e would like to extend a warm welcome to all our 700 plus managers and players, their families and friends. Our annual Mini World Cup is now in its 30th year and each year the event continues to grow. Our Club has been committed to encouraging the growth of soccer within our community for over 40 years. The Club fields 53 schoolboy/girl soccer teams and plays its 11-a-side fixtures in Rosemount, Dundrum. Our small sided games are played in Deerpark and Stillorgan Heath.

Merrion Youths Football Club is a community based club which provides young people with the opportunity to participate in structured football in the local area. The Club encourages its players to play at the highest level possible recognising their skills and abilities. Our aim is to provide a facility where players from the age of five, can develop their skills and reach their full potential in a safe and professional environment The establishment of our partnership with UCD AFC has opened up huge opportunities for all of our members as we continue to move forward.

We are proud of our achievements and the contribution the Club has made, and continues to make, to our players, former players and to the local community. As a club we will continue to develop our potential and we look to the future with confidence and optimism.

MOUNT MERRION U12 PREMIER – A Season to Remember

T

he highly competitive U12 Premier League season kicked off in September, and our Mount Merrion girls were straight out of the blocks with 5 wins on the bounce, including a showpiece 3-2 victorious statement of intent away against Joeys.

There were days when we thought we were indeed watching Brazil - Joeys away, Dalkey away, Esker at home; but there were also days when sleeves were rolled up and we dug deep in the trenches - Dalkey at home, Esker away.

As the season reached the business end, injuries and circumstance conspired

against us and stretched the squad to its limits, but that’s when character really shone through. When heroes were needed, hands went up – a stand-in goalkeeper winning player of the matches, dogged do-or-die defense, midfielders and attackers running themselves into the ground for the greater good, leaving nothing on the pitch.

Player of match awards previously handed out like confetti to forwards and attacking midfielders, were suddenly going to the defenders and goalkeeper.

The league came down to the last match of the season, winner takes all, midweek

away to Esker. Team spirit and a never-say-die attitude clawed us back to 2-2 with 5 minutes left, and we pressed hard for the winner. Alas, Lady Luck had other ideas and an unlucky bounce of the ball went against us to steal the prize at the death.

The sense of pride on the sideline from parents and coaches in the sterling efforts of this outstanding group of girls that evening will long stay with us. As we step up now to 9-A-Side, we’ve always known we have the skills, but we’re sure now we have the character. Watch this space!

Player Pathways MOUNT MERRION F.C.

THE CLUB PHILOSOPHY

The club objective is to play football at the highest level possible, across every age group & across every league entered in to. The club will achieve this by utilising a style of football that is attacking & skilful in its nature. The club will continually endeavour to facilitate matching player’s talent with the appropriate level of challenge & participation.

A player centred approach will be employed by all coaches & managers. There will be a focus on performance & development rather than results. Players will be encouraged to make their own footballing decisions in an effort to increase learning. The club also recognises that fun & social inclusion is important for all teams regardless of league or ability.

LONG TERM PLAYER DEVELOPMENT PATHWAY Active Start Stage – Ages: 2, 3 & 4 Soccer contributes to the well-being of children by engaging them in the sport, while teaching them basic movement skills.

At this introductory level, the objective is to get moving, keep active & have fun, in a safe, low pressure, positive learning environment.

Fundamentals Stage – Ages: 5, 6, 7 & 8 At this stage, individual player development is paramount. Players at this stage are totally self-centred & the primary focus should be on individual, technical ball mastery.

Coaches should create a stimulating learning environment where the atmosphere is one of freedom and fun.” A “positive coaching” philosophy is vital at this stage.

Learning to train stage – Ages: 9, 10 & 11 The effect of the role-model is very important at this stage. Children begin to identify with famous players and successful teams, and they want to learn imaginative skills. Skill demonstration is very important, and the players learn best by “doing.”

Training to train stage – Ages: 12 & 13 Awareness of tactics within the game becomes an important facet of the learning process. Players tend to be self-critical and begin to question more, but they are also beginning to form a strong commitment to the team.

Training to compete stage – Ages: 14 & 15 Athletes who are now proficient at performing basic and soccer-specific skills are working to gain more game maturity as they learn to perform these skills under a variety of competitive conditions. Players must have a sound understanding of the game principles and concepts.

Training to win stage – Ages: 16+ The majority of the player’s social, physical, technical, tactical, and psychological qualities are now fully established, and the focus of training has shifted to optimisation of performance. The focus at this stage is on the maximisation of all capacities, in an effort to produce good people as well as good footballers.

Active for life: Retention & Recruitment stage – Ages: All The recruitment and retention of players, coaches, referees and administrators is key to the ongoing development & long term future of Mount Merrion Youth F. C.

standout year for this team as they completed a historic the U14A League and Cup double. Rock solid in defence marshalled by a top

young keeper, a hardworking midfield, and two outstanding strikers who between them netted more than 50 goals for the season in all competitions, this newly formed team took the league by storm.

The team has benefited greatly from the coaching of the Captain of SSE Airtricity

Under 17 League of Ireland team UCD AFC, Harry McEvoy, who has two younger sisters on the team.

Harry has brought a wealth of football experience into the set up in his first year coaching. Great credit is due to this fantastic group who have done the club proud.

I

t is during this Mini World Cup week we remember our former Chairperson and all round Mini World Cup volunteer, Celine Mc Cormack.

Celine was a wonderful person who brought focus, fairness and plenty of energy to the running of the Club. She was also a great believer in ensuring girl’s football was treated no differently to the boys and that legacy lives on in the Club today.

She was very involved for many years in the running of the Club at all levels particularly the Mini World Cup. Thousands of kids and parents in the wider community would have met or seen Celine and Pete giving a helping hand throughout the club. Her husband Pete, is still an active coach in the club.

Celine’s enduring memory and legacy will continue to live on not just within Mount Merrion Youths FC and the wider community but especially during our annual Mini World Cup week.

Our continued thoughts and prayers are with Celine’s family Pete, Colm, Ciara and Conor.

MMYFC/UCD Under 15 League of Ireland

W

ith the new underage National League season in full swing it’s a great opportunity to discuss the current partnership between UCD AFC and Mount Merrion Youths. The partnership currently see’s a UCD/MMYFC U15 National League team as the entry point to UCD AFC’s elite player pathway.

UCD AFC currently offer elite players the opportunity to combine their academic ambitions in conjunction with their development as elite level footballers while competing at the highest level nationally through a number of teams and scholarships. The aim of the partnership is to provide players currently playing for Mount Merrion Youths the opportunity to make the step up to compete within the U15 National League and with the aim to playing for UCD AFC long term.

My role at the U15 age group within the overall unique structure on offer is to identify and develop technically and tactically efficient players to be able to play for our U17, U19 and eventually the first team, while promoting a happy and healthy lifestyle. Players are introduced to strength and conditioning, given nutritional advice, offered

physio support and the opportunity to socialise within a professional environment. We also place an emphasis on each player developing key life skills in terms of their ability to time manage and organise their week as this is a vital aspect of balancing their studies along with their training, playing schedule and personal life.

We have devised seven key areas in order for each player to be successful, these are; technique under pressure of time and space, tactics in terms of game intelligence and awareness, athleticism and with a speed focus, decision making and

an ability to problem solve, be part of a team, lead a positive lifestyle with regards their nutrition and maintain good values by being an example to others.

This project is in the early stages and it will take time to see the full benefits, however with the support of both clubs we have an opportunity to provide a unique environment for players to develop both on and off the pitch.

Teams in Action Champions League prep for Liverpool FC from MMYFC – May 2017

O

n the back of incredible performances in our 7v7 games, Liverpool Manager, Jurgen Klopp requested the help of Conor Sheehan, and U10s Manager, David Sheehan, to advise Liverpool Football Club ahead of their big showdown with Real Madrid. The pair from Mount Merrion spent time with Jurgen and their club captain, Jordan Henderson ahead of the big showdown.

Under 10s and the UCD adventure – May 2017

n May 2017 the C1 U10 squad lined out to support UCD Vs Athlone Town. Great night with super football played at halftime. Many thanks to organizers from UCD and Mount Merrion for making it happen.

Un 9s Blitz – December 2017

M

ount Merrion hosted an U9s tournament to close off the 5-a-side small sided games in December 2017. The second hosting of the tournament saw teams from Terenure Rangers, Lakelands and three Mount Merrion squads compete over group and knockouts which saw Mount Merrion edge out Lakelands in the final.

The break between the group and the knockouts saw an exhibition of freestyle soccer tricks by our very own Malachy Crann and the event was attended by the FAI who handed out freestyle footballs to all the teams.
