Maidstone, Medway Magazine wants you to go mmm about all those things that help us to become the great people we are. Tom White takes a look at the remarkable career of Kelly Brook, the girl who grew up in a council house in Rochester... and now enjoys a million pound pad in Maidstone – and the adulation of millions around the world EARLY 20 years ago, cook Sandra Parsons had a point to prove. Like any mother, she was convinced her daughter was the most beautiful girl in the world – but Sandra knew there was something extra special about 13-year-old Kelly.

So she told husband, scaffolder Kenneth, that she was going to enrol their daughter in a beauty pageant, entering young Kelly into Medway Council's Carnival Princess competition.

The proud mum would not have realised it at the time, of course, but it was to be the first step on a path which would lead her

daughter to global fame, riches, and the admiration of millions; a world a very long way from the red-brick council house in which she grew up in Rochester.

But first she had to impress the judges and beat off the other fresh-faced young things hoping to make their parents' proud in and around Medway. a

a To the delight of Sandra and Ken, young Kelly was able to return to her classmates at the Thomas Aveling School having been crowned the Towns' face of tomorrow.

For young Kelly Parsons it was to be her first ever taste of success and recognition.

Fast forward two decades and Kelly Parsons is now one of the UK's most famous faces. Kelly Parsons is now Kelly Brook.

Since that day back in 1993, Kelly has not looked back.

From modelling to TV, theatre to the silver screen, she has embraced every challenge.

There has been fabulous wealth and glamorous parties, heartache and tragedy, but Kelly has never allowed the blows to derail her desire to face the world with a smile.

What is more, she has never forgotten her roots. Even when rubbing shoulders with the great and the good of Hollywood, she was frequently making trips to the comforts of her parents' modest home.

And now Kent is once again her home. It may be a far cry from the street she grew up in, but her £1m retreat in Grafty Green, near Maidstone, allows her the best of both worlds – perfectly sited to allow swift access to London and the major airports, but also close to her mother.

Because as the clock welcomed in 2012, Kelly Brook will have hoped for a year less traumatic than 2011.

It was the year that saw the baby she was carrying – miscarry. It was an event which was to put a huge strain on her relationship with former Scottish international rugby player Thom Evans, and left her distraught.

Yet it would also bring, amid the tears, an inner strength to the star and, remarkably, cement their still young relationship.

“It was a very stressful year,” she admitted, before saying they were both “happy to take a bit of a breather” and spend some quality time together.

The couple only started dating in December 2010 and the pregnancy had come quicker than either were expecting.

Reflecting on the miscarriage, Kelly said: “We've not really had the chance to spend that sort of time together since we first met.

I was pregnant so quickly.

Kelly may be a Hollywood glamourpuss, but there’s no mistaking the heart and natural warmth which make her just as comfortable schmoozing with the stars as returning to her home county for a dose of the every day

Billy, but despite the couple buying the mansion in Kent together, his inability to settle down would eventually be their undoing.

“I don't really go out with famous guys,” Kelly says as she reflects on the star-studded names which make up her list of exes. “But once they become famous, they develop this thing called ego and it's a bit of a turn-off. Billy was the only person who was a little well known.”

The relationship with Billy may have eventually fizzled out, but her career was in no way harmed by appearing on his arm; combining her talent and his profile in the US certainly opened doors for her.

From modelling to films, she was able to take make the most of all opportunities – using his contacts as a springboard to showcase her own ability to impress.

But make no mistake – she was already well established before Billy was able to sprinkle a little extra stardust.

The pregnancy had been announced online via Kelly's Twitter feed. It came just four months after the duo had met, and just three since they started dating.

“It was a beautiful thing,” Kelly said of the situation, “but a very scary thing too. All of a sudden we found ourselves having to think about having a family with someone I didn't know very well.

“We had our fair share of trials and tribulations with my pregnancy.

My hormones were all over the place. What's more, I didn’t know if I wanted to be in a relationship, because we’d only really just met.”

The miscarriage, which was confirmed just two months later, left Kelly dazed. She return to the bosom of her family – her constant refuge from the sometimes wild and crazy world she inhabited – as she tried to get over the trauma.

For now, at least, there is no rush to start a family.

Building up a strong relationship with Thom is key – and, perhaps, to try and avoid the pitfalls of her relationships with Hollywood stars Billy Zane and Jason Statham and rugby player Danny Cipriani.

Marriage had appeared to be on the cards with Titanic heart-throb

and curvy figure was going to be a compelling proposition for many.

Starting as a model she worked on a range of major campaigns – appearing for the likes of Renault, Fosters, and Walkers crisps.

But it was when the red-top tabloids began to take interest that her profile started to rocket.

The Daily Star made her their Page Three pin-up, alerting the likes of GQ, Loaded and FHM all to feature her in their pages.

Meanwhile, she was breaking into television too. Firstly as a presenter for a children's TV show and then, in 1999, came her big break, as co-host of Channel 4's Big Breakfast. It was perhaps the only blot on her CV. She came in for much criticism during her stint on the show and many feared it could be such a big blow to a career it may force it onto the rocks. She quit after just six months.

But Kelly was stronger than that.

She focused on the modelling, while developing her acting skills – taking small roles in movies to gain vital experience, while her beauty a

a ensured she was never short of assignments.

Appearances on TV and the silver screen on both sides of the Atlantic increased, while in 2005 she topped the 100 Sexiest Women in the World list compiled by FHM, and the following year Grazia magazine readers named her owner of the best body in Britain.

There was no stopping her.

Since then she has starred in advertisements for the likes of T Mobile, Reebok and Lynx, while she also appeared in Playboy in 2010. She even has her own fashion deal with chain New Look, which sees her design her own range of outfits.

Her TV career in the UK has, however, not been all smooth.

Unveiled as the big name for the 2007 edition of the BBC's Strictly Come Dancing, she was forced to pull out after the death of her father.

Ken died, aged just 57, from cancer.

It was a devastating blow to Kelly, then 28. She returned to dance after his death but it was apparent the stress and strain were showing. By week nine she reluctantly made the decision to pull out of the show.

Two years later, and to much fanfare, she was unveiled as the fourth judge on Britain's Got Talent – the latest Simon Cowell show looking to cash-in on the boom in reality TV show talent contests.

But her stay was shortlived, apparently after falling out with presenters Ant & Dec. She left before the live shows.

Her acting continues to deliver high profile roles however, with a role in ITV's latest take on Agatha Christie's Miss Marple. Kelly was a key cast member in an episode of Marple which, coincidentally, saw much location work shot in Kent – at the picturesque village of Chilham near Canterbury.

And in 2010 she had a lead role in big-screen hit Piranha 3D – which required her body to dazzle as much as her acting. The film proved a big money maker, quadrupling its budget at the box office.

As for the future, Kelly Brook shows no sign of slowing. Her career continues to offer her opportunities in modelling, acting and TV work, while her reputation has never been higher.

She's grown up an awful lot since that Medway beauty pageant, but at the age of just 32, she still has plenty to look forward to.

Happy back in Kent, 2012 could just prove to be Kelly's best yet. Mmm

E

VERY town has something which defines it and around which its fortunes have been won or lost.

Tunbridge Wells has its spa, Canterbury its cathedral and Ashford its railway heritage.

Yet while for many settlements religion, architecture or culture sculpt their identity, for Chatham and the other towns within Medway, industry has provided the backbone and the dockyard its beating heart.

Over hundreds of years it has ebbed and flowed liked the river which laps at is shores.

Today it stands as the world's most

complete example of an historic dockyard from the age of sail and early steam. Dating back to 1700, it was instrumental in securing and maintaining Britain's worldwide influence, leading the world in industrial design, naval architecture and military technology.

Yet while steeped in a rich history of monarchs and heroes, it is perhaps its most modern history which is the most fascinating.

Because since 1984 it ceased to be a place of innovation and industry. Its closure would have a profound effect on the area and bring the curtain down on 430 years of maritime history.

But it has been reborn as a place

which revels in the essential and significant role it played in this island's long history and, as the Historic Dockyard, it is not only a top tourism destination but a candidate for future World Heritage status.

Few who know anything about its history would doubt it deserves such a prestigious honour.

Yet it is the royal connection which resounds through the years and continues to pull in the thousands of visitors it receives every year.

During the Victorian period, dockyards were divided into groups according to construction capacity.

There were just four termed the 'great' dockyards; Portsmouth, Plymouth, Glasgow and Chatham.

Explains a spokesman for the Historic Dockyard Chatham: “The royal dockyards provided the Royal Navy with the shore support facilities it required to build, repair and maintain the fleet.

“Central to any royal dockyard was, as the name suggests, their dry docks, and it was the provision of these expensive structures that set the royal yards apart from their civilian counterparts until well into the 19th century.

“By the mid-18th century the royal yards had developed into one the largest industrial organisations in the world, with complex facilities supporting thousands of skilled workers in a wide number of trades.

“Indeed it was the level of the facilities and skills provided in the royal dockyards, particularly at Chatham, that underpinned the Royal Navy's success – from victory in battle; through the epic voyages of discovery made by Cook, Darwin and others; to the ceaseless antislavery patrols of the 19th century and the imposition of Pax Britannica (peace in Europe from 1815-1914).”

Perhaps more remarkable, however, is the fact that discoveries continue even to this day.

Just last year emerged the first evidence to confirm the site of Henry VIII's dockyard – and it was made by a TV crew.

The discoveries were made for

Pub Dig, presented by comedian Rory McGrath – due to be broadcast on Channel 5 this spring, and revealing how Chatham was giving up its secrets and they were more remarkable than ever.

The evidence uncovered included a ship’s hook, nails and tankards used by Tudor ship builders from the time of Henry VIII. They also found the foundations of a vast Georgian building that would have been filled with the cannon that armed ships including Nelson’s Victory – the famous craft which was built at Chatham.

Paul Blinkhorn, the archaeologist on the project, said: “Diggingat the Chatham Dockyard was both a a

a thrill and a privilege.

“To be able to carry out the first formal excavations on a site of such global importance was an experience I shall never forget, and the results were better than we could have dared to hope.”

The show was focused around the Command House pub in Chatham – once the headquarters of the Storekeeper of Ordnance; responsible for all naval armaments. Which acts as timely reminder of the power and significance of the dockyard as generations grow up knowing it only as a site of history rather than current industry.

Today, the Historic Dockyard Chatham has been shortlisted to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site, while the council is keen to once again put engineering at the heart of industry. It is pursuing a policy which has a focus on education – and a desire to return to apprenticeships as a method of engaging youngsters and leading them into local industries – which keep the economy strong and unemployment low.

While the loss of the dockyard as a place of employment continues to be felt and had a devastating affect on local communities, today it is facing up to ia new way of making an impression on the world stage.

It is frequently a popular destination for film crews, with some of the biggest movies in recent years filming key scenes at the dockyard.

Sherlock Holmes with Robert Downey Jnr and Jude Law, Pirates of the Caribbean with Johnny Depp and plenty of others are among the stars to visit for Hollywood.

But as a tourist destination it stands tall. Young and old alike are attracted to discover the heritage which shaped the area, and shaped the county, country and even the world. Mmm 42mm

THE French marque's desire to grab a slice of the fashionconscious car buyer market with its new look Twingo was underlined after it enlisted the combined creative talents of four European artists, including Nicola Roberts from Girls Aloud, to create a series of bespoke city cars.

The new Twingo, says Renault, has been designed to fuse the best of the values which made the original a success, with the innovation and cutting-edge modernity of the firm today.

It certainly took a long look at the opposition â&#x20AC;&#x201C; with its big fog lights more than a little nod towards the Nissan Juke's ability to use big eyes to woo an audience.

The new-look city car includes a softer front end and the use of the likes of fashion designer Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, chef Davide Scabin, designer Nils Holger Moormann and the Girls Aloud star Nicola Roberts, makes apparent it's desire to be the cool kid on the block.

With sales of Apple's iPad 2 continuing to keep the cash tills ticking over, the company behind it is keen not to sit still.

Rumours persist that despite claims from its late CEO Steve Jobs that a mini iPad would not go into production, Apple appears interested in extend its range of the market-leading tablet.

It is believed to be encouraged to look at a range of screen sizes in light of the on-going success of Amazon's Kindle which recently reduced in size.

Speculation suggests should a smaller version hit the market, it will do so by the end of 2012 and only once the eagerly anticipated iPad 3 has been released.

Star Wars Episode 1 Out now

JUST when you thought the juggernaut that is Star Wars had run its course, the saga returns to the big screen in 3D. Starting this month with the Phantom Menace, it gives fans the chance to get all angry again at the Jar Jar Binks character while youngsters who have not yet enjoyed the the splendour of one of cinema's most remarkable success stories on the big screen can settle down with a big tub of popcorn and revel in George Lucas' science-fiction story. For many, Star Wars could provide 3D with a major new driving force. For others, simply an excuse to peddle product we have already purchased on a variety of platforms already.

Whatever, your view on the marketing, Star Wars is still a fantastic cinematic experience.

Into The Abyss Release: March

Amid all the comic book heroes and fluffy rom-coms, cinema can occasionally deliver documentaries in such a way that it's worth making a jaunt to the local multiplex. The documentary Into The Abyss hits the screens next month and, if you're lucky, it will reaching the multi-screen hubs nearby. Subtitled a Tale of Death, A Tale of Life, it focuses on those involved in a triple murder case in Texas. It features extensive interviews with two men convicted of the crime – one on death row, the other facing a life sentence – in addition to those whose lives were changed by the events. Critics and the public alike have applauded it – with many headlines grabbed by the interview with Michael Perry – conducted just days before he was killed by the state.

Sundance London April 26-29

HOLLYWOOD hero Robert Redford and 12-time Grammy Award winner, the songwriter T Bone Burnett will open the first-ever Sundance London music and film festival in April. The new four-day event takes place at the O2 Arena in Greenwich and is designed to bring a taste of the original Sundance Festival in the US to the UK. An Evening with Robert Redford and T Bone Burnett will be chaired by author and screenwriter Nick Hornby, while the rest of the event will feature the UK premieres of films fresh from the Sundance Film Festival which took place in Utah in January. You can expect to hear an awful lot about Charles Dickens this year as 2012 marks the 200th anniversary of the literary giant's birth.

And with a history steeped in Kent, the county is set to be at the very heart of the celebrations.

Having spent several years of his childhood in Chatham, he would holiday in Broadstairs and then returned to see out his years living in Gads Hill at Higham.

It was within the walls of the house – which is now a school – that Dickens spent the final day of his life working on the novel the Mystery of Edwin Drood.

When he passed away the manuscript was left less than half finished.

But his legacy was in the rich body of work he left behind which continues to thrill audiences of the stage, TV and film alike for generations and for generations to come.

To appreciate the impact he's had, actor, writer and theatre director Simon Callow has penned a new biography – Charles Dickens and the Great Theatre of the World, and will join in the celebrations marking Dickens' 200th anniversary by reading excerpts in performances around the UK.

Simon Warne, tax partner at the firm (pictured), which deals in national audit, tax and business advice, said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Investing in forestry could be attractive to people who are eager to diversify their investment portfolio and take advantage of tax reliefs."

Buying a forest, directly or indirectly through shares in an established forestry investment company, can lead to major tax benefits, claims Mr Warne. When a commercial forest, or share in one, has been

owned for two years it qualifies for 100 per cent business property relief, meaning it is also free from inheritance tax on death.

In addition, the increase in the value of timber, but not the land, is exempt from Capital Gains Tax and income derived from the revenue generated by cutting down and selling the trees is free from both Corporation and Income Tax. Mr Warne concludes: "Investing in forestry provides an alternative option and has little correlation to stocks and shares, even inflation has little effect on forestry investments as the cost of timber is mostly dictated by simple supply and demand principles. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Environmentally friendly, sustainable and considered low risk over the medium to long-term,

timber merits serious consideration as a class of investment."

Sowing a seed of caution, and highlighting the fact that investing in forestry and timber is best suited to the sophisticated and well-advised investor, Crowe Clark Whitehill has highlighted that direct timber investments require a large amount of capital.
