An act of heroism comes alive when it inspires bravery in us. Serbs, Croats, Muslims and Christians all live in the city. When the baker’s shop is shelled, a musician from the concert hall plays a music prayer for peace, alone at the same time every day for 22 days, one day for each of the victims. The voice of defiance of ‘The Cellist of Sarajevo’ inspired this book and the accompanying song Streets of Sarajevo, named one of the 100 Essential Folksongs by Folk Alley.

An Ordinary Story Written and illustrated by Shih-Yu Lin Publication:July 2018 Hardback 297 x 210mm / £11.99 32pp Full colour illustrations ISBN: 978-1-909991-80-4 Ages: 3+ Rights available: World Shih-Yu Lin is a brilliantly engaging new illustrator from Taiwan who studied at the Cambridge School of Art. This is his first picture book.

It’s just another ordinary day for villagers and fisherman. Shopping, fishing … But sometimes the ordinary becomes extraordinary and even dull days can take an unexpected turn!

Between making her nest in Spring and leaving her colony in Autumn, a bumblebee queen pollinates plants, builds wax honey-pots and lays eggs to produce future queens, male drones and all the workers who make honey. This lyrical account introduces young readers to a complex, fascinating creature and suggest simple and practical ways to encourage bees, whose numbers are in dramatic decline. Dubbin and Todd are at the seaside! Dubbin has his skateboard and Todd’s got a blue ball. As they roll along to the pier – disaster! The ball flies over the wall and then Todd disappears. It’s Dubbin to the rescue! A delightful follow-up to the first Dog on Wheels.

Komodo Jones and the Uncracked Code When your world needs a hero, but you don’t have superpowers, where do you start? The COSMIC comic shop and adjoining Café are about to close down. The only thing that could save them is a rare first edition, hand-drawn comic, that’s worth tons of money. But it has been stolen from its display case! Inspired by their favourite comic super hero, Komodo Jones, and a lifetime of comic book knowledge, can the two friends, Zac and Coco, pick up some much-needed sleuthing skills in time to save COSMIC? The race is on. Every hero has a life changing moment: a discovery, followed by a challenge. If you ask Coco about hers, she might say it was the day of the theft. But for Zac it came later ...

It is August 1711 and Annie is boarding the East India ship, Zuytdorp, sailing to a new life in Java with her parents and their servant, May. Annie’s hopes for the future quickly dissolves as disease, death and intrigue take over the ship. In the face of tragedy Annie shows grit and heroism and finds her only solace in a growing friendship with the one person she can trust – a young midshipman. When a violent storm appears on the horizon, their struggle really begins. A fast paced story of resilience against impossible odds, of courage and of love.

Sixteen-year-old Lizzie is dazzled by the Suffragettes and their daring Votes for Women campaign. As she follows them into unexpected danger, Lizzie also faces a terrifying battle of her own, against a violent and abusive father. Does she dare defy him? And how – with deeds or words?

Miriam Halahmy writes novels, short stories and poetry many of which have been included in anthologies, read on the radio and performed on stage. Miriam has been married into an Iraqi family for over thirty years and their stories provided much of the inspiration for Hidden. She has worked with refugees and asylum seekers in schools as well as leading workshops for English PEN and the Medical Foundation for the Victims of Torture. She has written an educational resource on child asylum seekers. An active participant in promoting peace and dialogue across divided communities, Miriam believes in standing up to any injustice, however small.

Savita Kalhan was born in India but moved to UK when she was very young. She graduated with a joint honours degree in Politic and Philosophy from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth. She was a Batik artist and teacher before she turned to writing. Her debut novel The Long Weekend is described as ‘an intensely compelling thriller’ which addresses the issue of stranger danger. Her recent books include Stories from the Edge (a YA Anthology) and Even Birds are Chained to the Sky. Savita lives in London.

Alix lives near the beach on Hayling Island. It is a quiet backwater, far removed from world events. One cold day in winter while they are walking on the beach, Alix and her school mate Samir pull a drowning man out of the freezing sea. He turns out to be an illegal immigrant, and he’s desperate not to be found and deported. Faced with the most difficult decision of their lives, what will Alix and Samir do and who can they trust?

Jay’s creative writing exercise is to write a fairy tale, to end with ‘they lived happily ever after’. But the way her life is panning out she’s not sure it will ever reach that stage. She and her mother are moving in with distant relatives, and they have super strict rules for girls. Jay is expected to have only Indian friends, if she has any at all. How can she see her school friends, Chloe and Matt?

Hidden deals with prejudice, judgement, courage and the difficulty of sorting right from wrong in a complex world.

But this is only the beginning of a nightmare for Jay. When her life implodes, how can she hide the shame – and how will she find a way to keep going?

‘A gripping story focusing on an agonizingly difficult contemporary problem’ NICHOLAS TUCKER

The Girl in the Broken Mirror is ultimately about hope and understanding, and where help can be found – even in the darkest situation.

‘Hidden is a terrific story. Miriam has managed that rare thing: a serious story told with a comic and emotional touch’ ANNE CASSIDY 8

Philip Womack’s fantasy trilogy The Darkening Path takes as its starting point Browning’s poem Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came and sends two children, Simon and Flora, on a quest to find and save their siblings, who have been snatched away by the terrifying Broken King. In the first episode, the children are chased through our world by the sinister Knight of the Swan. In the second, they find themselves in the strange land of the Broken King. Now in the third and final part, still in the world of the Broken King, Simon and Flora face one final challenge, but it’s their most difficult yet; fail, and everything in the kingdom will die. As they set off on their quest, there’s an extraordinary sense of comradeship and the world Womack creates rings with echoes of favourite myth and history: this is children’s fantasy of the highest order.

‘You’re thick, Peabrain’, says big sister Jessie. Daniel Kendal has the smallest brain in his family and the smallest brain in the world. He knows absolutely nothing about anything. So when an unfortunate mix-up propels him into representing his school in the National Brainiac Championships, he is convinced he is heading for total humiliation. Luckily the true genius, Gordon the Geek, is at hand to help him improve his brain power. But will it be enough to ensure Daniel avoids the title of National Brainiac Loser? The second laugh-out-loud book in the much acclaimed Help! series is funny and inventive with witty line drawings by Aaron Blecha.

Daniel feels he has nothing in common with his family. He takes his big sister at her word when she explains that the reason he looks different to the rest of his family is because he is actually an alien, adopted by her parents. When Daniel consults his friends Freddo and Gordon the Geek, they decide to do whatever it takes to return him to his alien home – with results nobody predicted! Eagle says there’s no such thing, Buffalo thinks it must be a bird, Hyena says it squeaked and wriggled when he gave it a poke and Giraffe finds it has toes. By now the Fluffalump is hungry and thirsty and when it is nipped on the bottom by Crocodile it trumpets loudly. And across the plain comes Elephant who dumps it in the lake for a wash and Fluffalump is revealed to be – a baby elephant!
