Monks Granary was originally constructed to serve as a large warehouse for used timbers salvaged from the refectory of Faversham Abbey, which was built by King Stephen and his wife Queen Matilda in 1148, and was also thought to be their burial place.

The abbey was torn down as part of King Henry VIII’s plans to sweep the monastries from England, and today Monks Granary is one of the oldest surviving warehouses in Britain.

Don’t miss a visit to the lovely garden to admire the many speciality plants and shrubs, as well as the large selection of glazed and terracotta pots.

You will also be made very welcome at the Standard Quay Tea Room which serves delicious homemade food, so you can treat yourself to a snack, meal, or maybe a piece of homemade cake – all created on the premises.

THE BIG CAT SANCTUARY “Protection is our passion” Providing a future for some of the most beautiful and endangered cats on the planet ABOUT THE CAUSE

The Big Cat Sanctuary is home to more than 50 cats spanning 15 different species. Based at Smarden, they are a sanctuary and breeding centre of excellence that takes a personal approach to the care of their resident cats.

Their aim is to contribute to global breeding programmes, helping to maintain genetic diversity in a captive population, with the ultimate aim to reintroduce the animals to their their counterparts in the wild. The sanctuary also supports other conservation initiatives, both in the UK and all around the world.

THE MISSION

The sanctuary has four pillars of ethos: Welfare, breeding, conservation and education. These objectives, and the dedication of The Big Cat Sanctuary’s team of staff and volunteers, help them to make a difference.

Across the planet, 80 per cent of all big cats are endangered – so effective conservation efforts are essential in maintaining a healthy ecosystem in which these predators play such a vital role.

The cub, Maya, needed round-the-clock care and feeding as well as love and commitment in order to pull through. Another cub, a baby cheetah called Willow, also came into his care at the sanctuary aged just five months.

She needed special attention after being separated from her mother following the trauma of an injury in her early days.

This was all in addition to the daily care of the other cats, and the TV series gave a true insight into the tasks at hand.

SITTINGBOURNE & KEMSLEY LIGHT RAILWAY

his unique line was built by the Lloyd family in 1905 to transport materials for the manufacture of paper and finished products between the River Swale and their paper mills at Sittingbourne and Kemsley.

The 2ft 6in gauge line continues to use the steam engines and rolling stock that were supplied to operate the railway in its working life, prior to its preservation in 1969.

From 30 March, trains will depart hourly from 1-4pm on Sundays from Sittingbourne Viaduct, which is within Sittingbourne Retail Park and has free parking (Satnav ME10 2XD).

The journey takes 15 minutes, so a round trip can take less than an hour. However, at least two hours are recommended for the visit.

HISTORY OF THE LINE

The Sittingbourne & Kemsley Light Railway is the preserved southern half of the former Bowaters Railway.

Newspaper magnate Edward Lloyd built Sittingbourne Mill in 1867 to supply his empire with paper. The railway was originally a horsedrawn tramway. In 1905, the first steam traction arrived, and by the system’s heyday there were 14 steam locomotives.

The mill at Sittingbourne relied on raw materials being brought in by barge from Milton Creek, then, after the end of the First World War, the new Ridham Dock and Tramway. This included a viaduct over half-a-mile long that is still in use today.

A pleasure-filled reservoir in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty located in the heart of the High Weald

H

ome to the largest stretch of inland water in the South East, where rustic woodland trails and an array of wildlife surround the water’s edge, there is something for just about everyone at Bewl Water.

Activities include cycling or walking around the reservoir to take in all the impressive views. If you feel up to the challenge, you can tackle the whole 12.5-mile route. There are lots of exciting nature trails, and you can spot blankets of bluebells, anemones and wild garlic throughout the spring.

There is plenty to do out on the water, too, including sailing, fishing and pedalo hire (weather dependent) or, for a more relaxing experience, the Bewl Belle offers boat trips so you can sit back and take in the panoramas.

Keep little ones entertained with mini golf or the adventure playground, which is fully equipped with plenty of fun climbing frames.

There is also a brand new soft play area in The Waterfront Café. Or those who are a little older can try out the Laser Challenge, which guarantees an adrenaline-filled contest as you hide out and camouflage yourself throughout the dens and bunkers in the woods!

After a day of fun, refuel in the café, which provides hot drinks, refreshments and cream teas – or for something a bit more substantial, head to The Boat House Bistro. Perched on the water’s edge, it serves a weekly changing menu, including trout caught from Bewl Water itself – the perfect way to finish a hearty walk!
