Dear Parishioners, This past Wednesday, we celebrated the feast of the death of St. John the Baptist, who died for telling the truth. That is why he is a prophet; he spoke the truth about God. Herod, the King, had married his brother’s wife while his brother was still alive. That is adultery! John pointed that out loud and clear for the sake of Herod’s soul, and the king executed John. John died for the truth, and in dying for the truth, he died for Christ. He suffered a martyr’s death. What does the truth mean to you? Are you willing to stand for it? What if someone threatened you with your life, would you still stand for it? Or would you then decide that the truth is relative? When I was a boy, my father had a chat with me about the importance of speaking the truth. I have never forgotten that conversation and the importance of always telling the truth. It has stayed with me my whole life. John the Baptist has been set before us as an example to follow. May the truth be something we treasure all the days of our life. Sincerely yours, Father John
