Let the Good Times Roll!

Who is ready for a step back into the ‘80s with an ‘80s themed Vintage News? This time around we dissect the Midwest Vintage Snow Shows, Midwest Ride-In, ultimate ‘80s party at ERX in Elk River the last weekend in January 2024.

Scott Wakefield Well, we had a great Fall Workshop in Lakeville, Minnesota with over 180 members, guests, vendors, Region 6 volunteers, DNR staff, MnUSA staff and Directors, and the MnUSA Executive Board. Thanks to all for attending; we got a lot done and have a lot more to do. See more information on the Fall Workshop in this issue. Also in this issue you will find great gift ideas for your snowmobile enthusiast. Make sure to get a limited edition 45th anniversary hat or t-shirt while supplies last. Buy a membership, buy a calendar, be the best Secret Santa you can be. We will have a very touching tribute from one snowmobiler to another in this issue’s Milestones.

It’s poll time. Where’s the best Snowmobile Destination City in Minnesota? Answer the question and win out for your best choice, or choices, up to 3. Rendezvous is our next official event where we all get together in the middle of the snowmobile season to relax, and just ride, and have fun. And oh, fun it will be in Region 9 at Thumper Pond, Feb. 8-11th. Registration is open and encouraged; see the registration in this issue. Don’t delay, do it today. Fun times are just ahead as we get those trails in, fuel up the groomer, grease the drag, and print new maps, if need be, and submit trail changes to the DNR. Then it will be time to ride. Let the Good Times Roll!

Minnesota Snowmobiling

From the MnUSA President

See You on the Snow! Mark Kavanaugh Allow me to re-introduce myself; I am Mark Kavanaugh, your new or renewed president of the Minnesota United Snowmobilers Association. I know that many of you know me and, of course, I know many of you, but I thought that I would give you a refresher course on the burning question in many people’s minds of, “Who the heck is Mark Kavanaugh”? Well, I live in the City of East Gull Lake (Brainerd Lakes Area) with my wife, Sue. We have two grown children Luke (38) and Kassi (31). I am co-owner of Kavanaugh’s Sylvan Lake Resort and have been in the resort business since 1969; our resort was one of first in the area to open in the winter to snowmobiling. I am a member of the Pequot Brush Pilots. I have also been the President for the last 13 years of the Crow Wing County Snowmobile Trails Association (CWCSTA), which is comprised of the 12 clubs of Crow Wing and southern Cass Counties. I was also on the MnUSA Executive Board as treasurer, vice president, president and past president from 2011 to 2019. Although I wasn’t in MnUSA at the very beginning, I have been a member of the organization since 1993.I have been riding sleds since I was 10 years old so I guess this upcoming winter season will be my 58th year of riding. What truly draws me to snowmobiling is not the roar of the engine or speeding down a frozen lake; what draws me is the complete experience. With Minnesota winters, you have to find an outlet to get yourself outside and for me that is snowmobiling. There are many winter sports to choose from in our State, and I’ve done all of them, but nothing offers the great experience that snowmobiling does. I guess what it boils down to is that snowmobiling brings out our pioneering roots; we don’t depend on other people to maintain our sport, we do that! As club members, we make sure that our trails are built, maintained, groomed and, above all, we pay for them without any taxpayer input. The added plus, of course, is the great experience of being a member of a club and the social activities that surround club life. For those of you that may be reading this, if you are not a member of a club I strongly recommend you join one! C

As with any sport we, as snowmobilers, will be facing a number of challenges this year, as we do every year, but I am never worried that snowmobilers can’t pull together and overcome those challenges. I need your help to help grow and improve the sport we all love. We have been blessed the last couple years with great snowfall and I’m hoping for another good year. As I make my way around the State at various MnUSA events don’t hesitate to stop and introduce yourself, I love talking to snowmobilers! • On-site restaurant • Airport shuttle • Swimming pool/hot tub • Meeting room • Adjacent Trail Access

From the MnUSA Vice President

Meet Mike Mike Clevenger Let me introduce myself as your new MnUSA Vice President. My name is Mike Clevenger; I am married to Cheryl who has also served on the Executive Board in the capacity of Secretary. We have 2 grown sons, 2 daughters-in-law and recently our first grandchild. We live west of Medford, MN. Since 1968 my family has been involved with snowmobiling. I purchased my first snowmobile at the age of 14. Many fond family memories come from snowmobile trips, club events and MnUSA activities such as the Winter Rendezvous, Fall Workshops, etc. Personally, I have served on the Executive Board of 3 area clubs – Waseca Sno-Secas, Sakatah Trail Sno-Cruisers and Faribo Sno-Go serving as President, Board of Directors, and other club functions. Recently I was Lead Director/Director for MnUSA Region 5 and have been for quite some time and multiple times.

My wife and I are trail riders so we greatly appreciate all the work that volunteers do to groom, clear and maintain the 22,000 miles of trails our state should be proud of. There are issues that may threaten these trails or already are threatening these trails. We must get the word out that trespassing, loud pipes, and speed are the key reasons trails are being lost. We already have an example of a trail in Wisconsin that has closed prior to the season. Everyone must do their part to educate riders who do not see the severity of these issues. I know that I am preaching to the choir, but as our sport is threatened, we must find ways to ensure our sport has a chance to remain alive for many years. This being said, it is also important to get our voices heard through our legislators. Word is out that it is an El Niño season but let’s hope the weather predictors are wrong and we have a great season. There are so many great areas in our state to ride. Explore new places, tell your friends of these areas, and try all the different types of trails we have the opportunity to ride in all 9 MnUSA Regions of the state. Challenge yourself this year to find a new trail, new town, and as always new members! See you on the trails!

Legislative News must also consider whether our friends at DNR Enforcement are able to enforce noise limit violations. They must be brought into the conversation.

You are the Only Reason I Stay Here Christian Franzen “You are the only reason I stay here” is a paraphrase of my wife’s description of winter in Minnesota. What she actually says is a bit more graphic. Her saying this is a way my wife (born and raised in Arizona) reminds me every fall what she gives to our partnership. I on the other hand, have a long and loving relationship with winter from my father teaching me to ski, my college’s freshman/sophomore snowball fight, snowmobiling, to watching outdoor Vikings/ Packers football games. As Minnesotans and life partners, my wife and I coexist and flourish despite our differing opinions about Minnesota Winters. This is similar to the message we as an organization bring around the State and to legislators at the State Capitol. It is an essential message to protect and preserve our trails. The 2024 legislative session will begin on February 12th. This will likely be a short (about 3 months) and very political session. The House of Representatives will be up for election in 2024 and the Republicans will try to overturn the small DFL majority in the election while the Democrats will work to increase their majority. For incumbents, taking good care of their constituents will be a priority. With this in mind, the MnUSA Trails and Legislative Committee discussed the issue of loud muffler and exhaust systems, with particular attention to aftermarket racing mufflers (which exceed 78 dbA.) being used on trail sleds. Landowners and neighbors are complaining and MnUSA should carefully consider and debate this issue before we begin to lose landowners. The committee will be moving forward on this issue to preserve our long standing partnership with our trail land owners and neighbors. We

8

Noise emissions are measured in decibels (“dbA’s). The noise you hear when you are standing next to a washing machine is about 60 dbA. Rock and Roll concerts subject the listener to about 110 dbA. My father’s amp is even louder. Maybe that’s why his hearing is shot. There is an active debate within the national snowmobiling community regarding muffler noise, and there have been numerous law changes to address this issue. For example, in Ontario, modified mufflers and exhaust systems are simply against the law. In Minnesota, muffler noise level is not to exceed 78 decibels at a distance of 50 feet (Mn Rule 6100.5700). The Rule also says the “Snowmobile Safety Certification Committee” must certify the snowmobiles “meet or exceed the applicable noise level restrictions” before sale. Some local governments have stricter noise limits. For example, Little Canada has a noise limit of 60dbA during the day and 55 dbA between 10pm and 7am in residential areas. Although there are laws in place regarding noise for manufacturers and riders alike, we still find ourselves having problems. Our ability to maintain and use our 22,000 miles of trails depends on good relationships with land owners across the state. The issue comes when the Original Equipment Manufacturer exhaust is replaced. And here is where it gets tricky; the same rule cited above states, “Snowmobiles intended for competition purposes only shall be exempt from this part, provided a separate placard identifying that such snowmobile is not so equipped is conspicuously and permanently affixed thereto”. These ‘cans’ or ‘pipes’ are sold separately and are intended for racing but can be attached to any sled. Not every resident in Minnesota is a snowmobiler, and not every Minnesotan looks forward anxiously to winter like we do. We have partners across the state from businesses to land owners to local events (and even races) that we work with yearly for the sport we love. Our job is to preserve what we love with safety, responsibility, compromise, and the occasional tiramisu.

MnUSA News Buy America FRTP Waivers Available

The next round of Federal Recreational Trail Program grants will be open in December with the instructions and application form on the DNR website at www.dnr.state. mn.us/grants/recreation/trails_federal.html The application deadline is February 23, 2024. Snowmobile related trail projects are needed, especially those with multiuse motorized/non-motorized users. After much communication with government officials regarding the need to reinstate waivers, for equipment, bridges, etc., this year there is now a waiver for iron and steel so you are not limited to products that comply with Buy America. FRTP applies the “user-pay/user-benefit” philosophy of the Highway Trust Fund, returning a portion of the federal tax on fuel used for non-highway recreation to the states for trail projects. Presently the FRTP program receives $84M from an approximate $270+M paid in federal gas tax by off highway recreational users per year. Minnesota receives $2.7M from those funds with $2.1M going to the grant program.

Sponsor the Veterans Appreciation Ride

Minnesota Snowmobile Education and Advancement Fund (MSEAF) and Minnesota United Snowmobilers Association (MnUSA) will be hosting the 16th annual snowmobile ride for the Veterans and Active Duty Military personnel in January of 2024 in recognition and appreciation of our veterans who have given part of their lives to serve all of us. The event is for both experienced snowmobilers and those who would like to give it a try.

The IRS has recognized MSEAF as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Donors will receive a card recognizing their donation and tax deductibility of donations. MSEAF and MnUSA thank you for your assistance and sincerely appreciate your support! For more information or to be part of this great event, go to www.mnvetsnowmobileride.org. Registration is now open.

Snowmobile Best Destination Cities Here at Minnesota Snowmobiling magazine, we are looking for the best Minnesota city snowmobile destination; better yet, best Minnesota cities. Just like potato chips, you just can’t pick one, so that’s why we’d like you to pick up to 3. We want you to answer the question: “Where is the best Minnesota Destination City,” and why? We will take the top 3 vote getters and, over the course of the next 3 issues of Minnesota Snowmobiling, we will have our crack staff of writers get the scoop on why you think it’s the best of the best. Maybe your city will be the one, or two, or three. So let the voting begin, and thanks in advance from all of us at Minnesota Snowmobiling. To submit your response, contact the editor by December 10th at Oliver1650@icloud.com

2024 Snowmobile Trail Grooming Equipment and Training

Donations may be sent payable to MSEAF at 7040 Lakeland Ave. N. #212, Brooklyn Park, MN 55428. With a donation or sponsorship, you will be recognized at the event, in our publication and on our web site. All funds designated “Veterans Ride” will be segregated for that purpose only.

p o h s k r Fall Wo Recap

by Scott Wakefield Wow! What a great Fall Workshop we all had and hats off to region 6 for hosting. Way to go Tim and all his great volunteers. Tim spent a lot of time putting the fall workshop together and it really showed in the choice of the Holiday Inn in Lakeville, first class amenities, excellent food, great vendor displays including groomers and a drag.

this issue. I opened the General Membership meeting like I normally do and asked for first-time attendees to stand, and we had quite a few that came. Thank you for attending first timers and I hope you will be back for more.

Friday started out with DNR Snowmobile Safety Instructor Training with Bruce Lawrence. It was great to see a packed room and safety training getting ramped back up after the COVID shutdown. Friday night included an Ice Breaker party, with drinks and food and lots of comradery and discussion on how the weekend was going to play out with all the fun activities Tim and Region 6 had planned for us. Saturday started out with a Legislative/Trails meeting quickly followed up by the General Membership annual meeting. Those going on the off-site needed to leave at 9:45 so we moved elections up so everyone in attendance could vote. Ultimately, those elected were done by white ballot. Information on the new Executive Board can be found in 12

The off-site winery trip was a big hit.

Minnesota Snowmobiling

After a lunch on your own, the first workshops started, with Grant Writing the Dos and Don’ts by DNR Snowmobile Coordinator Wade Miller. If your club is short of funds, and looking for additional monies to complete a task, grants can be a good source of income for your club. Another option for attendees was a family fun youth-oriented presentation by Christina Davies on how to manage to go snowmobiling with a family of 6 out on the trail and over a weekend getaway. Getting kids started young and keeping them interested is the most important thing we can do to keep this sport going into the future; thanks Christina! Next up was First Aid, what to do if in an Accident by Mike Meyer of the Lakeville Fire Department. First Aid is one of the best things you can learn to be safe on the trail; having a kit is vitally important; and knowing the basics of CPR can save a life. Great session. Also available at the same time was Snowmobile Maintenance by Mike of DRH, and by doing the basic things can keep you from having a breakdown, and getting into a situation where you need to be rescued or first aid in the first place. Each Fall issue we would like to have an article on basic pre-season maintenance and the follow-up on what to do after the season is over; again a great presentation on a timing subject. continued on next page »

The DNR’s Wade Miller’s workshop topic,

Mike Dimmick of DRH Specialty in Hastings and his workshop topic Snowmobile Maintenance was a timely topic.

have our static digital billboards in Elk River on 169, 371 in Baxter and 1-94 in Albertville. We will discuss more about Scotty’s Safety Committee in our January Issue of Minnesota Snowmobiling including fatalities for the 2022-2023 snowmobile season and other items of interest as it relates to safety. Lastly, and saving the best for last, I facilitated a presentation by Kim Rapp, who was unable to attend, regarding Trail Maintenance and Signage as a “best practices “examples of how to sign correctly on the trail system including distance between signage, and the types of signs. More importantly, we will use this opportunity to gather email addresses of trail administrators so we can create a “group” email for those issues or opportunities of interest for the group. For example, a club has a groomer for sale and a club is looking to purchase one. That can be exchanged thru the “group”; or a club needs diamonds, and a club has an excess of diamonds and needs stop aheads. A trade can take place thru the “group”. If you want to be added to the “group” email list, contact Kelly at the MnUSA office and let her know you want to be added to the Trail Administrators Group email list.

Scotty Harder, Safety Committee Chairman conducting his Safety Meeting Saturday afternoon.

Saturday night concluded with an extended happy hour and a chance to reflect on the day’s events. A pre-recorded presentation by Representative Angie Craig, was played welcoming all attendees to the Fall Workshop; local Minnesota Legislator Jon Koznick was in attendance, along with Lakeville Mayor Luke Helier who gave a great

Up next was Polaris Ride Command, with Kyler McLachlan giving you the latest and greatest that Polaris Ride Command has to offer. The most important thing is that DNR trumps Ride Command and others, so clubs get the correct information to the DNR. The other organizations, i.e., Ride Command, Garmin, and such, pull from that. Also at the same time was a riveting presentation on Safety, by Richie Jacoby - Packing for the Unexpected, You Just Never Know - about him and his other 5 riding buddies having to hunker down in a storm and ride it out. We will cover more on this presentation in our safety issue in January and you won’t want to miss the exciting end to that adventure and the lasting effects on those that survived it! Also, as part of the afternoon workshops, was the Safety Committee meeting headed up by new Chairperson Scotty Harder, which started off with the great news that Scotty has negotiated with Clear Channel Outdoors for 5 electronic billboards on a BTA (Best Time Available) rotation, spreading our safety messages that we want. That’s right; we have the option to make our words seen by thousands of motorists driving the 7-county metro area for the grand amount of zero dollars and zero cents, as part of the public service message requirement by Clear Channel. So if you want to provide input on the wording for those 5 rotating billboards, contact Scotty Harder at 612-860-0606 or sharder67@msn.com . In addition to the free rotating electronic billboards, we will still

welcoming speech and information on how fast the city of Lakeville is growing. The evening concluded with a presentation by one of the “3 Old Guys” Rob Hallstrom and his daughter Kasie. Kasie is the one who really make the “3 Old Guys” the world wide sensation they are by posting their adventure on Facebook for the whole world to view and follow. What a great way to expose the world to the sport of snowmobiling and the best yet to come is ….they are not done doing adventures so look for the announcement of where the “3 Old Guys” are going next.

The Model Year 2024 reinvents riding, one sled at a time.

The weekend concluded with the Directors’ meeting on Sunday where there were many great discussions at length on the future of MnUSA and how it will look going forward. Way to go Region 6 for hosting a great Fall Workshop. Job well done!

3 Old Guys

Rob Hallstrom from the “3 Old Guys” was the keynote speaker at the 2023 MnUSA Fall Workshop. Rob shared tales from the “3 Old Guys” quest to snowmobile from Grand Rapids, Minnesota to Fairbanks, Alaska. Rob, 65, joined longtime friends, Rex Hibbert, 70, and Paul Dick, 72, on a 39-day snowmobiling adventure that began on March 6, 2023 and covered nearly 5,000 miles. Hallstrom’s humorful presentation led the large crowd to a standing ovation. Rob Hallstrom and daughter Kasie.

Along the way they became a nationwide social media sensation thanks to Rob’s daughter Kasie Plekkenpol and a group of close snowmobile industry enthusiasts.Traveling with GPS trackers coupled with brief texts from Hallstrom, Plekkenpol averaged 2-3 hours a day crafting engaging posts that grew their 3 Old Guys’ Facebook page to 39,000 followers. Deviations to the original plan.

They all drove Arctic Cat 8000 snowmobiles which they modified for the durability to tow the sleighs that were needed for this arduous journey. Using Google satellite imaging, Rob planned the routes needed to complete this trip. During the planning stages, he made several edits, and the first 1,000 miles went as planned. The rest of the trip not so much, as they survived losing trails in the rough Canadian terrain, fires in 2 of the 3 snowmobiles, numerous mechanical issues and even Hallstrom falling through the ice! Fortunately for the 3 Old Guys, most of their problems resulted in meeting some very memorable people. “People were so good to us” said Hallstrom as he recalled several stories of incredible generosity and welcoming from local residents. One example Hallstrom told was after a long day of riding, the 3 Old Guys arrived very late in Old Crow,

Yukon. They were told there were no rooms available. A lady overheard part of the conversation and when she learned they were the 3 Old Guys, she invited them to spend the night in her and her husband’s home. Because of the Facebook page she knew all about the 3 Old Guys. Near the end of the journey, Hibbert found a scale in one of the cabins they stayed in and when he weighed himself, he had lost 30 pounds. Hallstrom lost 20 pounds and Dick lost 10 pounds. The 39-day trip took its toll on both the men and their snowmobiles. Hallstrom said he was happy they took the trip and learned a lot from the adventure. He loved the natural beauty of the terrain especially the Mackenzie River, Canada’s longest river. He is open to another adventure and would like to include the other members of the 3 Old Guys. We are all looking forward to their next epic journey.

Milestones Michael “Bones” Loida, 58

Brandon Chase (left) with his dear friend and riding partner Mike “Bones” Loida.

Michael “Bones” Loida passed on October 22nd, 2023 at 58 years young. Bones was instrumental in getting me into snowmobiling in the early ‘70s. We started out as kids riding around the streets of Stillwater, MN. We soon graduated to exploring the trails around the St Croix Valley. As the years went by, we purchased many new sleds and enjoyed years of riding together. I moved to Northern MN and we worked our way around the entire northern portion of the state with many days of backpack riding from Detroit Lakes to Thief River Falls, International Falls to Tofte and all points in between.

IT DOESN’T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS!

Bones was one of the best trail side repair artists I knew. He could fix a sled with a leatherman and a screwdriver to get us to the nearest town for proper repairs. Bones loved riding so much we would start planning trips long before the first flakes fell. He would work on getting his machine ready for the trails and have it on the trailer ready to go by deer season. Learning on an Elan and upgrading to the first MX any of us had ever seen, with shocks up the side of the rear tunnel that were definitely spectacular in the day (bought new from Schelander and Shalene in Scandia, MN). Bones loved to get out and ride whenever conditions would permit, often being one of the first on the trail. He loved the fresh powder and a freshly groomed trail as well. He was happiest riding with me, my wife Sandy and our great friend Jake. He always loved the trail stops at club shelters and quickly made friends with whoever was there. He will be greatly missed by everyone that befriended him on the trails and elsewhere. I am writing this as a posthumous tribute to my best friend and riding partner who will be riding the trails with me forever in memory. He graciously left his beloved Arctic Cat to me for my grandchildren to ride, and we will all ride with him in our thoughts. Until we meet again, rest in peace Bones. Brandon Chase

HOW TO LOSE

Our Snowmobile Trails MnUSA Legislative/ Trails Committee, Terry Hutchinson, Chairman • Help us to “Protect our Trails”

LOUD PIPES

TRESPASS Q: If I see an open field while operating my snowmobile on a grant-in-aid trail or when operating in a road rightof-way can I ride on it? A: NO!! Operating a snowmobile on private property without permission is trespassing period in the Metro area. Just because the property isn’t posted doesn’t mean you have a right to enter someone else’s property through out Minnesota Q: If there are already tracks on it does that mean it is okay to ride there? A: No, that means you will be the second person violating the law. Trespassing is a misdemeanor or a gross misdemeanor, or you may be charged with a civil penalty. Misdemeanor is punishable by fines up to $1000.00. Civil penalties range from$250.00 up to $1,000.00 and loss of your registration. More than 60% of our Grant-in-aid trails are on private property and over twenty two thousand miles are installed and maintained by our Grant-In-Aid club volunteers. Our clubs around Minnesota are losing trails or need to reroute trails due to the actions of a lot of our snowmobilers violating our snowmobile laws and riding off trail. We all must inform other snowmobilers when you see them riding off trail or Right-of-Way, that it is illegal. There are thousands of newer snowmobilers without any clue that laws exist and the bad apples in our own group that are going to cause us to lose our places to ride.

Minnesota Administrative Rules: 6100.5700 REQUIRED EQUIPMENT “Subp.5. Mufflers A. No person shall operate a snowmobile unless it is equipped with a muffler as required by law and these rules, except that snowmobiles may be operated in organized events as authorized by Minnesota Statutes, section 84.871 without such a muffler. D. No snowmobile manufactured after April 1, 1975, except a snowmobile designed for competition purposes only, shall be sold, offered for sale, or operated in Minnesota unless it is so equipped and has been certified by the manufacturer to confirm to a sound level limitation of not more than 78 decibels on the A scale at 50 feet as originally equipped. G. Except for organized events as authorized by Minnesota Statutes, section 84.871, no snowmobile shall be modified by any person in any manner that shall amplify or otherwise increase total noise level above that emitted by the snowmobile as originally equipped, regardless of date of manufacture.” So loud pipes do not save lives, they are killing our trails. Our landowners are sick and tired of you and your loud pipes, and are telling us to remove you and our snowmobile trails from their property. If you can find an aftermarket company selling modified exhaust systems with a certification by the “Snowmobile Safety Certification Committee” that it complies with Minnesota Statutes and has a label conspicuously attached to it, then buy it. Otherwise stop buying illegal equipment, and remove your existing loud pipe without it.

Adventure starts here.

Jaylynn Frandrup SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT

MnUSA scholarship recipient Jaylynn Frandrup graduated from Hastings High School in Hastings, MN in June 2020. She is attending South Dakota State University studying Agriculture Business. Jaylynn is an active member of the Hastings Snomos. She is the daughter of Jay and Janet Frandrup and is the recipient of a $1000 scholarship. The MnUSA scholarship program will be continued in 2024. Application forms will be available on MnUSA”s website under Programs. Jaylynn, “What would you do to educate and stop riders of all ages and experience levels from trespassing and to stay on the trails?” Growing up my parents taught me to respect the signs that are posted. If the sign said “stay on trail” I stayed on the trail or if the sign said “stay to the right” I stayed to the right. These signs were posted for a reason and they should be respected. You, as the driver, never know what is on the other side of the sign. These signs are meant to keep the snowmobiler safe along with the property that says no trespassing. Nowadays you are seeing more and more people not respecting these signs. It is time for people who are in snowmobile clubs and who are snowmobilers in general to educate these people who apparently have no respect for posted signs.

I am a part of the Hastings Snomos Club in Hastings, Minnesota where every year they host a snowmobile safety class in December. This class is open to all ages and is a way for people to gain an understanding of snowmobile safety and have the opportunity to receive your snowmobile license. I received my snowmobile license at the youngest age that you are allowed to get it, but every year (if l can) I volunteer my time to help put together this class. This class involves presentations from the local fire department and the local DNR where they educate the individuals taking the class about the rules for riding on the trails and the dangers if not followed correctly. The final part of this class is the behind the wheel portion on a snowmobile where the individual abides with the trail signs posted in our test track and if passed, they are approved of getting their license. These classes put on by local snowmobile clubs are the first step in educating people about trail safety and how to respect the trails. It is also another way for people in the community to see the local snowmobile club members and how they

interact as a family. It might be the start for some people to want to join a club because there is a social aspect about a snowmobile club you do not find in an everyday community. For example, I was raised and brought up in my snowmobile club. I see them as my family members and am excited every time the snow hits the ground because I know I will be able to see these “family members” again. The local snowmobile club is the heart of Minnesota snowmobiling. Without them the trails would not be put in and maintained. For the younger generation, joining a snowmobile club is like riding a vintage sled, it is seen as not cool. The younger generation likes newer, shinier things that grabs their attention. For a snowmobile club to survive, it needs to update and upgrade like any kind of snowmobile so that it is able to pull in new “customers.” To do that the younger generation that was born into these clubs needs to step up and voice ways to get more younger people in these clubs. At the same time, the older generation that has been in these clubs all their lives need to hear these younger individuals and not shut down their ideas the second they are voiced. It might be scary for these older individuals to pass on the torch, but it needs to be done if

Youth News they want to see the snowmobile club survive and to get more people to understand why they should respect trail signs. From getting a snowmobile license to wanting to join a snowmobile club from this experience, there are ways to grow a club and to get a better understanding of the trail systems. You can create high tech apps that will help direct people on the trails better or you can post a bunch more signs in no trespassing, but not matter what you do, you can not always stop a person from trespassing if they want to. The first step to try and solve this problem is to educate, evaluate, and inform people about why trails are important and why they should

care. No one wants to see the snowmobile trails be taken away, once you educate people about why you should stay on the trails. They would start respecting the trails themselves and they would also educate others on trail etiquette. This task seems unreachable in the big picture, but once you start breaking down the parts and understand the goal of each one, you start seeing how it all fits together. To condense this whole goal it all starts with the snowmobile club hosting a day for the public to get to meet the club and how they interact. This can be achieved by hosting a snowmobile safety training day, going to community parades, or hosting a vintage snowmobile show. Hopefully from interacting with the community, the club would be able to gain interest from people who are wanting to join the club. Then, once they are in the club those new members start seeing the hard work that it takes to find trails and maintain them. Throughout the years, these new members will get educated on snowmobile safety, trail maintenance, and the reason why we respect our local trails. Finally, those new members will help with this cycle and start informing people in their life who snowmobile to “stay on the trails!”

Cowabunga dude!, no duh, it’s going to be totally awesome, and radical fer sure on Friday, January 26th-January 27th, 2024 at the ultimate ‘80s party. It’s all happening at ERX Race Park, Elk River, Minnesota, for the Midwest Vintage Snowmobile Shows, Midwest Ride-In, totally ‘80s weekend. That’s right, it’s gonna be so rad and bodacious, you won’t want to miss it. So, get out that ‘80s themed clothing and those ‘80s year sleds and have the most fun you can have on snow! The Midwest Ride-In crew has a ton of fun things for you to experience in this ‘80s themed year. Logistically, a brand-new entrance for the first time for this event; the Main Gate will be how you enter the event, divided into two lanes, spectator parking and swap trail ride lanes right off US Hwy 169. The ballroom will feature some of the best the ‘80s had to offer, and there will be a silent auction, and memorabilia for sale to boot! Outside, the massive swap meet continues, and the Kevin Leshe Memorial Trail Ride is on Friday with a bonfire right after, on the trail stop. Saturday kicks off with the Big Show, featured classes based on ‘80s themed sleds, along with the Jack Speckel Memorial Trail Ride. The swap meet continues, and make sure to bring your sled to get around some 500 acres of fun filled activity. Saturday night ends with the race on the snocross track, with live music in the chalet. So, mark your calendar for the most righteous party on the weekend of Friday, January 26th and Saturday, January 27th 2024.

VOYAGEURS NATIONAL PARK MINNESOTA TRAIL TOWNS: International Falls, Ash River, Ranier HIGHLIGHTS: Kettle Falls, Chain of Lakes Trail INFO: www.kabetogama.com, www.ashriver.com This is one of the Midwest’s premier snowmobile destinations—and deservedly so. Located along the Canadian border just east of International Falls, the park features four huge lakes (Rainy, Kabetogama, Sand Point and Namakan) where you can run for miles on groomed trails or in deep powder, passing countless islands on the way. The surrounding region boasts deep forests and plenty of trails, so you can easily spend three days here. The most memorable route is the legendary Chain of Lakes Trail, a one-way single track across part of the Kabetogama Peninsula. TRAIL TOWNS: Cornell, Jim Falls, Bloomer, Cadott, New Auburn, Stanley, Boyd HIGHLIGHTS: Old Abe Trail and its recreational bridge over Lake Wissota INFO: www.chippewasnowmobiletrails.com

CHIPPEWA COUNTY WISCONSIN

This region—easily accessible via Interstate 94 just north of Eau Claire—is a beautiful combination of rolling forest and agricultural land, overlaid with an extensive trail network. The Chippewa River bisects the county and the riding is excellent on both sides of the waterway. The great river is paralleled by the Old Abe Trail on its eastern side, a multi-use recreational route connecting the towns of Cornell, Jim Falls and Chippewa Falls. Interestingly, most of the snowmobile trails are not only numbered, but named as well—with colorful monikers like Rough Rider, Leaker, Crosscut, Rainbow, Buckhorn, Sunnyside and Budweiser!

INDIAN RIVER MICHIGAN

TRAIL TOWNS: Indian River, Cheboygan, Mackinaw City, Wolverine, Alanson, Pellston HIGHLIGHTS: Mullett Lake Trail, Mackinac Bridge, North Country Trail INFO: https://irchamber.com/things-to-do-indianriver-michigan/snowmobiling/ There’s great riding to be found on the northern tip of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula and Indian River is at the nexus of several major trails. North of town are large Burt Lake and Mullett Lake, as well as the famous Mullett Lake Trail (established after a 10-year legal battle) that runs along its western shore. That’s one of the two main routes northward to Lake Huron and the towns of Cheboygan and Mackinaw City, where an ice trail leads to Bois Blanc Island when conditions are suitable. At Mackinaw City, there are great views of the historic Mackinac Bridge.
