Design challenge: To design a Syracuse University, Interdisciplinary campus with the College of Visual & Performing arts and the School of Architecture. The building must act catalytically, engaging the students with the city resources and residents. Design Solution: The intrusion of a giant glass box as a gallery. By placing the performance/practice space in front and elevating it from street level, it allows pedestrians to view activity within the building easily. The purpose of the translucent window is to invite public eyes by vaguely revealing the interior scene. In order for them to enjoy a clear, unbostructed view of the interior space, they will have to enter the Highline At the neighbourhood scale, my building brings a new cultural element that all can enjoy, consequently, it markets the Highline and has potential to increase real estate prices and sales in the area. At the larger city scale, it generates a stronger presence of well cultured education and has potential to increase tourism. Hopefully it inspires the young to part-take in similar activities in the visual and performing arts.
