We’re proud to unveil the amazing collection of winners and their stories as part of the Best in Silicon Valley reader’s choice awards! As a first time editor of this section, I have learned so much about the people behind the businesses that make them so great and the stories about the places we all enjoy so much. Whether reading about how the Allied Arts Guild (voted best Silicon Valley landmark) was once part of “Rancho de las Pulgas” or how long it takes to make the dough at Tony and Alba’s (voted best pizza and Italian food), there are so many interesting facts that make this section your guide to the Silicon Valley’s best. So I invite you to read on and try new places, visit old favorites - because these pages will put stories behind the businesses you know, and introduce you to those you may not have heard of. Do you know what inspired the name of Black Watch (voted best dive bar)? Or, what about the story behind the secret recipe of the burnt almond cake at Dick’s Bakery (voted best bakery)? I even found out where the ivy-covered stone background at Mountain Winery (voted best place to hear live music) came from. There is just so much information tucked into this wonderful guide that comes to us all because of you (our readers) who took the time to vote, “Thank You!” Enjoy the year ahead and explore all the best places of Silicon Valley during your adventures. — Rowan Briggs

“I Can’t Live with Excruciating Foot And Leg Pain” Announcing A New High Tech Method For The Treatment of Peripheral Neuropathy and Type II Diabetes Symptoms... drug-free treatment for severe and constant foot and leg pain caused by neuropathy. I learned about this new non-surgical, painless leading edge treatment that was working wonders with severe and constant chronic pain patients. This includes pain caused by Neuropathy. It has the ability to quickly increase circulation to an area (much needed in neuropathy patients). It could reduce and/or eliminate pain in as little as a few treatments. I is and was changing the lives of patients with severe debilitating pain in offices across the nation.

“I can’t live with this excruciating foot and leg pain!” When you hear this from a patient it gets your attention. Typically, I get the worst of the worst pain patients but when I recently heard this exclamation, my attention was particularly peaked. Let’s call this patient Bob. Bob is 62 years old with neuropathy in his hands and feet. He had poorly controlled Type II Diabetes and his life was literally as he described it “a living hell.” Clearly he was coming to the end of his rope. The nerves in his legs and feet were damaged and he was in HORRIBLE CONSTANT PAIN

“I Can’t Sleep at Night!” He complained, “I can’t sleep at night because my legs feel like they are being eaten by little bugs or chewed on by small animals.” During the day, he could hardly walk and every step sent shooting pain like lightning from his toes, up his legs and almost up to his knees. He had numbness in his feet and couldn’t feel his feet very well and had terrible balance problems. He was worried he might fall and injure himself. He told me that he could not go on living with this constant, debilitating pain that had made every day a tragedy.

I had to help this man! I recently was fortunate enough to accidentally discover a new noninvasive,

Based on the research on this new type of technology and because of the almost immediate type of pain relief, I had to have one of these deep nerve treatments in my facility no matter what the cost. I invested and implemented this new treatment that utilizes a unique laser healing and pain relieving therapies. I traveled to another state and enrolled in extensive training. My staff and I witnessed some amazing reductions and eliminations of some of the worst pain syndromes I had ever seen… And it is FAST! After just a few minutes of treatment on patients with extreme and chronic pain of the worst kind, including neuropathy of the feet and legs, we had patients telling us how their pain levels had decreased and they were shocked. Some of them even had their pain alleviated after only one short treatment.

Using the latest, leading edge technologies, we offer non-invasive, non surgical, drug-free and painless neuropathy pain treatment. We help patients reduce or even eliminate their neuropathy pain using very specific and relaxing treatments of peripheral nerves. This includes a neurological assessment to find the underlying cause(s) of neuropathy pain. Here’s what some patients have said about the treatments: “I was on 14 medications and my doctors had told me I may N.S., Age 58 need to have my foot amputated. I hadn’t been able to wear shoes other than sandals for years because of my swollen and painful feet. After going through this program I’ve lost weight and my foot pain is gone. I can now wear normal shoes.

FREE 7-Point Leg and Foot Neuropathy Evaluation During your free evaluation, you will be receiving: -Foot and Leg Circulation -Nerve Sensitivity -Pain Fiber Receptors -Thermal Receptors -Pressure Receptors -Light Touch Sensitivity -Nutritional Sensitivities

Due to the huge response we have recently extended this offer and open extra days to handle all the people who need this specialized help.

” N.S., Age 58 “ I drove 120 miles to get this treatment because I had not been able to feel my feet for 15 years. I work on a farm and I would stumble and fall because I could not feel the ground under my feet. I’m getting older and I can’t afford to fall and break something. After the treatments, I was able to feel my feet and toes again. Now for the first time in over a decade I have feelings in my feet.“ M.H., Age 85

However, we have a very limited number of Free Evaluation times left, so call before they are gone! Once you’ve been evaluated with our very thorough Neuropathy Treatment Evaluation, we will know if you are a candidate for this new painless and effective Neuropathy Pain Relief Program.

We were able to reduce or even eliminate the worst kinds of neuropathy pain.

Allied Arts Guild Since 1929 the historic garden park has been the inspiring workplace for working artists. The clumps also make the lens hardened; this hardening of the human lens causes people to have difficulty seeing up close. This loss of ability to see up close is called presbyopia. The cloudy area in the human lens is called a cataract.

He was convinced to have cataract surgery performed by Dr. Randal Pham, founder of Aesthetic & Refractive Surgery Medical Center, after meeting Odine Wiens, who wore glasses since she was 5 years old. Odine Wiens who just retired from her 20year job as a child nutrition assistant at Ever green school district, had the procedure done by Dr. Pham more than one year ago. “My grandson asked me why I don’t wear glasses anymore?” said Odine

The human lens is like a camera lens. It helps focus light onto the retina, which is like the film of the camera. The human lens is made up of mostly water and protein. The protein lets light pass through and focus on the retina. As the eye ages the protein clumps together and starts to cloud a small area of the lens.

For years surgeons across the U.S. removed cataracts and implanted man-made lens to replace the natural lens. This procedure is called cataract surgery. “This is one of the safest procedures performed in the U.S. today,” said Dr. Pham. Each year millions of American undergo cataract surgeries across the U.S. Patients who undergo conventional cataract surgery still need to wear reading glasses after surgery. Because the Acrysof ReSTOR lens works like progressive glasses patients who have this lens can

perform most daily activities without any glasses. “To implant the Acrysof ReSTOR lens, however, requires very precise and skillful work,” said Dr. Pham. Because patients who undergo implantation of the Acrysof ReSTOR lens have high expectations they expect to be less dependent on glasses after the procedure, measurements made before the surgery and the surgery itself must be extremely accurate. The natural lens of a normal eye stays in a clear sac called the capsule. To remove the cataract, the surgeon first makes an opening in the capsule. The surgeon then removes the cataract from the capsule using ultrasound. The surgeon must save the capsule in order to place a man-made lens inside the capsule. If the capsule is broken during the procedure and there is a large tear in the capsule the substance that normally stays behind the capsule moves forward. This substance is called vitreous. When this happens, the surgeon can not place the man-made lens inside the capsule where the natural lens normally sits; the surgeon may place a different type of lens either in the corner between the iris and the capsule or in front of the iris. These lenses are called sulcus-fixated if they are placed in the corner between

the iris and the capsule. If they are placed in front of the iris they are called anterior chamber lenses. When sulcus-fixated or anterior chamber lenses are used because their locations are not where the natural lens sits, the resulted power of the eye may differ from the calculated power which was measured before the surgery with the natural lens sitting inside the capsule. This difference in the calculated power and the resulted power may cause patients to require glasses or contact lenses after surgery. Ashley Stice, representative of Alcon Inc., the manufacturer of the Acrysof ReSTOR lens, confirms that of more than 150 Acrysof ReSTOR lenses implanted by Dr. Randal Pham, there has been no conversion to sulcus-fixated lens or anterior chamber lens implanted. “It is of utmost importance that you choose the right surgeon for this procedure,” said Odine Wiens. Ben Murach agreed: “You only have two eyes; for a procedure that requires exceptional skills and knowledge of refractive surgery I did extensive research to find a surgeon who is competent in both lasik and cataract surgeries.”

*An independent study found 85% of patients who received the Acrysof ReSTOR intraocular lens never had to wear glasses. Mrs. Odine Wiens and Mr. Ben Murach are actual patients of Dr. Randal Pham. Neither of them receives any monetary compensation for their testimonials. This ad was reviewed and approved by the Medical Board of California.

Inspired by family recipes like the Greek Lemon Soup and its staff family recipes like Chilaquiles and Chorizo Scramble, Bill’s Café serves all the classic breakfast items until closing time but be warned because it will be hard to decide among the variety of “Benedictions” (Eggs Benedict), omelets, scrambles, and the griddle specialties like Bill’s Bread Pudding French Toast. Of course you can find lunch specials like Bill’s Steak Sandwich, the Greek Gyro or classic Monte Cristo and French Dip as well as salads, homemade soup and beef, chicken breast or ground turkey burgers. “Chill out at Bill’s Café” with traditional Bloody Marys, Mimosas and Bill’s specialty drinks. Latino Grocery Store

Chavez Supermarket Catering to the needs of the Hispanic community and the taste buds of South Bay residents for about 40 years, Chavez Supermarket continues to be the favorite Latino grocery store in the South Bay. David Chavez immigrated to the Bay Area from Michoacan, Mexico and open his first supermarket in Redwood City in 1984. His customers come for the groceries and fresh cuts of meat, but also for the delicious home-style Mexican food served in the store’s Tacquerias with the popular Menudo served every Saturday and Sunday. Dinein, take-out or have your next event catered by them. Chavez Supermarket also owns and operates its own Tortilla Factory in addition to it own bakery. Farmers Market

Campbell Farmers Market Sunday mornings are the ideal time to stroll through the historic downtown Campbell and shop for the season’s best fruits, vegetables, freshly baked goods, locally caught fish, gorgeous seasonal flowers and local handcrafts. A member of the Urban Village Farmers Market Association for the past 14 years, the Campbell Farmers’ Market is a fun place for families and friends to gather, shop and listen to live music. It’s the size of the market that makes it so special, says Bianca Pardini of the Urban Village Farmers Market Association. Add a great community that continues to support their local farmers, food vendors and artisans year after year and you have a hit, she adds. “They (the residents) know the importance of eating locally grown food (and) new and unique additions to the market, like Manresa Bread Project and Philosopher’s Stoneground Almond Butter, help keep this market current and our customers happy,” she says. Customers are always encouraged to bring their own reusable bags or baskets to market.

Orchard Supply Hardware It’s no wonder Orchard Supply Hardware is voted best in this category in Silicon Valley because it was born here and has been the “neighborhood” hardware store since 1931 when a group of 30 farmers created the purchasing cooperative. Stocked with pails, orchard ladders, sprays, fertilizers and other farm supplies, the first located for OSH was on Bassett Street in San Jose. Nonfarmers soon came to shop and ask for advise. The customer service and knowledgeable employees still attract customers today who shop at the 71 stores throughout California and the two stores in Oregon. Dannicks, who’s five employees includes the second generation Downey set to continue his dad’s legacy, said his passion for track racing led him to learning how to work on his own cars at a young age. Twenty-three years later, he continues to offer that expertise to his customers and will expand his business to include used car sales at Dannicks Auto Sales to service his customers even further.
