Dear Parishioners, An excellent form of prayer is to meditate on the Passion of Our Lord. St. Theresa of Avila, a great mystic of the Church used to do this all the time. It can be a rich way of expressing love for Christ. One of the things you can do is, after calling to mind a scene from the sufferings of Christ, attempt to use the imagination in retelling the story in your mind. Ask yourself, “Who am I in this story?” You could imagine that you are the soldier, who drove in the nails, or maybe you are a passerby and you stopped to wash his face with a towel. You can take this a step forward and speak words of consolation to our Lord, asking his forgiveness. The important thing is that in some way you make the story real for you. This becomes not only mental prayer but prayer of the heart. Many of the saints prayed this way, and it is most helpful. Do not be afraid to be creative in your meditation, because Our Lord can use that to draw us closer to him. Sincerely yours,

Father John Pardue
