Your world to wear At first, everything started with a dream. Then we realized that dream with a purpose and vision: We offered fashionable alternatives to women who choose to dress in-line with their beliefs, so that they look and feel good exactly as they want. In our journey that started 10 years ago, we as Modanisa have always preferred to stay close to women who wish to dress as they believe, to listen to them, to be aware of their needs, to provide support when needed, and to be a companion that helps them make their life journey as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. As Modanisa, we believe in empowering women for a strong tomorrow. We provide the means for women to feel comfortable in what they choose to wear and help them look and feel good, without compromising their beliefs in their lives. A woman who wants to dress in line with her belief will be more and more involved in social activities with each passing day; she will pursue her goals and dreams without compromise. She will embrace life with all its possibilities while proudly embracing her choice of clothing. Now, we are taking this journey one step further and proclaiming the best answer modest women can give to those who question her choice of style, behold; “your world to wear “, our motto to the whole world: Your road to take, “Your world to wear”

HOW TO BE STYLISH

WITHOUT COMPROMISING MODESTY The globally popular Syrian American influencer Summer Albarcha talks about her journey on social media and gives insight on what it means to be in that industry: “The best part of being an influencer, for me, is to show other women how to be stylish without compromising modesty.”

How’s your mood these days? What are you most thankful for? I’m feeling relaxed and ready to take on new pursuits and creative projects. I’m always thankful for my family, faith, health, and home. Can you name a few tips that you use to lift your mood? I’ve been taking workout classes for the past year, and it has seriously helped boost my mood and made me more active. With a lot of us working from home, it’s important to remember to move your body. You have a really engaged following on Instagram. At what point did you feel you became an “influencer”? I understood that I had a loyal following after being invited to Dubai Fashion Week in 2014, and having people there recognize me in person from my account. Can you describe being an influencer in three words? Small business owner. How has your psychology changed since becoming an influencer? I’m more aware of the global

world I live in and connected with people, culture, and trends beyond my own city. What’s the best part about your job? Being able to work with brands I love in my own style, and hopefully inspire other women to not compromise modesty for style. Do you have any red lines as an influencer? I really value my privacy and choose to share content that solely reflects my personal style. I also would not promote any illicit content that does not align with my religious values and morals. Lastly, what advice would you give a young woman who wants to become a successful social media influencer? To always have a greater purpose or goal in everything you share, and to find your niche to build a consistent brand. Read more on Modanisa Connect at https://blog.modanisa.com/en/.

Interview

aKsam

A ‘‘tradition’’ that will speak to all women 8 women from different professions, the members of “aKsam” have one thing in common: music. We were honoured to have a pleasant conversation with the band members, who toured all over Turkey giving concerts to female audiences with their wide repertoire from western classics to rock, from folk music to world music. aKsam began with the slogan “We don’t have kisir*, we have music”. What’s the story behind that? THE VIOLINIST, GÜLNIHAL ANSWERS: It all began when three college students realized that they shared the same dream although they had distinct backgrounds: “To come together and blend their own music with other women’s and share their music with more women...” 38

Although the idea seemed utopian for each of them individually, they realized its potential when they came together, and asked themselves , “Why not?”. After hours spent in the music room of the university and a great deal of work done in terms of music and organization, aKsam has become a big family embracing many different female musicians, photographers, organizers, and all kinds of volunteers and it keeps renewing itself with every new member since then.

(*Kisir is a women’s traditional get-together dish in Turkey. It’s a spicy salad made from bulgur wheat, similar to tabbouleh. It is often associated with “gold days”, when women come together, socialize, and have fun.) Although each of you have different careers, music bonds you. Is it difficult to find harmony among the members? How does being a part of the group, in other words an “aKsam-er”, motivate you?

“WHY SHOULD BEING A SUCCESSFUL ENGINEER, A BUSY LAW STUDENT, OR A FULL-TIME MOTHER TRYING TO RAISE HER CHILDREN WELL PREVENT YOU FROM BEING A GOOD PAINTER, WRITER, OR MUSICIAN?”

THE ZITHERIST, NURDAN ANSWERS: The band consists of eight people. I am the zitherist of our group, but I am also an architect. Gülnihal is our violinist, as well as a sociologist and writer. Reyta is the pianist; she is a sociologist and a politics and international relations graduate. Gülnihal and Reyta are academics. Güzide, our drummer, is studying pharmacy. Another violinist in our group, Nida, also plays the piano; she studies pharmacy and sociology. Zeynep is the lead singer and guitarist of our group. She is an opera and psychology graduate, as well as a storyteller. Our other pianist,

Betül Sena, is a clinical psychologist. Last but not least, Sena Nur, is the graphic designer and photographer of the group, she is our everything. In fact, we are all women who try to capture the music within us. Yes, we basically have different tendencies and interests. As you said, having so many different professions, we have one thing in common and that’s music. When I think of this question, the first phrase that came to my mind was “Architecture is music frozen in space”. I started playing zither when I was still in high school. I had no idea that I was going to be an architect. My overflowing love of music collided with architecture at university and that was when I truly knew, “Oh this is me”! Someday I wanted to feel the rise in the music I made, and that’s when my path crossed with “aKsam”. I realized that everyone has come a long way like me, and we all have very precious experiences. I can’t tell you how remarkably fun it was to make a “we” out of that mess! But being an “aKsam-er” is not just about us; the energy and smiles of hundreds of women filling huge con-

‘woman’ in Turkish. We loved it, and our listeners immediately embraced it. If you spot an aksam whose K is not capitalized, it is not aKsam!

What does the ladle in your logo mean, and why is the K in “aKsam” capitalized?

What time of the year do you give concerts? What would you recommend to those who want to listen to aKsam?

THE SOLOIST AND GUITARIST, ZEYNEP ANSWERS: Years ago, when the idea of “aKsam” hit us, we knew that this was not going to be just a band. aKsam was a women’s music movement, calling on all women to make music. We didn’t have a graphic designer back then, but the best part of such sincere small groups is that everyone is willing to do everything, and this has always been the case among us. I also had some graphic design skills so we rolled up our sleeves and got started. What would our starting point be? We especially wanted the logo to be associated with being a woman. I was interested in symbols because I worked with fairy tales back in the day, and I started working on the ladle, considering that it meant femininity and fertility in Anatolia and many other lands. To emphasize it’s a women’s music band and to make the name more characteristic, we capitalized K, which is the initial of the word kadın which translates to

THEIR GRAPHIC DESIGNER AND PHOTOGRAPHER, SENA ANSWERS: If you’re asking about specific times, I would like to say long summer evenings. Especially if the concert is held in open air… To answer your question, we don’t have a particular time for the concerts. We all must devote time to our professional careers and personal lives besides the concerts. For this reason, I would like to recommend to women who want to attend aKsam concerts to follow our social media accounts so that they do not miss the concerts that may suddenly take place at any time. If you feel like you are too far away from Istanbul, and can’t attend our concert, don’t worry! The next one may be in your city because we don’t have a route, we have music.

We see that you have a wide repertoire combining different instruments with different sounds. You mix classical music compositions, movie soundtracks and folk songs. How do you decide which pieces to play in your concerts?

THE DRUMMER, GUZIDE ANSWERS: As aKsam, we take great pleasure in creating the repertoire. As you mentioned, we have a very colorful repertoire from Turkish Folk Music to classical music, from ethnic folk songs to rock. In rehearsals, we improvise for a long time until we get the songs in which different instruments come together in harmony with each other. Our repertoire is ready when east meets the west one song and forms a tune in which everyone can feel something unique when listening to it. 40

How do you choose your stage outfits?

THE PIANIST, BETÜL SENA ANSWERS: The only issue we pay attention to is color harmony. We usually prefer black on stage. Because we want to ensure harmony with the stage and to draw more attention to the instruments. If we prefer some other color, we choose a hue, and everyone adjusts their own clothes according to that hue. There is nothing special that we pay attention to other than the harmony.

establish aKsam art school. We want to offer education in different art branches in this school along with music and instrument courses. Also, we dream of an aKsam art house that will give opportunity to women to flourish and develop talents, and we want to bring together our music and as many women as possible. We appreciate creating authentic music nourished by each other’s interpretations. Of course, we dream of giving a concert of our own compositions. We don’t have any album plans anytime soon. But why not? It would be very exciting for all of us. What message would you like to give young Muslim women who want to fulfill their dreams?

Do you have any goals for the future? Have you ever thought about releasing an album?

THE VIOLINIST, NIDA ANSWERS: Our consensus as women who have had diverse education and careers but have never left music is to

THE PIANIST, REYTA ANSWERS: First, I would like to congratulate the young Muslim women who want to pursue their dreams. Having a dream and goal is the most valuable part of this work. It takes courage to dream also, determination and a lot of effort when trying to pursue it. The next is trusting in God’s plan… Another important point that I personally have become accustomed

to and that I believe everyone in aKsam represents is that we should not limit ourselves to a single dream, a single goal, a single identity. Why should being a successful engineer, a busy law student, or a full-time mother trying to raise her children well prevent you from being a good painter, writer, or musician? Every experience we have supports one another. Although it is tiring to keep up with everything at once, when you feel that you are successful in some way, you enjoy that rush as much as the result. We always answer this common question, “I want it so much, but am I too old to play an instrument?” with a question answer, “Why not?”. In other words, it is never too late for anyone to pursue their dreams. We believe this is not about one’s age. With our wide repertoire ranging from western classics to rock and various ethnic music, we are happy to break some stereotypes as a group of women whom some people are not accustomed to seeing on stage. All “aKsam-er”s who come to our concerts and performances, accompany our music and support us, have a big share in that.

“ABOVE ALL, IT IS INVALUABLE FOR WOMEN FROM EVERY COMMUNITY TO COME TOGETHER COMFORTABLY AND MEET IN THE SAME RHYTHM, CLAPPING THEIR HANDS TO THE SAME SONG.” FALL 2021 •

Seasonal changes are periods where we need self care the most. Once fall arrives, the soil gradually begins to prepare itself for winter. Nature changes its tones, trees shed their leaves, and gloomy days increase. These changes have an impact on us, even if we don’t realize it. They may lead many to despair, turn away from social life, feel lonely or inadequate, and question their life choices. If you find yourself experiencing such a shift in your mood, here you will find a few tips to help you feel more positive and motivated.

44

DON’T NEGLECT YOURSELF

THIS FALL

Not everything has to be perfect. It is totally normal that September might evoke a sense of obligation in you. There are a lot of challenges you are faced with: a new school term, meal prep for winter, seasonal wardrobe changes, house cleaning etc. While a new month means new beginnings, it also brings new responsibilities - which can be disappointing. Try to set small goals for yourself instead of expecting that everything must be perfect and will fall into place from day one. Don’t be too hard on yourself by thinking that you have to catch up with everything and don’t be afraid to get support from your loved ones. You will realise that this is an easier way to get happy. Adopt some positive daily routines. For example, if you can’t get up early in the morning, set your alarm to go for a walk at 8 am. Start the day by having a light and nutritious breakfast. Also, make a weekly habit chart and hang it on your fridge. Your self-confidence will improve as you have daily routines. Be careful how you spend your free time. If you have habits such as spending time on YouTube and watching TV, you can use these moments to improve yourself by learning useful material. It is no longer difficult to learn a new language, get to know the culture of a country

you are curious about, or enroll in online learning programmes that will contribute to your education. Strengthen your social relationships. Don’t let the relationships you build during the summer come to an end with fall. As humans are social beings, staying connected is more important than ever for our mental wellbeing during these transitional periods. Make sure that you have a healthy diet and regular sleep schedule. Both will create positive changes in your life, such as gaining concentration, thinking positively, and feeling energetic. Also, vitamin D, the sunshine vitamin, will increase the amount of energy in the body and minimize the symptoms of reluctance, weakness and depression. Plan your weekend getaway in advance. Once widely accepted idea that summer is the only season to go on a vacation is no longer popular. Now we are looking for ways to have small getaways at every opportunity. If you find it difficult to plan yourself, you can join groups that organize events such as cinema or theatre nights, cultural trips, and meet new people and see new places. Let this fall be a period when you can focus on your emotions, direct your choices with your thoughts, and change something in your lives in a positive way. Believe in yourself, stay with hope and love!

Your world to wear Stronger tomorrow, that’s the kind of brand we are, believing that women can become stronger. This pursuit began 10 years ago. We listen to women who prefer to dress according to their beliefs; we’re always aware of their needs; always provide support when they need it most; in fact, we are every woman’s long lost friend who encourages them to be as comfortable and

happy as can be in their life journey. We want women to be able to look and feel good in every step they take, without compromising their beliefs; let them be more present in social activities; so that they can pursue their goals and dreams. Now, we are honoring our 10-year friendship with a motto that best describes our journey: Your world to wear, Modanisa.

becomes a global brand ambassador for Modanisa Muslim trailblazer and fashion model Halima Aden has been named as Modanisa’s first-ever global brand ambassador. The world’s largest modest fashion retailer has signed an exclusive two year agreement with Aden, who will lend her face, name, and creativity to Modanisa’s marketing efforts around the world, and also design two new collections. 64

One of the most famous Muslims on the planet, Aden’s new role for Modanisa marks her return to fashion ten months after quitting the industry to avoid having to compromise her religious beliefs. Her new partnership with Modanisa, which specialises in affordable ready-to-wear apparel for Muslim women, avoids many of the challenges she faced while working with other brands. Speaking about her new position, Aden said: “I’m so excited to be working with Modanisa. They have been an ever-present in my career: my first modest fashion catwalk, my first collection, and now my first global fashion role, all with Modanisa. They share my faith and values, and fully respect my choices as a Muslim woman. I’m coming home.” Since catapulting to fame in a Modanisa burkini at an American beauty pageant in 2016, Aden has regularly modelled for the brand, from strutting down the runway at Modanisa’s Modest Fashion Weeks in London, Istanbul and Dubai, to appearing in multiple promo campaigns. In 2019, the Somali-American cover girl turned designer in collaboration with Modanisa, producing a collection of 47 headscarves that sold out in weeks. “We’re thrilled to have Halima Aden back working with Modanisa. She is an icon of our times, who embodies perfectly the values of our brand: smart, stylish, and passionate, wanting to live her best life without abandoning her religious beliefs. Like our customers, Halima is proud of her Muslim heritage, and seeks a harmonic blend between Islamic traditions and modernity. Her creative energy and positive connection with young Muslim women from all backgrounds will be a fantastic asset for us as we drive forward with our global plans,” said Samim Surel, Modanisa’s Vice-President of Marketing and Brand. Aden will visit the company’s Istanbul headquarters later this month to start work on her collection of shawls, which will be on sale early next year. She will also help unveil the brand’s new slogan on September, 14. The event will double up as a celebration of the innovative e-commerce platform’s tenth anniversary. A pioneering business from its inception, Modanisa. com is Turkey’s first ready-to-wear shopping website. It was launched in March 2011 to cater to Muslim women after affordable, fashionable clothing with greater coverage of their bodies, in line with their Islamic beliefs on modesty. The demand for garments with longer hemlines and sleeves, that are non-transparent and with higher necklines and a looser fit has been phenomenal, generating rapid growth for the retailer. Today, Modanisa ships to tens of millions of customers in over 140 countries and is Turkey’s e-commerce exports champion. Its sights are now firmly set on increasing market share in the Middle East and Malaysia, while also expanding its presence in Britain, Africa, Europe and North America. FALL 2021 •
