SULL Right Direction ET *x4200678 SULL Tina Class 0247 ET

In cattle, dominance comes in many formsshow careers, proven pedigrees and the pieces it can be built around. It’s not often they come all in one package, but this female of ours captures the essence of the word. SULL Tina is a Right Direction that we were lucky enough to slip out of Sullivan’s sale when we were still showing. Her career saw top five finishes in South Dakota and Minnesota; her time in the ring was capped off by being named Supreme Champion Female at the Minnesota State Fair. It’s easy to like cattle that are built so true and square in their rib cage and out through their hip. Her femininity lies in clean joints and the fact that she stays so elegant in her head and neck and smooth in her shoulder. That should honestly be enough, but if you need a little additional convincing just take a look at her lower skeleton - big feet, big legs and flexibility that is difficult to come by. We’ve hung her banners and pictures so that we can remember her later in life, and the memories sure are fond. Right now though, we want to give you this same opportunity with the offspring she will generate. She’s provided us a few successful flushes and because she’s young … we want you to capitalize too. After this though, we are gonna hold her genetics hostage. So, don’t miss your chance to rob the bank! The flush will be done by Westwood Embryo in Waverly, IA. Seller will pay for health papers and transportation costs to Waverly. Buyer pays all flushing costs and yardage. Seller guarantees 6 number 1 eggs. We would like the flush done prior to the 2017 breeding season.

Polled. Payweight is a balanced package with enough performance behind him to make the commercial guys smile and enough Star Baby style to work in a purebred herd. Millvale Pattern 3747, who appears on both sides of his pedigree, sired cattle with tremendous ADG. A group of his steers averaged over 4 pounds/day for the entire test period when fed out. For one segment they gained over 6 pounds/day during a miserable North Dakota winter. Payweight's mother has a perfect udder and great feet as a 10 year old. Payweight was Reserve Champion at the North Star Classic.

Polled. Classic Creole has been pick of the pasture since birth. He was born unassisted, at 68 pounds, to a first calf heifer and sired by the infamous, Creole 9590. With that definite herd sire look, Classic Creole is just what his name implies‌ "classic". His strong top ties into a smooth shoulder, that along with his low birth weight and a 1.1 BW EPD, make him the heifer bull that we all have been waiting for. Classic Creole has a striking profile, beautiful polled head, dark cherry red hair, and a clean sheath. Top Notch Classic Creole He is halter broke and ready to work for you. If Lynn were still here, this bull would be hitting the show circuit next year and wouldn’t be leaving the farm. Retaining in herd semen interest. THF, PHAF, and DSF by parentage. Collin Bakke started his herd while he was in high school with a handful of cows he (and his dad) bought from Willow Creek Stock Farm (Gene Robben). They used Homedale Replica as their herd bull. The next year he wanted to really "step it up" and found the bull to do it at Meadow Lake Shorthorns in Cornell, Wisconsin. The bull, Meadow Lake Pioneer, is a grandson of the Canadian National Champion, Saskvalley Pioneer 126P and his dam was Homedale Max Rosa 058, the $10,000 daughter of Saskvalley Bonanza. The bull has bred as expected and beyond. Collin has decided to invest in another venture and hence the reason for his dispersal. All cattle are vaccinated, poured, and the bred females are pregnancy checked. They are sound and in working condition. They should prove to be profitable for their new owners.

Her last go around gave us twin heifer calves, one of which we are retaining and another was shown by Amelia a little this summer, then went on to sell at the Great Shorthorn Revival (see picture). Her dam is still at Stangeland's and she is a 1998 model - what an impressive cow. Anyone who has been there in the last decade would remember this cow. What are EPDs?

from https://shorthorn.org/edp-faqs/

EPD stands for Expected Progeny Differences and are the expected differences in the performance of progeny when compared to other animals of the same breed whose EPDs where calculated in the same analysis. EPDs are calculated using different performance data from the individuals’ pedigree, progeny and individual performance. These EPDs are recalculated and updated twice a year (spring and fall). The actual value of the EPD is meant to be used on a comparative basis. For example, a sire with a +2.0 birth weight EPD will be expected to produce calves that are 2.0 pounds heavier on average than a sire with a 0.0 birth weight EPD. The American Shorthorn Association offers eleven different EPDs on animals recorded in their herd book in addition to calculating three $Value indexes. Calving Ease Direct (CED) – The most important EPD in sire selection for use on heifers. This value is expressed as a percent of unassisted births; the more positive number is more desirable. Birth Weight (BW) – an indicator of birth weight and calving ease. Larger BW EPDs typically, but not always, indicate more calving difficulty. Weaning Weight (WW) – an indicator of growth from birth to weaning measured from adjusted 205 day weights. Yearling Weight (YW) – an indicator of growth from birth to one year of age measured from adjusted 365 day weights. Milk (MK) – measured in pounds of calf attributed to milk at weaning. Total Maternal (TM) – a combination of weaning and milk EPDs this number expresses a cow’s ability to bring in a heavier calf at weaning.

Breed Averages CED BW WW YW Milk TM CEM

5 2.3 52 61 17 43 1

Calving Ease Maternal (CEM) – If planning to retain daughters from a particular bull then CEM is very important. The value is expressed as a percent of unassisted births; CEM reflects a bull’s ability to sire daughters who calve unassisted. The more positive number is more desirable.

Carcass Weight (CW) – expressed in pounds as a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Marbling Score (MB) – evaluation of intramuscular fat deposition in the ribeye as expressed in USDA numeric marbling scores. Higher values indicate genetics that are expected to marble and have a higher quality grade.

Breed Averages CW REA MB FT

Backfat (FT) – measured between the 12th and 13th ribs and expressed in inches.

8 -0.04 0.03 -0.04

Ribeye Area (REA) – expressed in units of square inches and offers genetic differences in muscularity at the 12th rib. Calving Ease Direct ($CEZ) – This index assumes a bull will only be mated to heifers, not cows. The potential profitability of the sire is measured by the incidence of live calves at birth. Moderate mature size is also emphasized in the index, but performance is not a priority.

Breed Averages $CEZ $BMI $F

19.00 109.00 51.00

British Maternal Index ($BMI) – This multi-trait selection index attempts to measure a bull’s potential profitability when complimenting the British cow base (Angus, Red Angus, Hereford, etc.). Shorthorn females can likewise be gauged at adding value to British or British-composite bulls of other breeds. A balance of growth and carcass traits is desired with a strong maternal component aimed at optimum reproductive efficiency and cow longevity. Feedlot ($F) – $Feedlot places strong emphasis on growth and carcass traits. This multi-trait index assumes the sire will be mated to a mix of heifers and cows and attempts to measure profitability when progeny are sold on the fed market. On the female side, mature size should be monitored closely when selecting for $F.
