An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Defence Services Staff College, Army War College, Mhow, Naval Post Graduate School, Monterrey, the United States and National Defence College, New Delhi, the General served in the Indian Army with distinction for four decades, holding significant command, staff and instructional appointments, before retiring while holding the prestigious post of the Director General of Artillery. His combat experience has been vast, spanning across multiple operational situations. By virtue of his intense professional knowledge and experience in defence planning and acquisition, he was able to provide great impetus to the modernization of our artillery through indigenization. He was the prime mover behind major 155 milli meter Gun Projects like the Dhanush, M777 ULH and K9 Vajra, Rocket and Missile Projects related to Pinaka, Brahmos, Grad BM21, Surveillance Projects like Swati WLR and a few ammunition projects. Post retirement, Gen Shankar has turned a Professor in the Aerospace Department of IIT Madras, and is actively involved in applied research, besides penning articles and delivering talks at various forums.

Capt D P Ramachandran is a veteran of the 1971 Bangladesh War, wherein he saw frontline combat, commanding a squadron of tanks. After serving in the army for ten years, he switched over to a corporate career that spanned thirty-six years. An avid researcher of military history, he has authored four books and several articles on the subject for various publications He is also the Founder & Chairman of Colours of Glory Foundation, the first-ever organization in India to take up promoting awareness of the country’s military heritage. He regularly blogs for the website of the Foundation and have posted over 150 popular blogs so far.
