I dedicate this book to my father, because this story is about him.

It was a hot, sunny day in Petchaboon, Thailand. Everyone was watching children dance on a stage near the temple. The monk was dressed in bright orange robes. People were clapping and were happy on this beautiful morning. My name is Sumon Suwan and I was 29 years old when I lived in Thailand. I lived with my mother and father in Petchaboon. My home was wooden and dark in color. My mother made the best rice and eggs. I also remember eating bananas from the trees outside.

While I loved my country, I had nothing to do. I did not have enough money. Our house was old, too. So I decided to go to California. I was sad because I had to leave my parents. I left my country because I needed a better life.

After many months of saving my money, I was able to buy a ticket to America. Under the orange sky, the sun set, and my plane took off. I looked out the window and saw my country. I was missing my parents, friends, and all the fruits of Thailand, especially coconuts and peaches. I had a long trip so I slept on the plane for the whole day. I woke up when the pilot said “California ahead.” I was happy because I couldn’t wait for a better life.

Finally, I arrived in San Francisco. It was early morning and the sky was clear. The weather was warm but the breeze from the ocean was chilly. I grabbed my suitcase and went outside the airport and waved my hand for a taxi. I only had to wait a few minutes when a red taxi came. I sat in the backseat and I told the driver to take me to the hotel. He drove me across a bridge. It’s called the Golden Gate Bridge. I was a little bit sad about leaving my country, but I noticed metal cables hanging on the bridge. I had seen pictures of this famous bridge. All I can think of now is that I wish I could have a job. And... I wish I could have a son.

After a short time in San Francisco, I got on another plane. I went to Waltham to find a job. Later, I found a building with a big window and it was old and did not have a sign on it. I thought that I could be a new boss. But I needed someone to help me. I found my friends. They said, “We will help you.” I am happy that I have a restaurant called Pho and Spice. Then something exciting happened. My wife, Tippy was pregnant. I took her to the hospital. The doctor said, “Push!” and then the baby came out. The doctor said, “Congratulations! You have a baby boy.” The doctor asked, “What are you going to name him?” Tippy and I thought, “What name should we pick?” Then I got an idea. I said his name should be Ryan. I am happy that I have a son and I have a job. I think that I will have a vacation with my son and Tippy.
