Dear Villanovans and Friends, Welcome to the 2012 Villanova University Business Leaders Forum. I appreciate you taking the time from your busy schedules to participate in what has become a signature Villanova event. It is my hope that the Forum provides you with an opportunity to connect with one another, engage in important dialogue, and learn more about Villanova and its strategy for the future. This year’s Business Leaders Forum affords a setting to publically introduce you to Patrick G. Maggitti, PhD, The Helen and William O’Toole Dean of the Villanova School of Business. His energy, creativity, integrity, inclusiveness, and collaborative style have made him exceptionally successful and, I believe, an ideal leader to move VSB forward. I encourage you to get to know Patrick and work closely with him to ensure that Villanova and VSB achieve excellence. Once again, a highlight of the Forum will be the presentation of the Rev. Joseph C. Bartley, OSA Alumni Medallion to a distinguished Villanova School of Business alumnus/a. This year’s recipient is Sheila F. Klehm ’83 VSB, a member of the Villanova University Board of Trustees and Executive Director, Morgan Stanley Private Wealth Management. Sheila’s distinguished career, commitment to her community, and extraordinary service to the University and the Villanova School of Business combine to make her a worthy recipient of this honor. It gives me great pride to acknowledge Sheila’s tireless efforts on behalf of Villanova and her community. Progress continues on many projects throughout the University, and I invite you to stroll around to see the changes in person. The second year of the three-year Transformation of the Campus Landscape Initiative is nearly complete and includes the construction of a new Grotto in between Austin and St. Rita Halls and the creation of the Kennedy Ellipse in the area in between Kennedy, Dougherty, and Corr Halls. Renovations to the Italian Kitchen in Dougherty Hall have resulted in the creation of Café Nova, although for many this space will always be The Pie Shop. We continue to move forward with the planning and approval process for residence halls and related projects proposed for the current main parking lots along Lancaster Avenue. Change is never easy or quick, but I am confident that these notable improvements to the campus, combined with our excellent academic programs and student services, will allow Villanova to better serve its students. Thank you for your participation in this year’s Business Leaders Forum. I am sincerely grateful to each of you for everything that you do for Villanova as we continue to work together to ensure that we deliver an outstanding education rooted in the Augustinian tradition. VSB Dean’s biography

The Helen and William O’Toole Dean of the Villanova School of Business Patrick G. Maggitti, PhD, is The Helen and William O’Toole Dean at the Villanova School of Business (VSB). Dr. Maggitti is also associate professor of Strategic Management and Entrepreneurship and the former Carmen and Sharon Danella Director of the Center for Innovation, Creativity, and Entrepreneurship (ICE Center) at VSB. Prior to joining VSB’s faculty in 2008, Dr. Maggitti was a faculty member at both Temple and Saint Joseph’s Universities. Dr. Maggitti is a widely-recognized scholar in the areas of entrepreneurship and strategic management. He has authored numerous publications in top management journals including the Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Management Studies, Research Policy, and Academy of Management Executive. His paper, “Information and availability cascades among the media and investors in the US IPO market,” was recognized among the best papers for thought leadership in the field of entrepreneurship in 2008. His research interests focus on dynamic processes, including strategy, innovation, entrepreneurship, decision-making, search behavior, and market and nonmarket based competition.

In 2011, he received the “Villanova University Outstanding Teaching Award” for faculty with fewer than seven years of service and in 2004 was the recipient of the “Allen J. Krowe Award for Excellence in Teaching” from the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland. Prior to academia, Dr. Maggitti spent nearly 15 years in the steel and mining industries, where he founded two successful companies and held a variety of roles, including chief executive officer, director of national sales, and board member. He has also consulted with a variety of international organizations—including several Fortune 500 companies—on many facets of strategy and entrepreneurial thinking. Dr. Maggitti received a BS in chemistry from Saint Joseph’s University, an MBA with high honors from the Johns Hopkins University, and a PhD in strategic management from the University of Maryland, College Park. He lives in Saint Davids, Pennsylvania, with his wife, Sara, and their two sons.

Dear Villanova Alumni, Parents, and Friends, It is my distinct pleasure to welcome you to the third annual Villanova University Business Leaders Forum. As we approach the US general election, this year’s Business Leaders Forum focuses on “Economic and Political Transitions.” Our keynote speaker, Michael A. Smerconish—a nationally-syndicated radio host, newspaper columnist, author, and MSNBC contributor—is eminently qualified to provide us with insight into the election and its potential ramifications. Mr. Smerconish will be followed by a distinguished panel of industry executives including Catherine M. Keating ’84 A&S, Head of Investment Management Americas, JP Morgan; Michael J. Thomson ’80 VSB, President and COO, SunCoke Energy; and Robert A. McMahon ’79 VSB, Leader, US Policy and Government Relations, Merck & Co., Inc. Our notable speakers are certain to provide a lively discussion and Q&A as we anticipate the upcoming Presidential race. I would like to take this opportunity to once again congratulate Sheila F. Klehm ’83 VSB, 2012 recipient of the Rev. Joseph C. Bartley, OSA Alumni Medallion. Sheila is a former chair of the VSB Dean’s Advisory Council, and she is currently a member of the Villanova University Board of Trustees. Sheila’s service to Villanova and her community have been exemplary, and VSB is honored to recognize her accomplishments at this year’s Forum. I’ve had the opportunity to work with many of you on initiatives including the Villanova Center for Innovation, Creativity, and Entrepreneurship (ICE Center). She has also served on the Board of Trustees at the Morristown Beard School, as an Endowment Committee member at The Peck School, and in 1993, co-founded the Student Partner Alliance, a Newark based nonprofit providing financial assistance and mentoring to economically disadvantaged high school students, where she is a Director Emeritus. Shelia F. Klehm ’83 VSB Executive Director Morgan Stanley, Private Wealth Management Division

Shelia Klehm is currently an Executive Director in the Private Wealth Management Division of Morgan Stanley, where she provides comprehensive wealth management solutions to ultra high net worth individuals, family offices, trusts, foundations, and endowments. A leader in the field of wealth management, Klehm has been named to Barron’s List of Top 100 Women Financial Advisors. In 2011, Klehm was selected as one of the “Best 50 Women in Business” by NJBiz. Prior to joining Morgan Stanley, Klehm was a Managing Director at the JP Morgan Private Bank, where she ran the Private Bank’s business in New Jersey and upstate New York. During her 22 years with JP Morgan, Klehm focused almost exclusively in Private Wealth Management. For more than seven years she held positions in the International Private Bank, serving some of the most prominent European and South American families.

Klehm’s philanthropic activities extend into numerous charities throughout New Jersey. She served as President of the Women’s Association of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, an ex-officio member of the Board of Trustees and the Executive Committee, and a member of the Nominating and the Governance Committee. She has done extensive fundraising for numerous foundations. As a trustee of the Hank Klehm Foundation, Klehm, along with her son Hank, provides financial support to improve the lives of teens undergoing cancer treatment. Klehm and her son also speak on behalf of the New York Blood Center and other health care organizations to raise awareness regarding the importance of donating blood. Klehm is co-founder and Board Member of Gifts that Give.com, an online retailer whose mission is to support charity by giving 20% of the value of purchases to the charity of the customer’s choice. Sheila Klehm and her husband, Henry Klehm III, reside in New Jersey with their two sons, Hank and Bryce.

A graduate of Villanova University, Klehm is an extremely active alumnus. She is a member of the Board of Trustees, where she serves on the Investment Committee and The Student Life Committee. Klehm also served as Chair of the Dean’s Advisory Council of The Villanova School of Business and has been a member of the Advisory Board since 2002. Passionate about education, Klehm was appointed to the Women’s Leadership Board of Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government in 2011, which is committed to the advancement of women and issues

Michael A. Smerconish Nationally-syndicated radio host, newspaper columnist, author and MSNBC contributor

Michael A. Smerconish is a nationally-syndicated radio host whose daily program reaches more than fifty markets across America. He is also a best-selling author, a contributor to MSNBC and TheDailyBeast, and a columnist for the Philadelphia Inquirer who has been re-printed in various newspapers across the country. Confident, enthusiastic, and expressive (traits essential to his radio career), Smerconish shares fun talk radio stories about topics that bring people together while discussing the political issues that divide us. He addresses the polarization in Washington and attributes it to a number of factors including rewarding bad political behavior with fundraising opportunities, the emergence of passion and conviction as the new “seniority,” gerrymandering, and—most importantly of all—the media and the stories it chooses to publicize. Smerconish was the first radio host to interview President Barack Obama, and he has interviewed him more often than any other radio personality. Smerconish has also interviewed Presidents Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush, as well as Vice Presidents Al Gore, Dick Cheney, and Joe Biden, and Senator John McCain.

Smerconish became a radio and television commentator after being inspired by his early political experiences, including working as an advanceman for (then) Vice President George H.W. Bush and in a subcabinet level position in the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Smerconish is the author of five books, two of them New York Times best-sellers. His published books include: Flying Blind: How Political Correctness Continues to Compromise Airline Safety Post 9/11; Muzzled: From T-Ball to Terrorism, True Stories that Should Be Fiction (one of his best-sellers); Murdered By Mumia: A Life Sentence of Loss, Pain and Injustice (another best-seller); Morning Drive: Things I Wish I Knew Before I Started Talking; and Instinct: The Man Who Stopped the 20th Hijacker. Smerconish has often been recognized for his radio work. Talkers Magazine has consistently named him one of America’s most important talk show hosts, and Radio and Records named him the nation’s 2009 “Local Personality of the Year.” In 2011, the National Association of Broadcasters selected him as a Marconi Award finalist. He has also been the recipient of several Achievement in Radio Awards. Philadelphia magazine named him the city’s best talk show host, as well as one of the city’s most powerful citizens.

Additionally, Smerconish is an on-air contributor with MSNBC. In 2008, he covered both the Democratic and Republican National Conventions for the network. He appears regularly on Hardball with Chris Matthews (a program he has guest hosted) and has been a guest on virtually every television program where politics

Catherine M. Keating is the Head of Investment Management Americas at JP Morgan, responsible for overseeing one of the largest providers of investment management services with more than $700 billion in client assets. She is also a member of the JP Morgan Chase & Company Executive Committee, the senior leadership group of the corporation, and a member of the Asset Management Division Operating Committee. In addition, she serves as a director of the JP Morgan Chase Foundation.

Robert A. McMahon currently leads Merck’s US Policy and Government Relations function. Mr. McMahon and his team represent Merck in Washington, DC, and are responsible for US policy development and legislative advocacy on Merck’s key federal issues. The US Policy and Government Relations team also oversees the administration of the Merck PAC and the company’s grassroots program.

Ms. Keating was previously the CEO of United States Private Banking at JP Morgan. Prior to joining JP Morgan in 1996, Ms. Keating was a Partner in the international law firm of Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP. Ms. Keating is a frequent author and speaker on investment and wealth planning topics. She has been featured in interviews appearing in Bloomberg Businessweek, The Wall Street Journal, Barron’s, The Financial Times, and Institutional Investor, among others, and has appeared on CNBC and BusinessWeek TV. She has been named one of the Most Powerful Women in Banking by US Banker. Ms. Keating serves as the Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees of Villanova University, as well as on the Boards of Trustees of the Girl Scout Council of Greater New York, the Inner-City Scholarship Fund, and the New York Women’s Forum. Ms. Keating received her BA from Villanova University and her JD from the University of Virginia School of Law.

Throughout his 30-year career, Mr. McMahon has developed a reputation as a passionate, results-oriented leader with a keen ability to motivate a diverse employee population. He is also known as a steadfast advocate of Merck’s mission of putting patients first. A CPA by training, Mr. McMahon began his Merck career in finance. Over the course of his long career, he has held a variety of commercial roles with both domestic and international responsibilities. Starting in 2000, he served as Vice President and General Manager of Merck/Schering-Plough Pharmaceuticals where he guided the formation of a standalone joint venture between the two companies. In 2004, he was appointed Vice President, Marketing and Franchise Business Group Leader of the Arthritis and Analgesia Franchise. In 2005, Mr. McMahon was appointed General Manager, Hospital and Specialty Products, and then became General Manager of the Cardiovascular/Metabolic Business Unit. In October 2007, he was promoted to President, US Pharmaceuticals and in August 2008, he assumed leadership of Merck’s US Commercial Operations and moved to Washington in April of 2011. Mr. McMahon is a 1979 graduate of Villanova University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting. He began his career with Arthur Andersen & Co. in their New York Office. He also worked at the Squibb Corporation prior to joining Merck.

Michael J. Thomson serves as President and Chief Operating Officer of SunCoke Energy, Inc., the largest independent producer of metallurgical coke in the Americas. SunCoke Energy is a technological and environmental leader in advanced heat recovery coke production- producing high-quality coke for use in iron and steel making, while capturing process generated waste heat for co-generation into useful steam and electricity.

James Politi is the US Economics and Trade Correspondent for the Financial Times based in Washington, DC. In this role, he covers US economic policy, economic data, and US trade policy.

From 2011 through 2012, Mr. Thomson and SunCoke Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Fritz Henderson worked with Sunoco Inc.’s management team on a strategic two-step divestiture and planned separation of SunCoke from Sunoco. Mr. Thomson joined Sunoco, Inc.’s leadership team in 2007 as Vice President, Sunoco, and Executive Vice President, SunCoke Energy. Before joining SunCoke Energy, Mr. Thomson served 17 years in the power industry, most recently as President of PSEG Fossil LLC. Prior to PSEG, Mr. Thomson worked with Corning, Inc. from 1982 through 1990. Outside of SunCoke Energy, he has served on the Dean’s Advisory Committee/Center for Innovation, Creativity & Entrepreneurship at the Villanova School of Business (VSB) and most recently joined the VSB Dean’s Advisory Council. Mr. Thomson is a member of the Institute of Management Accountants and is a Certified Management Accountant (CMA). He earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Operations Management from Villanova University and then went on to achieve a Master of Business Administration degree in Finance and a Master of Science Degree in Accounting both from Syracuse University.

Politi was previously based in New York as the FT’s US deals reporter, covering mergers and acquisitions and private equity, after joining the FT in London in 2002 on the international capital markets desk. He took up his current position in Washington in March 2008. In 2006, Politi was awarded an Honorable Mention at the Overseas Press Club’s Malcolm Forbes Award for ‘Best Business Reporting from Abroad,’ for the FT’s coverage of Cnooc’s attempted takeover of Unocal. In 2007, he won first prize for his coverage of Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, the private equity firm, at the M&A International Awards. In 2004 and 2007, Politi was named one of NewsBios/TJFR’s ‘30 under 30’ Rising Stars. In 2000, Politi won the Nico Colchester Prize for Young European Journalists. As a Colchester fellow, he was chief researcher and commissioning editor for ‘Europe Reinvented,’ a four-part special supplement published with the FT in January/February 2001. Politi has appeared on CNBC, MSNBC and BBC-TV and ABC and NPR radio. Politi received his Master’s degree from the London School of Economics, a Bachelor’s degree from Georgetown University, a University degree from the University of Florence, and a certificate from the international program, Institute of Political Studies, Paris. Center for Global Leadership The Center for Global Leadership (CGL) contributes to the development of VSB’s global strategy, emphasizing integrated international business (IB) studies and responsible global leadership; serves as a source of new ideas, resources, and innovations for VSB’s international curricular initiatives and service and outreach activities; and acts as a catalyst for faculty research and innovation in IB practice, ethical leadership, and global corporate responsibility across VSB and the University. In addition to encouraging broad participation in global programs, CGL increasingly emphasizes emerging markets, especially the BRIC nations—Brazil, Russia, India, and China—as well as smaller developing countries, because these economies are expected to lead global growth and prosperity in the future. CGL works closely with the student-led International Business Society (IBS), which provides a global perspective for students interested in international careers, and Business Without Borders, a group dedicated to demonstrating how business skills can benefit local and global communities through various service-oriented projects and initiatives. In 2012, 50 percent of VSB’s graduating class participated in study abroad and/or international internships, and 25 percent had an IB co-major or minor. EMBA and fast-track MBA students all participated in their required international experience, traveling and undertaking projects in Argentina, Chile, China, Hungary, South Africa, South Korea, and Turkey.

Center Highlights and Accomplishments • CGL launched the Global Leadership Fellows program for the Class of 2015, creating an opportunity for a select group of VSB students to integrate global leadership and international experiences throughout their undergraduate experience. Students will complete the requirements for the IB co-major, participate in two study abroad experiences, and complete customized coursework in IB and globalization. • CGL supported visits by General Anthony C. Zinni ’65 VSB, a retired four-star general in the US Marine Corps and former Commander-in-Chief of US Central Command, who shared insights on ethical leadership, crisis management, and strategy; David Shinn, a former ambassador and Foreign Service officer, who spoke on the new dynamic of China’s significant and increasing investments on the African continent; and Robert McMahon ’79 VSB, who leads Merck’s public policy office and federal government affairs activities based in Washington, DC, who discussed critical developments and future trends in the pharmaceutical business. • CGL co-sponsored the Villanova Leadership Summit, the Political Economy of International Organizations (PEIO) conference, and a panel of Advisory Council members that explored how global leadership skills can be developed by students and professionals throughout their careers. • CGL will serve on a committee leading Villanova’s participation in the 2014 Internationalization Laboratory of the American Council on Education (ACE), a learning community that assists participating institutions in developing a strategy for comprehensive internationalization and assessing progress and outcomes. • CGL is led by new Director, Kim Cahill, who brings extensive experience as an international educator at the University of Pennsylvania and Temple University, and Faculty Director, Jonathan Doh, who was recently recognized as 12th most prolific leading international business scholar in the world.

The Daniel M. DiLella Center for Real Estate The Daniel M. DiLella Center for Real Estate was established to provide outstanding academic and professional development opportunities in the field of real estate to Villanova students. Our real estate programs strive to deepen students’ understanding of the technical components of the real estate industry, of their social responsibilities as sheppards of land and environment, and of the importance of creating opportunities for service and giving whenever possible. The center supports faculty research and teaching, ensuring relevance in the curriculum through the incorporation of site visits, experiential learning projects, industry-standard tools, and the perspectives of industry experts. As of spring 2012, the center offers an undergraduate co-major and minor in real estate—with real estate focused courses including investments, law, development, modeling, accounting, capital markets, and economics— and a real estate specialization within the Villanova MBA program. The center connects and mobilizes the Villanova real estate community—through educational programs, thought leadership initiatives, and networking events—to expand the horizons of a new generation of real estate leaders and to generate vibrant conversations among real estate professionals on issues facing the real estate industry.

Center Highlights and Accomplishments • The undergraduate real estate co-major was approved and implemented this year. New courses offered to co-majors allow students the opportunity to become ARGUS certified and to be exposed to their choice of real estate capital markets, accounting, or economics. • The DiLella Center for Real Estate membership program was established in fall 2011 to provide opportunities for Villanova real estate community members to connect and engage. The program offers members access to industry events and conversations, faculty research briefings, and special publications, including student résumé books and a membership directory. During the 2011–12 year programs were held in Philadelphia, New York, and Washington, DC.

• The Villanova Real Estate Challenge is a national real estate development case competition for students from top undergraduate real estate programs in the United States. Hosted by VSB, the challenge provides national recognition for Villanova’s real estate program among both industry and academic audiences. This year, twelve universities competed for $12,000 in prizes. • The annual Commercial Real Estate Career Conference brings top employers to campus to connect students with career and mentorship opportunities. A panel of recent graduates shared their experiences during their first few months of employment. Jerry Sweeney, CEO of Brandywine Realty Trust, provided the keynote presentation in which he shared a sampling of life lessons and advice with current students and young professionals. Over 60 real estate professionals were on hand to discuss valuable professional experience opportunities available through the Villanova Real Estate Internship Program and beyond graduation.

Looking Ahead The 2012–13 academic year will mark the five-year anniversary of the Daniel M. DiLella Center for Real Estate. To date, over 175 students have graduated from Villanova with a real estate minor, co-major, or MBA specialization. Our real estate academic and professional programs provide a competitive edge to the University and to our students. Looking ahead, The Daniel M. Center for Marketing and Public Policy REsearch The Center for Marketing and Public Policy Research tests the intended and unintended consequences of government regulation on business, consumers, and society. The center leverages Villanova’s strong international reputation, faculty, and executive network in the business and policy arena to provide research that guides business and regulatory processes, while giving students unique networking and consulting experiences that accelerate their career development cycle. The center also encourages development of unique curricular initiatives with its advisory board. In 2010, the center expanded into a series of Strategic Business Units (SBUs) led by Villanova faculty. Students have opportunities for professional development through the center’s Conair International Ambassadors Program and Washington, DC, Internship Program. The domestic program seeks to give students a unique experience in Washington, DC, through continuous engagement with Capitol Hill, while the international program (led by Professor Michael Capella) sends students to Rome for a series of high-level business and political meetings, client interaction, and internships in organizations such as the Italian Parliament. At the MBA level, students have the opportunity to consult for senior government officials. For example, the Fast Track MBA Cohort wrote a book with Director Kozup titled Positioning Mauritius in the International Marketplace: A Pro-Growth Blueprint. This book was presented to the Vice Prime Minister of Mauritius, Xavier Luc-Duval, during his Distinguished Lecture at Villanova on April 23, 2012.

Center Highlights and SBU Accomplishments • The Financial Services SBU, led by Professor Michael Pagano, held a series of high-level conferences in New York City and at Villanova that examined the ongoing changes in the financial services industry. CENTER FOR INNOVATION, CREATIVITY, and ENTREPRENEURSHIP The Center for Innovation, Creativity, and Entrepreneurship (ICE Center) is at the forefront of Villanova University’s strategy to foster cross-college and interdisciplinary opportunities for the collaborative pursuit of knowledge. The ICE Center advances the Augustinian vision by embedding creative problem solving more deeply in the Villanova culture through the development and promotion of initiatives in the related areas of creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

mid-May, students met and networked with Villanovans from companies like Google, Apple, and Facebook and met with entrepreneurs and founders of several Silicon Valley startups. Alumnus Michael Gardner ’67 A&S served as a program coordinator and helped to connect students from the Villanova School of Business, Villanova School of Law, the College of Engineering, and the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences to Villanovans with a wide range of professional backgrounds.

While located within VSB and founded upon one of its four strategic pillars—innovation—the ICE Center’s mandate is unique in its cross-college and primary focus on the creative and innovative skills needed to identify and act upon new knowledge and ideas. Fundamental to new ventures, these entrepreneurial skills are increasingly recognized as being central to success and highly sought after by existing organizations of all types—large/ small/profit/not-for-profit. In recent surveys of executives, the ability to think entrepreneurially was considered the most important leadership characteristic, and more than 60 percent of Fortune 500 CEOs indicate that the ability to think creatively is even more important than intelligence. While traditional entrepreneurship in the form of startup organizations remains a central driver of economic growth, more than 70 percent of existing organizations cite innovation and “intrapreneurship” as key to their future growth and success.

Villanova Entrepreneurs Network Alumnus Rick Anthony, Sr. ’59 A&S joined the ICE Center as an Entrepreneur-in-Residence and brought his signature program, The Entrepreneurs Network, to the University. Now known as the Villanova Entrepreneurs Network, this networking venue connects startup entrepreneurs, serial entrepreneurs, service providers, and alumni who are working on innovative new ventures in the Philadelphia area and beyond. More than 350 individuals have attended the first five Villanova Entrepreneurs Events, including alumni from the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, the Villanova School of Business, the College of Engineering, and the Villanova School of Law. The next Villanova Entrepreneurs Network meeting will be on Wednesday, November 14, 2012, during Global Entrepreneurship Week.

The ICE Center strives to support traditional entrepreneurship and startups, but its broader mission is to symbolize Villanova’s commitment to nurture creative and innovative thinkers. Villanovans are already known to be among the best, most well-rounded students, and the ICE Center seeks to provide opportunities to develop and highlight their entrepreneurial spirit as well.

Center Highlights and Accomplishments Villanova in the Valley The ICE Center’s inaugural Villanova in the Valley program was designed to expose students from across the Villanova campus to the innovative, creative, and entrepreneurial ecosystem of Silicon Valley. Over a five-day trip in

Pitch Day The ICE Center teamed up with the Villanova Student Entrepreneurship Competition (VSEC) and the Beyond Ideas Committee to present Pitch Day 2012 on April 24, 2012. More than 80 alumni, faculty, and community members came to Bartley Hall to judge student entries in the VSEC, business plans in the Entrepreneurship Minor programs (both from VSB and COE), the Electrical and Computer Engineering Senior Design projects, and the prototypes designed in the Mobile Applications development course. Overall more than 250 students participated in Pitch Day, which concluded with a new signature event for the ICE Center—a reception celebrating innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship across the Villanova campus. The Center for the Study of Church Management Statement of Philosophy: The Church is not a business, but it does have a stewardship responsibility to use its resources effectively. Frequently that requires the use of sound leadership and management techniques that are not typically taught to clergy and lay leaders in the Church. Statement of Mission: The Center for the Study of Church Management offers educational programs and conducts research intended to develop the Church’s business plan of the 21st century. Its constituents include all individuals in church leadership and administrative roles who are seeking to become better stewards of church resources by improving their leadership and management skills.

Accomplishments/Achievements Educational Accomplishments/Achievements • Sponsored two one-day workshops, one on Civil Law for Parishes (15 registrants) and the other on Parish Technology (250 registrants) • Co-sponsored a three-day conference (along with the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center) on the topic of “Best Practices in Catholic Church Ministry Performance Management.” Presentations were made by business school professors, seminary professors, and practitioners (53 registrants). • Offered Summer Church Management Institute, a one-week, highly-intensive executive education experience designed for leaders in diocesan and religious order management positions annually since 2006 (97 total participants). • Offered on-site church management programs in four dioceses, presenting on topics chosen by the dioceses (total of 400 priests) • Manage the Master of Science in Church Management program, which is an innovative, online two-year graduate business program that provides students with a high-level skill set in church management. The program is for clergy and laypeople who are interested in strengthening their ability to contribute to the Church’s mission and require the convenience of an online program (a total of 39 graduates from first three cohorts).

Center for Business Analytics The Center for Business Analytics (CBA) leads the development of analytical capabilities of all VSB students so that graduates become known for this critical business skill in the marketplace. The CBA is organized around the three pillars of Curriculum, Research, and Practice, which provide focus on the development, execution, and tracking of the CBA’s strategic objectives. The strategic objectives of the CBA pillars are: Curriculum Pillar • Produce students competent in current analytics practice and application • Lead the development of specializations in analytics in the VSB undergraduate and graduate curricula that will help students address business problems from a crossfunctional perspective • Lead the development and delivery of analytics courses across all undergraduate majors and MBA programs within VSB Research Pillar • Develop new business applications of analytics • Understand and address the managerial issues related to the successful application of analytics in different business contexts Practice Pillar • Collect and disseminate best practices in analytics among business professionals • Assist businesses in improving their capability in analytics • Provide students with opportunities to perform analytical work via internships and consulting projects • Place VSB graduates in analytics positions • Facilitate collaboration between faculty and industry via knowledge management methods

Center Highlights and Accomplishments • Starting in the Fall of 2012, all VSB sophomores are required to take “Business Analytics,” a new course designed to give students exposure to the collection, cleansing, analysis, and mining of data. • An undergraduate business analytics minor was approved in the Fall of 2011. To date, over 45 juniors and seniors have declared for this three-course program. • The CBA hosted Chris Gheysens ’93 VSB, the President of Wawa, Inc., and Bill McDermott, the co-CEO of SAP AG, as speakers in the “Analytics Thought Leader Lecture” series. These visits included lectures to students, faculty, and business guests preceded by lunch and discussions with the CBA Advisory Council and faculty associates. • Two applied research projects were launched based on input from the CBA Advisory Council. In the first project, CBA faculty associates and IBM are analyzing the factors that drive investment in business analytics. The second project examines the use of analytics software on mobile devices vs. PCs. • The CBA initiated a partnership with the Lehigh University Enterprise Systems Center to develop a consulting practice that utilizes analytics to drive business improvement. The projects are staffed by analytics students who are mentored and managed by experienced professionals.
