HOW TO MAKE
PASTE PAPERS FROM MOHAWK FINE PAPERS
WHAT WILL YOU MAKE TODAY?
Making your own paste papers requires a few simple tools and easily accessible ingredients
Paste papers have been used by bookbinders and book artists for over 400 years as a way to create covers and end sheets. Paste papers remain a simple and effective means to a high impact end. Besides the historic uses in the book arts, paste papers are being rediscovered to create one-of-a-kind greeting cards, gift wrap, personalized stationery and decorative boxes.
Depending on your preference and project you can use the same tools you would to paint a room: either a paint brush or paint roller. Feel free to mix and layer colors. The most amazing results come from experimentation.
For a smooth and washable surface use a sheet of plexiglass which you can find in any hardware store.
The best papers to work with should retain their shape and strength. Choose a heavier weight like Mohawk Superfine, Eggshell finish 100lb text. When wet, this paper will not excessively curl or cockle as it dries.
MIXING PASTE Wheat-based wallpaper paste available in powdered form at your local hardware store is the best choice. Once mixed, this can be covered and kept in the refrigerator for several weeks.
PIGMENT Common acrylic paints available at an art supply store are all you need to add color. A brand like Liquitex is available in small tubes and jars.
DESIGN TOOL While the paint is still wet, you can use any number of objects to manipulate and decorate the surface of your paste paper. A few common tools include: notched adhesive spreaders available at your hardware store, dry brushes, natural sponges, plastic combs, and rubber stamps.
In a blender, mix paste per product instructions. Add pigment until you reach desired strength. Blend.
DRYING AREA Once you have completed your paste paper, carefully remove the sheet from the plexiglass to dry. We recommend laying the wet sheet flat on a large piece of cardboard. If that is not available, you can hang it over a clothesline to dry.
