That’s why, even though it is not the hippest book store in the city, it’s still one of the most cherished. It may no longer be the first book store you think of or go to when you want to buy a book, but it’s still the first name that pops into your head when you think of ‘books’ and ‘Chennai’. In fact, it is stunning and overwhelming with its charming architecture and there are few buildings like it remaining in Chennai.

Since the old days of the British Raj, Higginbothams has been attracting bookworms and students of all ages with its collection of popular fiction, magazines, syllabus and technical books. In fact, metromela.com found that although Higginbothams may not have the best collection of fiction, it does boast the most comprehensive collection of syllabus and technical books on every subject from 12th grade math and science to software, journalism, hotel management and human resource management.

Higginbothams has a presence in the four southern states, and in Chennai it has branches at Anna Salai, Anna Nagar, and Taramani (at Tidel Park). It is also possibly the only bookstore chain in Chennai with branches in both the domestic and international airports as well as the Central Station.

K

Today, the Amalgamation Group of Companies has taken over to help it survive the competition. In an attempt to give business a fillip, they have started a scheme called ‘Dial-a-Book’ where you can buy books with a single phone call and have them delivered to your doorstep. They have also begun selling gift articles, greeting cards, soft toys and stationery items. Audio and `video CDs have also found their way into Higginbothams. Parking is the only problem at Higginbothams in Anna Salai because it is on the busiest road in Chennai (Mount Road). The fact that there is a service lane helps, though not significantly. On a crowded day, you’re still stuck. The other two Higginbothams in Chennai are smaller but do not

Dance is a great way to exercise! Learning and practicing any classical dance form can help you achieve a well-toned body and complete well-being. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS Always buy a bike according to your height and frame size. Also, there are different bikes for different purposes. So what’s good for regular commuting may not be right for mountain biking. Indian roads are not completely conducive to riding. So make sure you wear helmets. During mountain biking, wear elbow and knee guard to prevent injuries. Always wear gloves for a better grip to prevent sweating. Always carry an energy drink like Electron or even Glucose in case of dehydration. In case of BMX stunts make sure that you wear all kinds of safety gear. Always carry a hand pump that can easily be mounted on the bike in case of low air pressure.

If you’re biking in darkness, always have lights and reflectors on the front and the rear side of the bike.

Carry a super tool kit which has a Swiss Knife, screwdriver and panel set that could help in assembling the bike or even chain fixing in case of emergencies. During monsoons have a mudguard installed on the bike. Puncture kits can be carried as well with easy manual guides.

Pratham was initiated by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in 1994 in Mumbai. It started functioning in Mysore since May 2002. The organization’s mission is simple and clear – that every child is in school and learns well. DHABBA EXPRESS In the land of idli and sambar, this dhaba definitely has done something right to get so popular.

K

APRIL 2009

Dhabba Express carries a highway dhaba feel with the rustic décor and furniture. You can make yourself comfortable either on the bamboo and cane benches or the khatiyas (rope woven cots) in the courtyard kept cool by numerous shady trees. There’s also an air-conditioned seating area inside, if that’s what you prefer. And if it’s a party that you want to host, they have halls to serve that purpose too. Dhabba Express hands out a four page mini newspaper / tabloid instead of the menu. As an interesting conversation

.........hink Dhaba and the .......image of small highway .......food joints serving butter-loaded, delicious and homely food, comes up. Think Chennai and it’s idli sambar and filter coffee that make your tummy growl. But there are times when your taste buds need a change isn’t it? Well, it was on such a day that metromela.com visited Dhabba Express where we were told that Sachin who runs the show here takes abundant care in the flavor of the food he prepares; he ensures that he never uses readymade garam masala and instead grinds his own fresh masala every morning.

piece, it briefly explains the history of dhabas, Santa Banta jokes, some trivia and of course the menu. To ‘start up your engine’ they have Jal jeera pani, ginger mint punch, fresh lime soda and Punjabi Chhach. The ones you should really try out are Bhangra Pepsi and Malai Lassi. Picking the starters is easy as they are labeled as slightly spicy, medium spicy and very spicy. These range from Tandoori aloo and steamed momos to chicken drums and Punjabi chicken tikka. In the soup category you can choose from normal tomato soup, sweet corn

As desserts or ‘meethe sapne’ (sweet dreams) as they call it, Dhabba Express offers yummy, piping hot jalebis, gulab jamuns, cool matka kulfi and phirni. The water is served in small lotas (mini jugs) and papad and some salads are complimentary.

Express on Cenotaph Road is the most popular one it has branches in Nungambakkam, Greams Road, OMR, Besant Nagar, Anna Nagar and Kodambakkam. A meal for two could cost anywhere from Rs. 250 to Rs. 400. The vegetarian buffet lunch is priced at Rs.75 per head and is available only at Cenotaph Road and Nungambakkam branches. Dhabba Express is open from 11.30 AM to 3.30 PM and 6.30 PM to 11.30 PM.

-----------------------------------------------

In the main course, those who wish to try out authentic Punjabi fare should go for Makkai ki roti and sarson da saag. It’s delicious to say the least. Otherwise, there’s the regular Dal Makhani, Dum aloo kashmiri, bhindi masala, channa masala, kadai paneer, Punjabi kadhi, rajma masala and so on. The non-vegetarian gravies like Kashmir rogan josh, chicken changezi and kadai murg are popular tries too. We also spotted sea food and some Chinese on the menu.

Dhabba Express, we realized is the perfect place to have authentic Punjabi food punctuated with a soothing rustic ambience. The food is very economically priced, spicy and unlike the real dhaba food has less oil and butter to suit your health. When it comes to the buffet, there is plenty to choose from so pile up your plate with the ones you like.

-ndia's first adventurer on -National Geographic channel -(remember Croc Chronicles or Snake Wranglers?), wildlife expert and herpetologist Gerald ‘Gerry’ Martin has been wild at heart since the time he was a kid. He grew up in a farmhouse, surrounded by animals and nature and at 17 started assisting the legendary Romulus Whitaker at the Madras Crocodile Bank. In fact, he was the bank’s youngest curator. From watching 31 baby cobras hatch in his room during a project to looking for crocodiles on camera, Martin has done it all. Today he shares his love for adventure with children and educates them about nature and animals through camps and workshops. He tells metromela.com how parents can get city kids away from the TV and closer to nature and even shares some of his favorite outdoor destinations. Read on…

22

APRIL 2009

OUTDOOR TRIPS Parents can organize all kinds of outdoor trips, instead of just visits to a mall or movie theatre. Even a walk in Cubbon Park, a trip to Bannerghatta National Park, sitting by any of the new lakes, doing stuff in the garden, making bird boxes, bird feeders, etc., could make a huge difference to children. The outdoors need not be compartmentalized into something you see when you're out on a trip. When you do go on a trip, Bangalore is surrounded by beautiful and magnificent wilderness, forests and hills. Explore! Some areas around Bangalore could be great adventure trips for families with kids. I personally have a few favorites like Jungle Retreat in Masinagudi, Hunkal

Woods in Chikmagalur and Geedee Farms right here in Bannerghatta! If you are taking the kids out on a trek, remember that kids need small stretches in their activities. There's a fine line between adventure and misadventure. Ensuring that the end emotion is a positive one is imperative to the process of developing a strong interest and passion in children about the outdoors.

PETS AND INSECTS Kids are intrinsically allured by pets. All we need to do is to nurture that. If you have a pet at home, teach the kids to be responsible for it by example. If the pet brings joy to the parents, they need to share that with their children.

Gerry works with kids from the age of 9 to 16. His camps through Wishbone Interactive involve a structured introduction to nature and the wilderness, where city kids learn about survival, the dos and don'ts in the outdoors and get “hands-on experiences in nature and leave with a certain connect with the environment.” Activities involve tree climbing, trekking, camping, direction finding, birdwatching, among a host of others.

Kids are often scared of insects, reptiles and even lizards. In my experience, most fear is conditioned and comes from others around them - parents, friends and others. All we need is to keep our fears to ourselves and not transfer them on to our kids. For those who are already afraid, it helps to do things slowly short and gentle exposures to the animals that they fear. Building knowledge about the animals also helps a lot.

GARDENING Gardening is a great idea to help kids connect with nature. It builds a strong connect, gives children a feeling of accomplishment, develops a commitment to something alive and helps them stay away from the malls, bowling alleys and other decadent hang outs.

ENTERTAINMENT | VIZAG

DIVINE DINING The lounge dining experience is fast catching up in Vizag, thanks wholly to the trendsetter in city hotspots, Dusk.

Dusk is the new live entertainment lounge diner at the three-star Palm Beach Hotel & Resorts in Vizag. With earthy interiors done up by Ameet Mirpuri, this multi-cuisine loungestyle, 96-seater diner offers a sunken bar, a DJ console and a dining experience, which goes with dinner (only) and live music – strictly for couples and bachelors only.

---------usk can easily be mistaken for a contemporary ----------meditation center at Beach Road in Vizag. We see a ---------huge symbolic golden bronze logo of hands outstretched in repose over a circle, a cove kind of foyer that opens into artifacts, terracotta, potted palms and burnished wood; and an orange glow that seeps into almost everything. The décor and ambience at this happening lounge diner says it all. Dusk at the Palm Beach Hotel & Resorts on Beach Road in Vizag is indeed the coming of dusk, through and through.

Assistant Manager Rehman takes us on an enlightening tour. Stepping inside, Dusk opens into two sections with the sunken bar at the center. One section that’s narrower has a regular dining facility, while the other goes into lounge mode, full steam. The seating is predominantly cane, bamboo and wood (all imported from Bali). The burnt orange ‘throws’ on wide low seats, against a wooden center-stage low table that’s aglow with candlelight and soft streaming light from alcove beams, make for a perfect relaxed and leisurely romantic meal. The light reflects subtly on wine glasses placed chandelierstyle at the sunken bar, where a choice of fine wines and imported liquors are served. Service staff personnel glide around quietly in black uniforms bearing the Dusk gold emblazoned logo. A meal at Dusk is multi-cuisine (a blend of continental and Indian), a la carte and pre-plated. Dishes vary from salads (Rs. 135) to the main course (Rs. 185 to Rs. 295

Rehman highly recommends the Corn Sheek Kebabs (with plum sauce and yogurt), Pickled Mushroom Tikka (with a tangy chilly mustard yogurt dressing), Desi Garlic Prawns (with cream, garlic-lemon butter and mint), Fettuccine with Cheese Asparagus and Firangi Vegetables (mix of exotic veggies with flavored curry sauce and dill buttered rice and garlic naan), to name a few. The breads too are rather fancy (we love the spicy Focaccia Bread). Rehman states that since ‘presentation’ plays a big role at Dusk, the cuisine is served designer-like. So we’re not surprised to see a rather stylish skewer dish that’s meant to serve hot kebabs straight from the chef’s kitchen. It’s impressive and makes the kebabs look even more appetizing.

Dusk has also added an 'Indian homely' feel to its menu - it thoughtfully serves Dahi Bhath and Bisibele Bhath (both Rs. 145) as well (nice!). Desserts are exotic too - try either the Drunken Prunes (prunes soaked in red wine over a month) served with vanilla ice cream or the Caramel Chunk that's got a caramel sauce and nuts combo with ice cream. Dusk’s specialty (and a hot favorite) is the Swiss delicacy Chicken Fondue (Rs. 295), which comprises diced chicken with a mélange of melted cheese in white, and with paprika. MetroMela recommends Dusk for its delicious food, fine wines and divine décor. The ambience is perfect for a romantic meal. Parking space is available at the hotel’s parking lot. Dusk is open from 7.30 PM to 11.45 PM and a meal for two would cost between Rs. 800 and Rs. 1,200.

Handcrafted stationery at Deckle Edge Beautiful handcrafted stuff, pretty envelopes, small potlis, hardboard gift boxes, wall pieces and even wedding packaging

D

........eckle Edge isn’t a .........very well-advertised .........store. In fact, it has hardly paid attention to publicity. This shows, even in its location which is on the rear side of Srinivasa Towers (next to ITC Kakatiya Sheraton), away from the hustle and bustle that stores like these are usually associated with. Therefore, don’t expect any great interior display here. It is a fairly small shop which has so much stuffed within it that it sometimes gives you the warehouse feel.

125. Plain notebooks in different sizes are good things to pick up as well. The pages are handmade and the cover has beautiful kalamkari designs. Then there are gift tags, visiting cards (100 cards for Rs. 35; printing would cost more), scrolls (Rs. 15), potlis (small, round cloth baskets) and CD holders too. You can even take a look at the cane trays from Nagaland, lampshades (uniquely

designed, some even shaped like Chinese fans), hardboard gift boxes (triangular-shaped ones look pretty unique) and wall pieces (ceramic ones and even some made with dried spices and twigs) here. Deckle Edge also specializes in wedding cards and packaging. Ujwala Giri, who manages the show here, says that they can print about 100 cards within two days.

And for wedding packaging, just bring all the stuff that needs to be packed and they will do the needful. Deckle Edge has a workshop next door. It is difficult to recommend just a few products from the store, but the notebooks and the gift boxes did make a lasting impression on us. There are some great corporate gifting options too. The store is open from 10.30 AM to 7 PM (closed on Sundays) and parking space is adequate.

Deckle Edge

Started by Renu Rao, Deckle Edge (which means feathered edge of paper) deals in handcrafted stuff. Most of the products here are made of handmade paper (simple, silk and metallic) sourced from Vijayawada, Jaipur and the like. So you get to see a wide variety of paper bags (from Rs. 15 per bag) here, available in bright hues with embellishments ranging from kalamkari (hand-painted or block-printed cotton) prints to tissue.

Pretty envelopes cost Rs. 35 for two. Then there are organizers (Rs. 175) which can be used to hold pens, paper and even a diary. Files and folders are available too at about Rs.

Vani ensures that there is a good dose of literature thrown in as well with books by Roald Dahl, Ruskin Bond, Phillip Pullman and others. Your child (and you too) can become a member by paying an initial refundable deposit of Rs. 500 and a non-refundable registration fee of Rs. 100. What gives this library an extra edge are the several extracurricular activities they conduct for children. "All literary oriented k Vijayakumaran’s Theater ar tist Vive n stor y-telling sessio

with books as the backdrop," says Vani. For three to seven year olds, they have storytelling sessions. For kids aged eight and above, who have already started reading, there is an introduction to classics once a month. Vani gets an interesting mix of people to conduct all the sessions. For instance, Arka, a performer poet, has performed Sukumar Ray's Abol Tabol for children, well known RJ Darius has narrated from stories by Terry Pratchett and Kathalaya has conducted the storytelling sessions for the smaller kids, which are usually followed by a craft activity. In Vani's experience, most children have picked up the books and read them after sessions like these. Easy Library also conducts several interesting workshops for kids in summer, including a Book Buffet, where kids get to choose the books they want to read and even give a short review!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

C

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With over 6,000 books for children alone, there is a lot for kids (or the moms) to choose from. There's a big range of picture books and board books for toddlers, and a collection of the Clifford, Winnie the Pooh, Bubbles and other kiddie series. For older boys and girls there is a collection of mystery series like Nate The Great and humor like the Horrid Henry and Captain Underpants series. And if your little girl is already living in a fairy and fantasy world, there is the Olsen Twins, Tiara Club, Princess Diaries and other series.

If your child loves reading, then a membership here is a great gift. The best part is that you can select the books from the comfort of your home. Easy Library has every possible genre categorized meticulously on their website, including an enviable collection of Amar Chitra Katha. The reading programs for children are listed on their homepage and are a great way to inculcate a love for words in your kid. Parking space is available. Easy Library is open from 10 AM to 2 PM and 4 PM to 8 PM. It is closed on Wednesdays.

Meditation in Movement

An early morning class of health enthusiasts of all ages but mostly middle aged, swinging their arms in the air, slowly caressing a peacock’s tail, gently stretching an imaginary rubber band. They are all dressed in loose-fitting clothes, either a salwar bottom and T-shirt or track pants. They are moving slowly, steadily, calmly. All of them in their own meditative worlds, but watching their Sifu or Master. Tai Chi, this is.

Why practice Tai Chi According to George Thomas, it is great for the mind, body and soul. Tai Chi provides relief from stress-related disorders such as hypertension, backaches and other ailments; It improves the immunity and helps fight disease, strengthens the energy of the body and prevents negative elements from penetrating into the system. Tai Chi is also known to raise one’s awareness level and alertness, improve concentration and stamina and control short tempers. It also helps in strengthening the joints, ligaments and tendons, stretching the nerves and toning up the muscles.

--------------------------------------------

Tai Chi, the ancient Chinese martial art, involves graceful, meditative and light, natural movements which relaxes and stimulates different parts of the body. It is like meditation in movement with the constant interplay of two vital energies - the passive principle Yin and the active principle, Yang. This school follows the Yang family Tai Chi system. There are a total of five styles of Tai Chi of which this is the most popular.

------------------------------------------------------------------

What is Tai Chi

What’s the ideal age to learn Tai Chi There is no age bar to practice Tai Chi, Sifu George Thomas says. It is suitable for any person no matter their fitness level or the lack of it. If you can walk, you can do Tai Chi. No wonder some people call it the Chinese version of yoga.

THE ART AND SCIENCE OF WINES A celebration, a quiet romantic evening, a special business event or even a get-together at home – if it’s an alcoholic beverage that goes down well with any of the above, it’s the wine.

The Indian party scene is now accepting wine as a great way to enjoy an evening. However, the art of drinking and serving wine isn’t something that all of us are familiar with. MetroMela went on an odyssey to help know more about what wine’s got to do with health, what food it should be paired with, how should it be stored and more. And accompanying us on this odyssey was Chateau Indage, India’s largest and oldest wine company, established

in 1982. Chateau has vineyards spread over 2,500 hectares. Their range of wines including red, wine and sparkling wines have won several awards ranging from the International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC), held annually at London to Wine Style Asia from Singapore. The company also holds the honor of being listed in the world wine encyclopedia as the only Indian International wine. Here are the inputs from the expert.

it but you may live a longer, healthier life drinking it.

Pairing Food with Wine Wine shouldn't dominate the food or vice versa. They should complement each other. It is also important to remember that wine had alone tastes different than with food. White wine goes well with white meat, creamy pastas and salads while red wine goes with red meat. However, there is no hard and fast rule either. If you wish to enhance the taste of wine, have it with cheese (mainly used while tasting wine) which neutralizes the taste of food.

Drinking wine can rejuvenate you in more ways than one. Moderate consumption of red wine (read two glasses) reduces the risk of heart and brain disease, works against anxiety and tension and acts as a tranquilizer preventing coronary diseases, Alzheimer’s and some forms of cancer. As a part of normal diet, wine is a great energy booster that provides the body with substances that aid digestion. Wine cannot be called a medicine in the actual pharmaceutical terms, but it is comforting to know that not only can you enjoy

------------------------------------------------------------------

Hale and hearty with Wine

metromela.com

Nonetheless acids, tannins and sugars in the wine interact with food to create different tastes. Usually the wine grown in a particular region goes well with the typical food of that region. Therefore it’s a good match to combine Indian cuisine with Indian wines. Balance the method of preparation with the wine - like a poached fish will go along well with Chantilli Sauvignon Blanc (white wine), whereas a Murgh Makhani in rich gravy requires the heavier IVY white Zinfandel (rose wine). Try to match flavors, so when you taste cherries in the Chantelli Merlot (red wine), pair it with a duck served with a cherry sauce. APRIL 2009

Wine should never be sweeter than the dessert and vice versa, but a sparkling wine of high quality such as Madame de Pompadour (sparking wine, Indian champagne) will go along with most sweet finales. C

And as a last point remember that wines from the new world (including India) are fruitier and less complex compared with the earthy ones made in the old world. As a result wines from the new world are much easier to pair with any kind of food and

it’s usually possible to stay with one wine for the whole meal. The only thing to be kept in mind is that you pair high quality food with an equally high quality of wine.

The Right Way to Store Wine Wine should be stored in a dark (light makes the wine older), quiet (no agitation), smell neutral (no vegetables close by) place with a constant temperature. Humidity in the storage room should be at a high level (in connection with the temperature) as it guarantees that the wine is unable to rise out of the bottle. It’s a good idea to

38

APRIL 2009

store wines in horizontal position or in a 60° angle, as the wine covers the cork from inside and prevents it from drying out. When storing sparkling or fortified wines, many experts say that it is better to keep it upright though, as either the carbon dioxide gas or the high alcohol volume can damage the cork and as a result influence the wine quality negatively. There is no absolute golden rule with respect to temperature. But it’s around 4 degrees centigrade for sparkling wine and moves up to around 19 degrees centigrade for semidry red wines.

The Art of Serving Wine Choosing the right glass for wine is very important too. The right glassware acts as a simple serving utility, pleases the eye with design, shape and material and lastly supports the wine during the “performance” due to shape. White wine needs a small wine glass and red wine needs bigger. If you are into sparking

Sometimes the difference makes the charm. So a really hot dish like Kolhapuri chicken can go perfectly with the slight sweetness of an IVY-White Zinfandel (rose wine). Be careful of the spices you use as those also have enormous influence on the taste felt by the tongue. For example the bitterness in food increases the felt bitterness of tannic elements in red wine, whereas salt and sourness has exactly the opposite effect and increases the sweetness in wine.

expensive wines then wine flutes are the best. When buying any type of glass, focus on the rim. The rim should have a sharp cut, as this guarantees that the wine is well placed on the tongue. Well, who would have thought that there is so much science behind the art of serving, storing or just having wine…

Araku Valley is a perfect weekend getaway for Vizagites. Located amidst the Eastern Ghats at an elevation of approximately 2,992 feet, it is scenic, gloriously green and peaceful. You can either travel by train or by road to the valley. The train runs on a broad gauge railway line Kirandole, traveling onwards to Madhya Pradesh. Kirandole is said to be the highest broad gauge railway line in India, at about 3,400 feet. The train journey is breathtaking, through 46 tunnels; and it takes about three and a half hours from Vizag to reach the valley. On road, you get to drive through the myriad coffee plantations of the Ananthagiri Hills. If you have the time, you could also take a small diversion to visit the Borra Caves. The journey from Vizag city to Araku Valley, by road, takes about four hours. Although the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC) organizes a day-tour package to the Araku Valley, it is best to spend a night at the APTDC guest houses (either the Mayuri Hill Resort or the Haritha Valley Resort) if you would like to enjoy the ideal weekend break. The rooms have to be booked well in advance at the APTDC office at the RTC Complex in Vizag. The rooms are comfortable and the resorts also have in-house restaurants that offer decent meals. From a tourist point of view, you can either visit the Tribal Museum that’s located in the heart of the township at Araku Valley or take a stroll at the evening bazaar or get a glimpse of the Dhimsa tribal dance by a bonfire at night at the resorts which is organized by the APTDC management.

The Araku Valley is at its cool and misty best during December and January, so you would need to take along some light winter wear for the night. But it’s equally picturesque during the months of August and September, especially if you are the kind who relishes a drive through rain-soaked hills in bright green and through infant waterfalls that trickle alongside. It’s absolutely picture-perfect.

These restaurants have grown with the city. The typical dishes they serve range from the ever popular Murgh Tikka to the very delectable Murgh Malai Kebab, Tangdi Kebab and of course traditional favourites like the Shammi Kebab, Mutton Do Pyaza, Mutton Sheek kebab and Patthar Ka Gosht. Do not expect a large variety of seafood here, as only the fastest moving items served here are the best. The prices range from Rs. 80 to Rs. 160. Worth a try are Garden Restaurant on SD Road, Hotel Shadab on High Court Road, Paradise Restaurant in Secunderabad and Hotel Niagara in Chaderghat.

Hyderabad has grown exponentially and there has been a huge surge in the number of restaurants that serve kebabs. While some follow the fast-food culture, others offer fine dining facilities too. Some even offer Mediterranean, Lebanese and Arabic varieties of kebabs. So while there are evergreen favorites, there are even new varieties to sample like the Shawarma, Falafel, etc. The pricing here is modest and ranges from Rs. 60 to Rs. 100 for the chicken variety and Rs. 100 to Rs. 140 for the mutton variety. Popular ones among these are The Great Kebab Factory, Hyderabad House (multiple branches), Kababish

Food Court at Red Hills and Lakdi-ka-Pul and Four Seasons opposite RTO office in Toli Chowki.

The 5-Star Experience Five star hotels like the Taj Banjara has Kebab-e-Bahar, which is by far one of the best places for Kebabs in Hyderabad. They serve the popular fare with a Lucknowi touch in the form of Kakori kebabs and the ever-popular Barah Kebab. Since this is a five star restaurant, there is also a good selection of seafood from Tandoori fish to Fish Amritsari and the Tandoori Jhinga to choose from. The food has a distinct touch of the North. Then there is even Kebabs & Kurries (formerly Peshwari) at the ITC Kakatiya Sheraton. They serve some of the best Tandoori Raan in Hyderabad. Their lobster is one of the best in the country and so are their jumbo prawns. Apart from its specialties, they also serve some of the softest and most delectable Sheek kebabs (with a special crunchy buttery variety) and Murgh Malai kebabs. The prices, needless to say, are on the higher side.

Earlier the owner was a trader in books and therefore has a pretty good collection comprising self help books, biographies, cookery, erotica, fantasy, bestsellers, philosophy, fiction and non-fiction and a separate children’s section as well. The books are an amalgamation of work by Indian and international writers. We noticed that they have a collection of Marathi and Hindi

books of renowned writers as well as translated versions of popular English books here. Other than books, they have a unique pottery collection by artiste Asha Baste and lovely imprints of renowned artistes like Vincent Van Gogh adorning the walls. These could make excellent gift options. Diyas, candles and mugs are there too for sale. They also encourage upcoming artistes and are booked for art exhibitions as well. For instance, when we visited, they had paintings of Ashish Kate whose medium is shoe polish. waiters. Invariably, these are places that play great music (read rock) and have a certain ambience that lives up to Bangalore's original pub city image. The thumbs up goes to Tavern for its Eighties Rock and Happy Hours that go on till 8.15 PM and Pecos on Rest House Road (off Brigade Road). Pecos is legendary, despite the fact that it is dark, congested and the beer is often watered down. They play rock and some people swear by Pecos. Go check out the popcorn, chilli pork and posters to find out why. Guzzlers Inn has slightly more comfortable seating and tries the look of an English pub (they all do, don't they?). The music is classic rock and they have a pool parlor upstairs. Legends of Rock in Koramangala, Bangalore stays true to its name and plays rock and heavy metal music. are advised to sit on the cozier lower floor and watch rock bands play on a large screen. There is a cover charge on Saturday, though you can check before going. Take Five above Cafe Coffee Day in Indiranagar has posters of Jazz greats and plays good rock and jazz. They also serve good Belgian beers and a wider range of food than many other pubs. Purple Haze is as classic as rock itself and has pictures of legends like Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morisson on the walls. They play metal and rock both and used to be one of the most happening pubs to visit on weekends. They also have a Marathahalli outlet now but the haze still hasn't dimmed say regulars.

matkas, be sure to get there. The ambience with open-air seating on the terrace and remixes playing in the background makes for a fun outing. Hard Rock Cafe is a hotspot in Bangalore and plays rock on huge LCD screens. The cocktails are great and so is some of the burger-sandwich food. Makes for a pricey night out. Fuga is yet another happening and pricey spot on Wood Street. Dress trendy, whether you plan to sit in the lounge area or the bar. Their special nights come with a stiff cover charge. Kosmo near Cunningham Road is a lounge bar that also serves Tapas (Spanish style nibbles). It’s a good place to go for mood lighting and conversation. For more bonhomie and cheer, visit The 13th Floor which has an indoor and outdoor terrace section. Choose the terrace which offers a great view of Bangalore and is buzzing with music and conversation. The food is okay but you could always eat at Ebony next door later. Hint on the terrace of Bangalore Central is yet another similar and classy place. The Blue Bar (the bar has a blue tinge) with its gazebo style setting has some of the city’s hippest crowds thronging to it and the music is house and electronica. Weekends can be extremely crowded though. Another expensive place this one.

Chill out Time What do you do when your uncle comes to town and you need to take him to a place where he can relive the famous Bangalore pub scene he has heard so much about? Go to Pub World of course. One of the first pubs in the pub city, it has five different theme seatings. Now that smoking’s banned, you can even tag along the kids. This is where you can lounge on the pebble-strewn ground, hear some of Bangalore’s most talented musicians perform, drink your cocktails and order food that’s Goan. The kids can come along too.

Office talk A drink with colleagues post work can sometimes help break the ice and make you bond better. If at least over beer. Try Geoffrey's, which is a classic English style pub with stained glass and leather chairs. The seating is spread over two levels, though the bar or the alcoves are a good bet. The music is retro and it’s ideal for mid-budget outings. Firangi Paani at Forum is another favorite with the corporate crowd and aims at the same English theme. The music shifts between retro and rock. We also like TGIF for its good Happy Hour deals. The desserts are great too. To break the bank and have a team outing in style, head to i-Bar

or Dublin. I-Bar at The Park is as glamorous as they come with rich brocade cushions and Arabic style lights. Music veers between Bollywood, retro, rock and house. Watch out for DJ Hussain’s Shukrawar ki Raat on Friday nights. Dublin at Windsor Manor is for those who love the Irish Pub ambience. The beer at Rs. 400 for a mug of draught is steep, although the variety in beers is great. For a real classy evening, head to the Library Bar at The Leela. Plush leather sofas, chandeliers and gleaming wood cabinets makes it seem like something out of a grand English manor. You could also opt to sit in the garden like outdoor setting. Need we add, that it is expensive?

So if this guide has helped you decide which to pick tonight, log on to metromela.com for their contact details. Happy pubbing!

C

Want to take your date on a pubbing spree? Since conversation is important here, lounge bars high on the ambience factor and low on the lighting and music are ideal. Our vote goes to Vaayu Sky Lounge above Eva Mall, with its open-air comfy seating. Try the martinis here. Taika on Church Street is usually a great favorite with the girls and plays electronic dance music among others. It’s also got this calm, soothing, spa-type look which works well. Hypnos on Infantry Road comes with hookahs and a very Mediterranean-meets Arabic ambience. The blue and white seating is ideal to laze around and whisper sweet nothings into the ears of your date. The food is Middle Eastern and quite authentic. For romantic rendezvous also try Liquid, the stylish pub at Ista Hotel, with its gazebo style seating.

Simple, well-thought, safe and very child-friendly – Vanilla is a fun place for moms and kids.

First, the play gym. Over here, you have child-friendly, non-toxic trampolines, see saws, tunnels, and little mountains, all of them completely safe. Your child can do anything from run up and down foam steps, to rappelling, to rolling, bouncing and more. It’s great fun. Outside, in the play area, the ‘cars’ are non-battery-operated or motorized, which means the child has to navigate the car using their motor and coordination skills. The store stocks linen, some toys and books, as does the library, where you can buy books. At the massage center, things

At the café, the menu is simple and tasty, just as a child would like it. There’s pasta, sandwiches, juice and French fries apart from some wedges and cutlets. The prices too are reasonable as a meal for you and your child would work out to less than Rs. 200. The exercise classes upstairs are both for mother and child (and by child, we mean baby too), where the two are taught to discover their bodies. These are dance, aerobics, yoga and movement classes, which we are told are quite popular. As for prices, Vanilla charges Rs. 150 per child to use the facilities (the gym and the outside area) for an unlimited amount of time. The massages cost between Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,000.

Vanilla keeps conducting some fun sessions on special days like August 15, Halloween etc. So register with them to get the details. Apart from this you can conduct a birthday party there, which will work out to Rs. 400-Rs 500 a child (that includes the menu and the play-gym area). The place has ample parking space and it is open from 9.30 AM to 7 PM on weekdays and from 10.30 AM to 7 PM on Sundays.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So what does Vanilla have? It’s got a play gym for children, it’s got a Wi-Fi vegetarian café, it’s got an outdoor play area for children (where they can actually drive cars), it’s got a store, it’s got a library, it’s got a massage center, and it’s got exercise classes.

Loads of homework, tuitions and cut-throat competition – life for a child is no longer easy. Annapurna Emani, principal of a school in Vizag, shares her thoughts on the current day education system.

MY

CMY

APRIL 2009

metromela.com

The problems India’s educational system is at an age of cut-throat competition that lacks ‘application’ and focuses more on the quest to get the right ‘scores’. Consequently, the purpose of imparting knowledge to create ‘learned’ adults is being lost. Children are no longer encouraged to use their ability to absorb, think and retain what they have learnt. The answers are spoon-fed and the child memorizes them

-------------------------------------------------------------------

50

A principal of the Jassver English Medium School in Lawsons Bay Colony, Vizag since 2004, Annapurna Emani is backed by a rich 20-year stint in teaching at Timpany School. Having ‘lived and breathed’ education at close quarters, she shares her views with metromela.com on the present-day education system in India and provides (she modestly hopes is) an insight into what could maybe help in making the life of a student better.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

I

...f a good principal were ...to need a definition ...then we think Annapurna Emani would fit the bill, and rightly so! She’s the quintessential principal – attired in an ethnic cotton saree, bespectacled, soft-spoken and genteel; with twinkling eyes and a kind smile (makes us want to go back to school again); and an underlying subtle but steely resolve that shows the probability of surfacing as and when the need arises.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

K

mechanically, because at the end of the day the child has to get good marks in class. The parents (left with no choice) demand and the schools (left with little choice) provide the apparently ‘right’ kind of education that’s driven towards scoring the highest marks. Both are hapless against a socio-economic and political system that remains unmoved; and the poor child is forgotten, lost in this conflict.

So we need to think of students as ‘children’

Furthermore, a shift towards a change in the educational system can begin at the basic elementary level. Say, for instance, we have these simple examples where little ones are told to ‘write’ sentences pictorially and not repeatedly; and where they are encouraged to ‘experience’ the touch and ‘feel’ the color of a fruit rather than being told to tediously write the word ‘fruit’. In doing this, we would be sowing the seeds for a learning that’s ‘enjoyable’ and not a mundane ‘task’ to be completed. This would go a long way in nurturing healthy minds for a healthy nation.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Solutions, yes

first, and then take the healing process a step further. Make ‘lessons’ age-appropriate. As adults, there’s only so much that one can take in, so imagine the plight of a six-year-old child who’s been told to grasp large concepts. Teachers too can try to make learning interesting, by involving students either in live enactments (if it’s a lesson in English) or in a healthy debate (for say a class in History). Whenever feasible ease off the pressure because, alike adults, children are entitled to their moods. So give them that much-needed break in class once in a while.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

C

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today, children are constantly being bombarded with homework and endless tuition, and in order to face this kind of hammering, they ultimately ‘switch’ off and subconsciously start to lead the life of a zombie. Playtime too is virtually non-existent in their lives, and they end up losing out on a healthy childhood and so much more. Of course, there are exceptions and these, although just a handful, are heartening to see.

It’s a long haul, but there’s a beginning to be made somewhere, and MetroMela hopes that the wheel of relearning has already been set in motion, thanks to Annapurna Emani’s concerted efforts. For a complete review of Jassver School, browse through metromela.com.

Don’t think that fitness centers are meant only for youngsters to build muscles. They also help older people strengthen their muscles and maintain good physical health. Enroll in a fitness center and do work-out for minimum of 30 minutes so as to strengthen your bones and muscles. A comprehensive work-out at the fitness center will also keep your body mass in check. The equipment best suited for you are the treadmill, back press and hand press. A session of light aerobics also helps. Maintain a strict fitness schedule which includes morning walks, stretching and breathing exercises. If you have access to facilities, then make it a habit to play some sport like tennis, badminton, table tennis etc. Don’t strain your body too much. If you can buy a treadmill, do so to help you keep a check on heart ailments and to strengthen your joint muscles to avoid arthritis. Exercise your brain by solving puzzles or spending quality time reading newspapers. Set apart time for recreational activity to keep yourself stress-free. Practice yoga regularly because it helps you rejuvenate. Have a regular body massage by an expert because the oil used by them will enrich your skin and add an extra glow. Abstain from late nights, alcohol, smoking and drugs. Most importantly, maintain a balanced and healthy diet which can do wonders for your health and fitness.

At Xtreme Sports Bar, you shouldn't be surprised to see grown men and women behaving like college grads as they watch extreme sports unfold on the giant screens in front of them. When there's a commercial break, look around and soak in the

ambience. The coasters have smart lines like, “I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered”. The decor is casual. You could lounge on beanbags in sunny hues or stake your claim to a booth where the tables have insets of cars, bikes and sporty gear. On the food menu, the steaks and salads reign supreme. If you want variety, try the fried calamari, the fajitas or the pasta. The bar menu has a range of shooters, flamers, margaritas or fresh fruit martinis. Xtreme Sports Bar is open from 12 PM to 12 AM and serves Continental, Chinese & Indian Tandoori cuisine. We have an in-house DJ, playing Classic Rock and Retro music. Going with the requests of the customers and the popularity of the event, the sporting commentary is either left on or turned off. What’s good is that it is not too noisy either. You can talk and hear without having to shout above the din. Whatever your sport, round up your gang and come over. Experience the electrifying energy of a packed arena. Get transported into the heart of the action. Spur your heroes to victory at Xtreme. Getting High on Sports or Getting High with friends has never been the same.

THERE IS A NEED TO EDUCATE THEIR WILL, HELP THEM LEARN FOR LIFE AND FOCUS ON DEVELOPING ALL 8 FORMS OF INTELLIGENCE ( LOGICAL-MATHEMATICAL, VERBAL-LINGUISTIC, VISUAL-SPATIAL, BODILY-KINESTHETIC, INTRAPERSONAL, INTERPERSONAL, MUSICAL AND NATURALISTIC ) IN THEM.

K

B E C AU S E , E V E RY C H I L D I S I N N AT E LY G I F T E D At Diksha – A Waldorf School, we follow Rudolf Steiner’s pedagogy which balances academic, artistic and practical elements, educating the whole child: Head, Heart and Hands. At Diksha, learning is interdisciplinary, integrates practical, artistic, and intellectual elements, and is coordinated with “natural rhythms of everyday life”. At Diksha, teachers focus on developing each dimension of a child’s personality which leads to un-inhibited growth of the child and ensures each child fully utilizes his/her latent potential. Thereby, nurturing each child’s individual personality and facilitating them to meet their bright and unique destiny.

!

The approach has been termed "the most complete articulation of an evolutionary developmental K-12 curriculum and creative teaching methodology".
