interview with Carolyn Magnani

I am always interested in encouraging young people with talent but I never imagined I would find someone as young as the young man I am interviewing here. Sam Hurwitz is a nine year old singer/songwriter who has been formally writing songs for three years now. I met him and his family at a recent Open Mic at the Nyack Village Theatre and was so impressed speaking with him. I knew I had to interview him for MMZ. He plays guitar in a band called Amplifier on Fire with his 11 year old brother Harrison, who plays drums. He was very poised and spoke so well, the evening we met. He told me right away he is into alternative rock music. He mentioned how his friends like pop music and how he stands

up to them, defending his taste in music. He mentioned his favorite band is Wilco, therefore, I wasn’t too surprised by some of his answers when I interviewed him. I found him quite amazing, I think you will too. MMZ: Who has influenced you the most in your songwriting Sam: I’m not really sure. The songs just come to me as I’m playing. But, my favorite band is Wilco - I’ve been listening to them since I was 2. I also love the Avett Brothers and I just started listening to Mumford and Sons. MMZ: Did you start playing guitar first or writing songs first?
