S3 People and places Handloom Institute Maheshwar, India

The program of the studio was to design a handloom institute in the religeous context of Maheshwar which is famous for maheshwari sarees. The program consisited of all-year long exhibition space which exhibited some of the good maheshwari sarees as well as the work form the institute’s workshop. The intend of the program was to create a public space catering all the functions of a desirable weaving institute. Exercises included understanding the people through the socio-cultural aspects in vast network around the city through the representation of the streets with houseforms, temples, shops, etc. The site was located near the bank of river Narmada which was connected through a ghat followed by chowk which served a major role around the space as it was surrounded by houseforms and cluster of temples. the site had gentle contours. Thanks to the chowk which made a huge impact on the site to attract people.

Design process My intend of the studio was to create terraces as spill-over spaces so that the proportions of the contours commencing from the chowk gets less disturbed, the buildform does not look bulky and massive in the context of maheshwar and terraces involve transition and function rather than being just a roof over a space. Creating communal spaces for the people of maheshwar for how they will adapt to the space was the major intend.

S4 Material and Light Crematorium Ahmedabad, India

The program of the studio was to design a crematorium on edge of a lake in the village of Rancharda which lies in the suburbs of Ahmedabad. This studio focused on how the material plays a role in the designing of a buildform and how light penetrates through the builtform enhancing the texture of the material and light quality in the space. This studio consisted exercises as a part to whole. Wall sections, material surveys, making models of different case studies from real materials of what they have been built of, charcoal sketches, abstract model and rendering techniques showing the light, shadow and texture of materials. Hands on work on the chosen materials with execution varying from formwork, finishing and process for a proper case study were involoved.

Design process My concern was not to just design the crematorium, but to express poetic and symbolic relations between the acceptance of life and death, express the rough but smooth journey of life using the materials as rammed earth for the semi rough texture and timber for the lightness yet sturdy feeling. Exploring and expanding the knowledge in articulation of material and light were one of the other concerns for me.

S5 Community Housing Ahmedabad, India

The program of the studio was to design for a community of 90 families in the urban context of Ahmedabad. The intend was to serve the purpose of collective living for certain aggregate of people in urban areas. The feeling of home calls for a sensitive approach towards tailor-making individual house units v/s stardardized units for all. In a way community housing is a creation of a collective atmosphere where one can live on the basis of sharing and responsibility rather than being staid alone and ownership driven. The exercises were driven on the basis on mapping the activities and the daily usage of the landscape around the houseforms which guide the living in a typical pol in Ahmedabad. The site of the studio was located in Vasna area of South Ahmedabad which is in close proximity to a lake which shares the boundary. Amenities such as hospital, petrol pums, BRTS and METRO stations were there in a radius of 800mtrs to the site.

The community was based in Vasna. The community was vast, people from different working class of lower income group belonged to it. the design process took place keeping in mind all the expierences and manifestations i’ve had in my life and observed throghout in a housing society. Creating a journey to home was my major intend that included all the pause points, places of interacions, and much more of that.

MS Manual Skills

The aim was to develop a skill set for getting hands-on as well as software based with the understanding of architecture through it. This contains selected works from all the semesters which included sketching with different mediums such as charcoal, watercolor, graphite, pencil colors and oil pastels, documentations using measuring by hands, feet and other units of our own standardization and measuring tape as well, model making with explorations of different materials such as cellulose based boards, earth, concrete, MDF, steel, timber, bricks, bamboo and acrylic sheets, rendering sheets with different mediums such as pencil colors, ink stamp method, fine-points, graphite and by using softwares. Explorations and progress on softwares included in this modules.

DP Design Process

Design Process included exercises related to graphics, forms, shapes, compositions and design development to understand the principles of design in a way where the process to understand the process included a process as well. Various exercises such as creating compositions from different elements such as dots, lines, shapes, abstract part of a sketch and 3D objects and modules, understanding the settlement and brainstorm it to get a aim to bring change to livelihood of the same, designing on various aspects in different exercises such as spanning and balancing a cube and having a process from designing or creating something at a smaller scale to have an input and taking forward the process to a larger scale.

Details! This contains of all the detail drawings made from all the semster. Working on case study detail drawings to designing detail drawings of my own studio projects. it consisted of drawings such as door and window, detailed wall sections, staircase details, truss details, junction details, plumbing drawing sets and detailed plans. From minor details drawn at 1:2 scale to further bigger scales, this drawings becomes the part in which a building gets erected with the materials it breathes through.

SWS1 Towards the unknown M’hamid, Morocco Madrid, Spain

The workshop was a collaborative between Terrachidia and IDEA, Indus University. It was a Hands-on workshop on different construction techniques used locally in the southern Morocco followed by documentation of the streets and the typology of houseforms present there. Techniques such as Adobe, Rammed Earth, Plastering/Rendering with earth were experienced and explored handson. Restoration of the village square known as the kasbah was our major task, creating sittings of rammed earth, plastering and restoring the fortified gate of the village and making bricks for usage to restore some houses as per requirements. Studying the housing typologies in morocco, the ornamentation in the houses of marakkech, the garden courts of palaces in marakkech. It was followed by a heritage walk in the city of Toledo (UNESCO world heritage site) and Madrid in Spain.

SWS2 Design and Build

Mandangadh, Maharashtra The workshop was a collaborative between Thumbimpressions Collaborative (TIC) and Put Your Hands Together (PYHT) for IDEA, Indus University. It was to understand the implications of natural materials using the traditional knowledge and modern technologies. The intend of the workshop was to design and execute the construction to get the on-site experience. The task given was to design a pavilion with bamboo trusses and rammed earth wall, sketches and mockup models were made. The workshop guided participants to think sensibly towards the use of natural materials keeping in mind the parameters related to design, on-site problems, climate and material.
