The Moat Club Presents

FACTORY GIRLS Directed by Anne Mekitarian

In a Donegal shirt factory five women face the threat of redundancy. They take on management and union and fight to determine their own future: a fight that will change their lives and friendships forever. Frank McGuinness’s major play bears testimony to the strengths and skills of working women, the culture of the work they represent, and the threat to destroy that culture. Linking arms and with curlers in their hair, the factory girls articulate their love and humour, their anger and compassion, their courage and solidarity. Starring Cathy Lawler, Moll Fullam, Mary McHugh, Sarah Broe, Sally Aughney, with Johnny Mooney and Tom McGrath - this is one not to be missed! 1

The Moat Club’s award winning production of The Steward of Christendom by Sebastian Barry makes a return prior to its appearance at the All Ireland finals in Athlone in May. The production, directed by Barbara Sheridan, won nominating festivals in Enniskillen and Ballinamore and has also won several individual awards including six well deserved Best Actor awards for Padraig Broe, as well as awards for lighting and set design, direction and other acting awards. The play, set in the County Home in Baltinglass in 1932, tells the story of Thomas Dunne, who was the Chief Superintendent of the Dublin Metropolitan Police at the handover of Dublin Castle to Michael Collins in 1922.

ROMEO AND JULIET

by William Shakespeare Directed by Peter Hussey

Tuesday 6th May at 8pm Tickets: €12 Concessions: €10

SMALL PLASTIC WARS Written and performed by Pat McGrath, Directed by Alan King, Produced by Bigger Pictures projects. (Supported by Bealtaine Festival). Joe is in total control of his world. It’s a pity that it exists only in 1/35th scale and is made of plastic. Meanwhile back in the real world there’s a competition coming up and Joe just wants to be left alone to build his models and win best in show. Unemployment has finally given him the time to enjoy his hobby of sticking bits of plastic together, but unfortunately his wife, his kids, the bank manager, his nemesis Hermann (whose real name is Brian), the checkout girl in Tesco and Angela Merkel have other ideas. Based on a true story, an amusing account of how one man turned an unfilled dream to bridge the void of unemployment and recession.

Wednesday 7th & Thursday 8th May at 7pm Tickets: €10 In a city dominated, and used as a playground, by two powerful banking families, one spoilt young teenager is thrust into manhood by the events that unfold after he becomes one young woman’s only hope of freedom. Shakespeare’s passionate story of the world’s most famous ‘star cross’d lovers’ is vividly brought to the stage in a hallmark KYT production. Last year the young performers in Kildare Youth Theatre staged a very well-received Macbeth. This year the cast bring to the stage characters who are closer in age to themselves. Romeo is seen as spoilt, bored young teenager in love with being in love, writing melodramatic poetry and disillusioned with the empty and vapid life led by his friends and family, Juliet is a prize, owned by her father and maintained in perfect readiness for marriage by her distant mother, but inside she yearns to escape the prison they’ve placed her in. When she meets Romeo all things change. He feels real love and she sees a chance to get out. His inability to do anything in moderation leads to a chain of events that she must control before she loses her escape route forever. In this production the young are pitched against the old; the young struggle to find a place for themselves in a materialist, capitalist city where they only have value as hooks and bait which their parents use to expand their empires. Played by actors who are close in age to the characters, it becomes truly shocking to see the lengths they will go to – suicide, murder, manslaughter - in order to escape their fate.

The production is true to the text, unedited and running the full length. Music, lighting and costumes are all designed by the young company. ** “McGrath’s wonderful perform- The cast is led by Caolán Dundon as Romeo, Emma Lynch as Juliet, ance does justice to his hilarious, Mo Kadem as Friar Lawrence and Eadaoin Barrett as the Nurse. The 4 of Us My Brilliant

(The Duo) Divorce - Still Going - THE SECRET LIFE OF by Geraldine Aron After a five year hiatus, Paddy Strong 25 Years On Featuring Tara Flynn Casey returned last year with his fourth album The Secret Life Of. It was recorded, produced and mixed at home in Paddy’s kitchen by Paddy and Pat Donne. Pat worked on the first album Amen (So Be It), as well as on the demos for all the other albums. “Pat is responsible for me not throwing away a lot of songs, ‘Saints and Sinners’ included. This will be my first completely independent record, it’s called The Secret Life Of because it’s a throwback to a recording style I used to have before I signed a record deal”. Paddy finished touring his third album Addicted To Company in mid 2009 and decided then that it was time to make an album on his own, without a label. He wanted to let the songs come naturally, but found that, almost immediately, they came along in droves. So he began recording them all over the next few years, and in the last 6 months he chose the 11 tracks that make up the new album The Secret Life Of.

THE 4 OF US have achieved the holy grail in the music industry: longevity. All artists want a career that will span out over decades and to be seen as successful, respected performers. These artists are rare, but sometimes a talent is so undeniable that it creates an unbreakable connection and stamps itself on popular culture. For 25 years THE 4 OF US have been one of Ireland’s best loved bands and a regular presence on the annual play-lists in radio stations all over the country. Listed at No 7 in TV3’s Top 10 Irish Bands of All Time, THE 4 OF US recently celebrated their 25 years in the business with sell-out gigs in Dublin’s Vicar Street and Belfast’s Empire venue, along with a well received appearance on RTE’s Late Late Show where they performed MARY, still one of the most played songs on Irish airwaves. So make a fuss for The 4 of Us as it’s their first time to come to The Moat Theatre…

Why not get pick up a ticket for PADDY CASEY & THE 4 OF US at the same time and avail of a great offer – your two gigs for €30. And if you get 2 for Paddy and 2 for The 4 of Us its just €60! You must get your skates on though and book today as this offer is only valid until 1st June! 9

(Irish Pictorial Weekly (RTE)) Directed by Andrew Murray Produced by Donal Shiels (Verdant Productions)

Tara Flynn stars in this Olivier nominated West End hit; a comedy drama about surviving divorce with a sense of decorum and humour. The hilarious and moving story of Angela, who recently deserted by her accountant husband for a younger model, sets out to survive and enjoy life on her own – she hopes! Alone in a world of, sneaky solicitors, unusual sexual encounters, help-line counsellors and the possibility of doing her own ironing (poverty)! Does she fight to keep her husband? Or should she just move on? “…infectious, bubbly and never depressing…expect to be well entertained” The Daily Express “stunning performance by a multi talented Tara Flynn” Joe Duffy “...truly funny and intelligent, this is a blissfully irreverent tromp through divorce, dating and the search for love” The Sunday Tribune “a modern-day Shirley Valentine” Irish Theatre Magazine
