Leadership throughout the Early Childhood Profession: Research, Policy, and Practice

Leadership has many faces and plays many roles in early childhood education. Some leaders conduct research on best practice, while others share and apply research findings in the policy arena. Other leaders ensure great practice by overseeing child development programs and schools, educating future teachers, or taking part in program governance and administration—including members of the NAEYC Governing Board, officers of state and local Affiliates, and school and center program administrators. The 21st National Institute for Early Childhood Professional Development will present sessions that address leadership in these key areas—research, policy, and practice.

About the Institute What happens at the NAEYC Institute? NAEYC’s National Institute for Early Childhood Professional Development features interactive, thought-provoking, researchbased, practical sessions—and other learning opportunities— that Institute participants agree is a reason to come back each year. In 2012 you will find the following:

An Opening Session (Sunday at 2:00 p.m.)—provides focus and challenge for the 3½ days of sessions and other events that follow.

NAEYC hosts the National Institute for Early Childhood Professional Development as a unique opportunity for colleagues to learn and share together. This year’s program will feature more than 200 sessions, networking opportunities, forums, exhibits from prominent publishers, and other resources.

Keynote Speaker Alfred E. Osborne Jr., Keynote Speaker for the 21st National Institute for Early Childhood Professional Development Alfred E. Osborne Jr. is Senior Associate Dean and Professor of Global Economics and Management at UCLA’s Anderson School of Management. He is also founder and faculty director of the Harold and Pauline Price Center for Entrepreneurial Studies. Dr. Osborne, an expert in social entrepreneurship, has led the development of several programs that apply business models to the nonprofit world. For almost 20 years, the Price Center has created and run innovative management development programs, including four in partnership with health care giant Johnson & Johnson. Many early childhood educators have participated in the Head Start— Johnson & Johnson Management Fellows Program. Dr. Osborne received his PhD in Business Economics from Stanford University. He is the recipient of numerous awards including the Richard J. Riordan Spirit of Entrepreneurship Award, the Leadership Award from the Southern California Minority Business Development Council, and the La Force Distinguished Service and Leadership Award given by the faculty at UCLA Anderson. He was recently inducted into the Minority Business Hall of Fame, recognized by Directorship Magazine as one of the top 100 most influential corporate directors in America.

Research Symposium During the Institute, attend Research Symposium sessions Sunday through Wednesday. Pre-Institute Workshops Join us on Saturday, June 9, 2012, to attend one of several Pre-Institute Workshops. These sessions provide an opportunity for an in-depth learning experience in an area of focus—addressing NAEYC’s accreditation systems, developmentally appropriate practice, and children’s social and emotional development. Preregistration for the workshops is required by Friday, May 11. The Pre-Institute day also includes the 2012 Professional Development Summit: 6th Annual National Meeting of States. NAEYC Accreditation of Programs for Young Children: Preparing classrooms and teaching staff to demonstrate quality during the NAEYC site visit 8:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m. This workshop is for individuals who have some understanding of NAEYC’s program accreditation standards, criteria, and process and want more in-depth knowledge of how to prepare for the assessment of their groups. The focus will be on understanding the details of how group-specific evidence—classroom observation and classroom portfolio—is evaluated by assessors during the site visit assessment, then applying that knowledge so teaching staff know how best to prepare themselves, their classroom environment, and their classroom portfolios. NAEYC Staff Assessors will share tips about common pitfalls, most challenging criteria, and ideas for ensuring successful classroom assessments.

Meeting NAEYC Professional Preparation Standards: A self-study workshop for faculty 8:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m. This full-day workshop is designed for early childhood faculty and staff who are engaged in the NAEYC Early Childhood Associate Degree Accreditation process or are working toward NAEYC recognition and accreditation from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). This workshop will focus on the NAEYC standards; evaluating sample key student assessments, rubrics, and data charts; and using student performance data to improve programs. It will be especially helpful for those who are writing program reports, meeting annual reporting requirements, or responding to conditions.

2012 NAEYC Professional Development Summit: 6th Annual National Meeting of States NAEYC’s PD Summit is an intensive day designed for state leaders working to build and enhance early childhood cross-sector systems integration with a focus on professional development and workforce system policies. States need to submit an application identifying a crosssector leadership team to attend the NAEYC PD Summit. Training for Program Administrators Workshops NAEYC’s Training of Trainers (TOT) for Program Administrators workshops are intensive one-day experiences designed to provide program administrators and staff professional development specialists with the skills, knowledge, and materials to train the staff at their own center or school. Each participant will receive a set of exclusive training materials including step-by-step trainer’s manual, master files to create participant notebooks, PowerPoint slides, video clips, textbooks used in the training, and other instructional aids. The trainer’s manual includes information needed to conduct a series of 1½ - to 2-hour workshops, including learner outcomes, agendas, prior-to-session directions, trainer’s notes, participant assignments for between-session practice, and an appendix with additional resources. Training of Trainers for Program Administrators—Developmentally Appropriate Practice: A Training for Teaching Staff 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. This workshop prepares program administrators and staff professional development specialists to conduct a 5-module training program on developmentally appropriate practice (DAP). The training program includes information and activities to enhance staff ’s understanding of the DAP core considerations, principles, and guidelines; effective teaching practices; child assessment; relationships with families; and teaching strategies. Presenters: Peter Pizzolongo, Luis Hernandez, Madhavi Parikh, and Anthony Durborow Peter Pizzolongo is Senior Director, Professional Development Solutions, at NAEYC. In this position, Mr. Pizzolongo works with colleagues to ensure that this nation’s programs for young children, as well as teacher preparation and ongoing education programs, are high quality. He has more than 30 years of experience as an author, training and technical assistance provider, researcher, program evaluator, Head Start and child care agency administrator, child care resource and referral agency director, and teacher of toddlers and preschoolers. Mr. Pizzolongo has co-authored numerous publications, including Caring for Preschool Children. Luis Hernandez brings solid expertise to the NAEYC training program, based on his work with Head Start, child care, and pre-K programs, colleges and universities, and child care resource and referral agencies. Mr. Hernandez serves as a Training and Technical Assistance Specialist at Western Kentucky University, where his work focuses on a range of early childhood education and professional development topics. Madhavi Parikh is Director, Professional Learning Department, at NAEYC. In this position, Dr. Parikh works with her colleagues to develop high-quality learning resources that are delivered as face to face, blended, asynchronous, and synchronous learning events. She served as the NAEYC lead in the revision of NAEYC’s Technology and Young Children position statement, in partnership with experts at the Fred Rogers Center for Early Learning. She has served as the Project Director for the Head Start Training & Technical Assistance center for Region III, and has extensive work experience with early childhood programs as a trainer, director, education manager, and teacher. She has been a co-developer of NAEYC’s multimedia resources on developmentally appropriate practice; the computer based training series, HRM Journal: Human Resources Management in Early Childhood Programs; and other blended learning products. Anthony Durborow is Senior Professional Learning Specialist at NAEYC. In this role, Mr. Durborow is part of the development team responsible for creating a diverse catalog of high-quality learning opportunities for the early childhood field. He has extensive experience working with NAEYC Accreditation of Programs for Young Children and has provided case management, mentoring, and training for early learning programs engaged in QRIS. He has also served as a preschool teacher, NAEYC-Accredited center director, trainer, and adjunct instructor. Indianapolis, Indiana  June 10–13, 2012

Promoting social and emotional competence in preschool environments: Training-of-trainers 8:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m. This full-day workshop is a TOT program for administrators and others with training responsibilities in early childhood programs. Participants in this TOT workshop will be prepared to conduct the Promoting Social and Emotional Competence Preschool Training Modules for preschool teachers. Developed by the Center on the Social and Emotional Foundations for Early Learning (CSEFEL), these evidence-based, user-friendly training modules help early childhood educators promote children’s social and emotional development and meet the needs of the growing number of children in preschool settings with challenging behavior and mental health challenges. The modules have been used by hundreds of trainers in a variety of settings. Participants in this TOT will receive the full Training Manual— with Facilitator’s Guide, trainer notes and scripts, activities, and participant handouts—and a DVD of the PowerPoint slides with embedded video clips as well as all of the print materials in a PDF format. Below is some of what Indianapolis has to offer right in walking distance of your hotel! If rain should make an appearance, don’t fret, much of downtown is connected via climate-controlled skywalks. Downtown Indianapolis offers more than 200 restaurants— many within walking distance of the Marriott Place Hotels. However, if you don’t feel like venturing out, the Marriott Place Hotels offer a variety of dining options, including High Velocity, Osteria Pronto, Tavern on the Plaza, T.G.I. Friday’s, and more. With more than 100 specialty stores, Circle Centre Mall is downtown Indianapolis’ foremost shopping, dining, and entertainment complex. This four-level shopping mall also offers a vast array of dining options and a United Artist movie theater. Use the skywalks . . . they will take you there! The Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art offers one of the finest collections of Western and Native American art and culture in the United States. Next door is the Indiana State Museum with three floors of Core Galleries that tell the story of Indiana. The museum also houses the state’s first IMAX Theater that delivers 2-D and 3-D films on a 6½-story screen. Across the street is home to the Indiana Historical Society. Since 1830, this nonprofit society has been the state’s official storyteller. The society maintains the nation’s premier research library and archives on the history of Indiana and presents a unique set of visitor experiences called the Indiana Experience.

Your payment must accompany the Institute Registration form. Please do not fax your form more than once–your credit card will be charged each time your Registration is received! Please make check payable to “NAEYC Institute Registration.” NonU.S. registrants: Be certain that your fees are paid in U.S. funds drawn on a U.S. bank, bank draft, or credit card. Students: Enclose a legible copy of your valid student ID with the Registration form to be eligible for Student Registration rates. Your school name and your ID# must be legible on the copy. Missing student information will result in an incomplete registration. A name badge will be mailed in advance to full-Institute attendees who register by Friday, May 11. The Institute Final Program will not be mailed in advance. You may pick up a copy on-site in the Institute Registration area starting Saturday, June 9, at 9:00 a.m.

CEUs

NAEYC, an authorized IACET provider, will offer Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for the 21st National Institute for Early Childhood Professional Development. For more information, please see page 6 and visit www.naeyc.org/institute.

Graduate credit

Portland State University will offer graduate quarter credits for the 21st National Institute for Early Childhood Professional Development. For more information, please visit www.naeyc.org/institute.

Fees are nonrefundable after May 11. Cancellation prior to May 11 will incur a $75 processing charge per registrant. Telephone cancellation is not accepted; certified mail is recommended. When submitting a refund request, please include the name and Registration ID of each registrant, the name of the organization or person receiving the refund, and the mailing address for receiving the refund. Refund requests must be mailed to NAEYC Institute Refunds, c/o CompuSystems, Inc., 2805 South 25th Avenue, Broadview, IL 60155-4531 Refund requests are processed after the Institute using the same method of payment used for Registration.
