NORMAN PFAFF MESSAGE FROM THE DEPARTMENT COMMANDANT MARINES: How time flies. First of all, a belated Happy Birthday to our Corps and all our members and I hope you had a good birthday as I did. You probably read about the good time everyone had that attended the National Convention in Grand Rapids. It was a great success thanks to our co- chairs Wendy and Phil Zamora and all the hard work by a lot of good people. Mike King, Upper Peninsular Zone commandant, and I are working with the Sault Sainte Marie detachment to improve membership. On the same note, Fred Gibas, Northern Zone Commandant, Dave Masuna Jr. Vice Commandant, myself and several others Marine Corps League members went to Alpena and I'm happy to say that they are alive and well. If any detachment is in need of a helping hand or have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. I have appointed Kevin Jones as the Marine for Life representative for the Department of Michigan. Kevin’s e-mail address is kevin.i.jones@gm.com Our Mid-Winter Rally, hosted by the Department and the Auxiliary, is being held at the Double Tree Hotel in Bay City on January 10, 11 and 12th. We are having classes on responsibility of a Judge Advocate, Detachment Adjutant, and what it takes to host a state convention. Our guest speaker at the Banquet is Dr. Da-I Ping. Dr. Ping, a Marine and a Vietnam Veteran, was the feature article in the March issue of the Marine Corps Leatherneck magazine. Your Support for this convention with your Detachment ad will be greatly appreciated. Plan to have a good time and I will see you at the Convention. Lastly, I want to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year. Semper Fi

The Editors Comments Welcome back to the “NEW” Michigan Marine News. Our goal in the coming year is to be able to get to you the latest news from the DEPARTMENT OF MICHIGAN, MARINE CORPS LEAGUE and AUXILIARY We are asking each and every one of you to sign up at our email address michmarinenews@gmail.com to receive the online magazine. We are also going to ask our Zone Vice Commandants in the future to submit articles about their zones and what their detachments are up to. In the future we may go to quarterly issues, but for now we will only have three (3) issues that will go out. One will be in March or April before the Department Convention, this is so we can get you the convention packet to be able to attend in June, the Department Scholarship packet and Department Marine of the Year info. The second issue will come out just after the National Convention in August to pass on to you any new info that needs to be passed on to you, and the last issue of the year will be out in late November or early December so we can get the Mid-Winter packet out to you. This magazine will be going through growing pains so please be patient and just remember this is “YOUR MAGAZINE” but the Editor has the right to deny articles or pictures that are deemed inappropriate or out of uniform. SR VICE COMMANDANT WENDY L. ZAMORA
As Senior Vice Commandant, my role is to support our Commandant, Norm Pfaff, in all his endeavors and to step in during any absence that he may have. This can only happen with communication downstream and upstream. If you have concerns and questions it is important for you to speak to your Zone Commandant so he/she can try to answer your questions or move the question/concern to the next person upstream best suitable to answer your question or concern. Each Zone Commandant has willingly accepted your faith in them to fulfill their duties as the “go between with your detachment and the department. Do not be afraid to talk to them.
Another function of this position is to fundraise. You will have the opportunity to throw a pie at your Commandant, Norm Pfaff; Sr. Vice Cmdt., Wendy Zamora or Jr. Vice Cmdt., Dave Masunass. We will also be selling raffle tickets for a chance to win a Hand Crafted Wooden Field Cross and 50/50. Once your detachment receives the tickets, I encourage you to purchase a ticket to have an opportunity to win something that you may want to keep for yourself or gift to someone else.
All of the fundraisers we do benefit the detachments in various ways such as, Scholarships, Veteran Service Officer who is there to help any of you, Marines or families in distress and Eagle Scouts just to name a few. I want to encourage any of you to let me know if you have a fundraising idea that you think will work well for us.
It is that time of year that all detachments will be electing their new officers for the coming year, you must elect new or your current officers each and every year between September 1 thru May 15th. If you are someone that has always wanted to be an officer of your detachment but are not sure what needs to be done, then go to the National Website and download the Professional Development Program and this will help you understand each and every key position in the detachment. This program will help your current officers too; so download and read away.
Lastly, I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. This is the time of the year to enjoy your family. Be safe in your travels. Wendy Zamora is also the Department Scholarship chair and is on the National Semper Fidelis, Bylaws Committee Wendy Zamora

JR VICE COMMANDANT DAVID MASUNAS
As your Department Junior Vice Commandant it is my job to work with the members to improve our membership, retention and also work with our Department Commandant, Norm Pfaff and our Department Senior Vice Commandant, Wendy Zamora with what other tasks that need to be done on behalf of the Department.
In the Marine Corps we all learned that we succeeded as a team or we fail as a team. I can remember in boot camp doing the log drill. If one person didn’t lift their share of the weight the log got very heavy for the other Marines lifting the log. When every one worked together and lifted the log was still heavy but not as much. We all need to work together making the Department of Michigan the best that we can. When you see another Detachment member having trouble with their load then lend a hand and help them. We all earned the Eagle, Globe and Anchor giving us the right to call ourselves Marines creating a brother hood and sister hood that has stood the test of time. We pride ourselves on never leaving a Marine behind and it is our job to continue this by recruiting new members and reminding them “Once a Marine, always a Marine”.
The Department Mid Winter Convention will be held in Bay City January 10, 11, 2014 at the Double Tree Hotel. There will be information sent out soon about the convention. Make sure your members are keeping track of who and how many Marines they recruit for the Membership Recruitment Program. I’m look forward to serving as your Department Junior Vice Commandant. I don’t know all the answers but working as a team I know we will over come what ever comes our way. If you ever have any questions please contact me any time. Semper Fi Marines! Toys for Tots (T4T) is off and running in most Detachments and Marine Corps Reserve Centers, If you would like to be more involved with the T4T program then visit the website at www.toysfortots.org for your local coordinators. This initiative began in 1947 when then Major Bill Hendricks and a group of Marine reservists in Los Angeles, California., collected and distributed 5,000 toys to needy children, an effort that resulted in a nationwide campaign a year later. Since its inception, the Toys for Tots national campaign distributed 465 million toys to 216 million underprivileged children, according to the 2012 Annual report. In 2012, Marine reservists and volunteers distributed more than 16.8 million toys to more that 7 million less fortunate children. Those wishing to contribute can donate a toy valued at $15 or less in a Toys for Tots bin from now through the middle of December. All Detachments that are involved with T4T’s please submit a report to National MCL on your involvement and total toys that have been collected.

Though the final weeks of July were the hottest in Michigan all summer , temps fell into the mid to low 70s the first week of August—just in time for the Marine Corps Leaguers who gathered in Grand Rapids to comfortably enjoy all the 2013 National Convention had to offer. Marines, Corpsmen, Associates and Auxiliary members started to occupy the Amway Grand Plaza hotel beginning Friday to get the lay of the land before the opening ceremony on Monday. On Sunday night, everyone who showed up in time for the early bird reception were treated to a pasta station and great entertainment by the Tom and Jerry Band. At 0800 Monday, just outside the Amway Grand, Marines from the I&I Staff Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 24th Marines, 4th Marine Division, raised the colors before all League and Auxiliary members. Right after colors, all who wanted to attend walked over to the President Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum to watch MCL National Commandant Jim Tuohy and outgoing MCLA National President Gerri Tuohy lay a wreath on President and Mrs. Ford’s tomb. It was a somber moment for all to witness. The convention got underway, reports were given and guest speakers presented information we would take back to our detachments. On Wednesday, it was the DOGS turn to shine. More than 190 MODD dogs were elevated to Pedigree Devil Dog, and the supreme Growl was a great time. Chief Devil Dog Mike English announced that the donation by the Kennel was the largest ever; More than 26,500 Big Bones were given to the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital. The Dogs also got a new Chief Devil Dog - Ken Travis of the Florida Pack is the 55th Chief Devil Dog. Meetings resumed on Thursday, and the Scottsdale Plaza Resort in Arizona was approved as the 2015 National Convention site. Friday was election day, followed by the grand banquet where guest speaker Major Gen. Michael R. Regner told us how our Marines are doing throughout the world, It was a great speech. Next, the new MCLA National President, Jackie Hunter was installed and National Commandant was re-installed for his second year as our National Commandant. The National Marine of the Year is Polly Weidenkopf of the Big D Detachment 316 in the Department of Texas. The Kennel Dog of the Year was PDD Thomas W. Hazlett Sr. of the Pennsylvania Pack. The Convention culminated two years of hard work by our Michigan convention committee. We would like to thank all who attended the convention in Grand Rapids. We hope you will come back again to visit our beautiful state. Story was ran in the Nov/Dec 2013 Semper Fi magazine
