Carlyn Iverson, professional photographer, illustrator for more than 200 textbooks and publications The technique of using graphite and charcoal as you paint is unequaled for rendering detail and threedimensional form. Carlyn will explain the process, materials, and tools needed to create a work of art with carbon dust. You’ll be encouraged by the “tricks” she will show you as you learn how to capture the dimensions and textures of botanical specimens and create field sketches. For the “field” portion of the class, you’ll spend time in our warm, lush, blooming conservatory and green interior collections, using

colored pencils to sketch your impressions. Then you’ll return to the classroom and start practicing the magic of carbon-dust illustration. Pack a lunch (or purchase one in the café) so as not to waste a second. Hands on, all experience levels. Limit 20, Visitor Center $99 members/$115 non-members, includes Arboretum admission
