Dear Parishioners, Last week we explored the meaning of the human conscience. Let’s now consider how we use our conscience, our voice of truth, in regard to moral choices as it pertains to our life in society, specifically in the realm of voting. As the election approaches in just a few months, it is important for us to look not only at the candidates but also at the issues. In moral theology, there is what is called a disqualifying issue. According to Father Stephen Torraco, who wrote in the leaflet, “A Brief Catechism for Catholic Voters,” a disqualifying issue is one “of such enormity that by itself it renders a candidate for office unacceptable regardless of his position on other matters.” For example if a candidate promotes abortion rights, he has disqualified himself as a person for whom Catholics can vote. It does not matter where he stands on the other issues because he has been disqualified. To me, nothing could be clearer. To vote for a pro-abortion candidate violates one’s conscience. Sincerely yours, Father John

AMERICAN BIBLE CHALLENGE TO PREMIERE The American Bible Challenge, an original one-hour game show hosted by comedian Jeff Foxworthy, will premiere on Thursday, August 23, at 7:00 pm on Game Show Network (GSN). Encourage the whole family to watch this enriching new show that will utilize current, as well as historical references from the world’s best-selling book. THE JOY OF TECHNOLOGY!!

To commemorate the September 11 terrorist attack, the Knights of Columbus passed a resolution in 2004 to observe September 11 as a world day of prayer for peace. Observance of this special day seeks to unite Knights, Catholics and all people of good will regardless of their religious faith - in prayer for peace. For more information, go to www.kofc.org .

We installed Windows 7 on my office computer last week (from XP) and unfortunately I lost all my email contacts in Outlook. If you are a parishioner with whom I often or even sometimes communicate via email, please send me a hello so I can get you back into my Contacts. I backed up everything before the changeover - except my Contacts. Thank you! Laura

40 Days for Life is a focused pro-life campaign with a vision to access God’s power through prayer, fasting, and peaceful vigil to end abortion. Pray for those involved in prayer vigils and pro-life action around the country. And consider fasting or doing without a favorite activity, like video games, TV or the Internet.
