurship Crossing Borders (Slovenska podjetnost kroži prek meja). This is the eighth conference in the cycle entitled Cross-Border Cooperation of Local Businesses (Mednarodno povezovanje lokalnega podjetništva), which has so far been organized in Slovenia by the Government’s Office for Slovenians Abroad. Hence, this was the first event of the kind which was organized outside Slovenia. More than 60 Slovenian entrepreneurs – either those who came to the event from Slovenia or those who live and work in Germany – attended the event.

The purpose of these conferences is to encourage the cooperation between Slovenian entrepreneurs from Slovenia and abroad. This also has a positive effect on helping small and medium-sized Slovenian businesses enter foreign markets – all through cooperation between entrepreneurs of Slovenian origin. The conference enabled relatively new Slovenian businesses operating in Germany (Slovenian-Bavarian Association in Munich, International Business Club Slovenia in Munich, and GeriS Business Club in Nuremberg) and the Slovenian Economic Association in Klagenfurt to present their establishments. The guests at the conference were addressed by Gorazd Žmavc, the Minister for Slovenians abroad; Branko Meh, the President of the Slovenian Chamber of Craft; Jožef Keček, the Consul General in Munich; and Klaus Kaiser, the President of the Bavarian Association of Commercial Agents. Networking was the highlight of the event, enabling entrepreneurs to establish new crossborder business connections and get new acquaintances.

ZAMEJST VO

Večina so že priletni ljudje.

Kakšni zanimivi projekti in prireditve?

SLOVENIAN MINORITIES

Resia – People do not know that they are speaking a Slovenian dialect Resia (Rezija) is a picturesque alpine valley and a comune (an Italian near-equivalent of municipality), located in north-eastern Italy. It borders two Slovenian municipalities, namely Kobarid and Bovec, and four Italian comunes – Chiusaforte (Kluže), Lusevera (Bardo), Resiutta (Na Bili), and Venzone (Pušja Ves). Luigia Negro was born in Resia in 1965. She studied foreign languages and tourism in Lignano Sabbiadoro and works at the headquarters of the Union of Slovenian Cultural Associations (ZSKD) in Resia. She speaks Resian and, as she told in the interview for Moja Slovenija, she learned it’s actually a Slovenian dialect when she was 20 years old.

Miss Luigia, what is your current position at ZSKD?

ZSKD is a cultural establishment of the Slovenian minority in Friuli-Venezia Giulia. ZSKD brings together associations from three different regions, namely the Trieste (Trst), Gorizia (Gorica), and Udine (Videm) regions. It has four headquarters located in Trieste, Gorizia, Cividale (Čedad), and Resia. The Resian headquarters were opened in January 1990 and I’ve been an employee here ever since. Our office is situated in Stolvizza (Solbica), the former parish. The role of the Union on Resian soil is to help shape the cultural life in the valley below Kanin. The Rozajanski Dum cultural association and the Museum of the People of the Resia valley are also members of the union, and my work is linked primarily to the operation of these two associations. The Rozajanski Dum association is dedicated to the preservation of the Resian dialect while the museum is more history-oriented.

How would you describe life in Resia – it seems to be quite idyllic, especially taking into account all the surrounding wonders of nature?

I was born in Resia and the valley means a great deal to me for that reason alone. However, there is no denying the beauty of the surrounding nature, for example the magnificent Mt Kanin. The nature is clean and intact, there are many forests, streams, and hiking trails. Forty years ago, there was a massive earthquake in the area and it destroyed nearly all the villages. In Stolvizza and Korito, you can still see what the houses used to look like. The valley was once more beautiful as more people lived in the area. Life is great for those of us who live here, however, it is sad to see how the population is declining. The elderly are dying and few children are born. The youth still remain in the area, even young families, as the drive to work is not that long – many work in the nearby Friuli region. It would be nice, though, if more families with children lived here.

Do you, by any chance, know how many members of the Slovenian minority live in Resia? What are some of the main events and activities you organize? As is the case with other three valleys (Veneto-Benečija, Torre Valley-Trska dolina, and Val Canale-Kanalska dolina) where the minority is present, nearly all of us speak a Slovenian dialect – with the exception of children. There aren’t many Furlan and Italian people in the region but we are noticing that more and more houses are being sold to nonmembers of the Slovenian minority. There are approximately a thousand people in the valley, most of them elderly. It

is interesting that when you use the word “Slovenian”, most people here aren’t even aware of the fact that they’re members of the Slovenian minority and that their language, Resian, is actually a dialectal variety of the Slovenian language.

Do young people take part in the activities organized by your associations? Are they aware of their origin and are they eager to learn where they come from? Young Resians are fond of their home and culture. There is little knowledge about our origins though and, as I have mentioned, the history is unknown – particularly the part pertaining to Slovenian history and language. They don’t teach that in schools.

How would you describe the current condition of your economy? Are you suffering from the aftermath of the economic crisis?

The Resia valley has always been poor. After the earthquake, the situation improved slightly. However, from a broader perspective, the economic state of the Furlan region as a whole is not that bad. Some adjustments have to be made. In the valley, there’s a company that produces diamonds drills used by dentists, and there’s a cooperative society. Apart from that, everyone else works outside Resia, commuting by car on daily basis with.

What are, in your opinion, some other possibilities to bring Slovenians in the area closer together? What could still be done in terms of that?

The surrounding mountains are high and the road connections bad. The landscape has always been and will always be unfavorable for good connections between Veneto, Torre, Resia, and perhaps even Val Canale. However, some connections are maintained through Slovenian establishments and channels like Zveza, the Institute for Slovenian Culture, magazines like Novi Matajur and Dom, Trst A radio station, and the Slovenian TV channel, broadcast from RAI in Trieste.

What are your plans for the future? Any upcoming projects and events? Currently, the main project is the renovation of the Plocova house in Stolvizza, led by the Museum of the People of the Resia Valley, which will provide the museum with additional showroom area. I believe this will contribute to the promotion of both our valley and our culture. The museum will most likely open next year and will also have a section dedicated to oral tradition.
