A report from Rismark analysed home purchases and sales over the last 11 years to find out what returns have been earned by investors. This is a good sample period as it captures the housing market boom and the correction over 2004 to 2006, the GFC in 2007 to 2008, and the latest figures from 2010 -2011.

The report shows that over the 11 year period from 2000 to today (over 3 million transactions in total) over 48% of people earned a capital growth of more than 10% per annum.
