The European Delegation of Make Mothers Matter What progress concerning the reconciliation of work and family life in Europe? The European Parliament wishes to influence the European Commission’s new initiative on the reconciliation of work and family life, which is expected by the end of the year. The Parliament already adopted Maria Arena’s report on parental leave, last May 12th. This Belgian Member of Parliament had taken into account mothers’ demands expressed in the survey “What Mothers in Europe want”, which the European Delegation had passed on to her. This report requests that the Commission and social partners suggest extending the length of parental leave from 4 to 6 months at least, and that this extension may be taken beyond the prescribed age of 8 years old for the child. Furthermore, the report emphasizes that taking a European directive on a minimum twoweek paternity leave is urgent, to facilitate the reconciliation of work and family life for both parents. The Delegation also is working on the draft of the report, which is being discussed, to recommend that the Right to Request flexible working conditions should be included. “Vivamus porta

est sed est.”

MMM at the 2016 World Conference Women Deliver Olalla Michelena, General Secretary of the European MMM Delegation, went to the conference in Copenhagen, which gathered stakeholders on women’s rights from all over the world. She mainly attended the sessions on maternal and child health and noted best practises which exist in this field. The conference gathered 5700 participants from 169 countries, policy makers, academics, representatives from the UN or the civil society, stakeholders all of them, concerned by the rights of women worldwide. The prior aim of the conference was the implementation of the SDGs and it focused on health, maternal, sexual and reproductive rights, as well as gender equality, environmental education and economic empowerment. Like Women Deliver, MMM firmly believes that investing in women and girls in the fields of health, maternal, sexual and reproductive rights benefits the whole of society worldwide and can create important economical outlets for them. World leaders like Bill and Melinda Gates took the opportunity of this conference to announce an engagement worth 80 million dollars to bridge the lack of data relating to gender and to accelerate progress for women and girls. The Mckinsey Institute highlighted the 6 fields which could create such economical outlets for women if their services were more accessible: education, family planning, maternal health, financial inclusion, digital inclusion and support for unpaid care work. For more information, please go to http://www.wd2016.org MMM at the Open Door Days of the European Parliament On May 28th 2016, the Open Door Days at the European Parliament welcomed some 7000 people. In this context, the European MMM Delegation held a stand to present the advocacy work undertaken by MMM with the European instances, and to raise the awareness of the people whom they met about defending mothers’ interests.

MMM Conference MOTHERS AND HEALTH: THE UNTAPPED POTENTIAL Make Mothers Matter celebrated International Women’s Day 2016 by organising an international conference on “Mothers and Health” on the 7th and 8th of March at the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) in Brussels. Nearly 150 participants from the European Union institutions, UN agencies, academia and NGOs from all over the world gathered to discuss the challenges and good practices. It was agreed by all stakeholders that mothers can “Vivamus porta be empowered to be agents of change in their communities, to be transformers, not conformers. est sed est.” showing that when mothers are informed, trained and supported they Innovative practices were presented are part of the solution to promote sustainable health, for both themselves and their children.

Dr. Marleen Temmerman, Chair of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Aga Khan University in Nairobi and former WHO Director, highlighted in her keynote presentation the remaining challenges for maternal and child health in Africa. In addition, maternal health is not just an issue in the Global South. In 2013, there were 1,900 maternal deaths in Europe and 1 out of 10 women do not have access to prenatal care. In some countries, such as the US, maternal deaths are even increasing, justifying the need to rethink maternal health as an equal right for everyone.

Therefore, many speakers underlined the urgent necessity of access to quality, essential health-care services for all women. The presentations and discussions covered a wide range of other issues including nutrition, HIV, health literacy, and innovative practices to promote women and children’s physical and mental health.
