My daughter, Isabelle, rolled over late. She crawled late, walked late, and learned to use a fork late. “Late” was a word that I began to dread. My pediatrician constantly reminded me that my child wasn’t hitting her milestones, as Izzy parroted “Hitting milestones!” from the cold exam table. Izzy was, and still is, a talker. She couldn’t walk to get herself a snack, but she could tell me exactly what color gummy she needed from her comfy spot on the living room floor. So I worried. My curious and clever toddler was not toddling. Other parents would tell me about how their child walked at 10 months or on their first birthday, and I began to wonder if my 15 month-old would ever get up and go. As moms, we are instinctively worried about our babies. But we’re also conditioned to worry. Conditioned by our friends, by strangers, by the internet, and even by our trusted doctors. Is she getting enough tummy time? Why won’t he grasp his toys yet? What am I doing wrong?

By Caitlin Feighan

Rather than sitting around and waiting for the next big milestone, I chose to distract myself from the everyday woes of motherhood. I tried a few mommy and me groups, and always felt like I was watching from the outside of the clique. As a twenty four year-old stay-at-home-mom with zero mommy friends, I wasn’t sure how to approach other parents without feeling totally awkward. I would talk with moms at the park, and of course the friendships always ended as soon as we got in the car. There was no exchanging of numbers, no playdates set up. After failing a few times to find the right group for us, I decided to give it one final try. I remember so distinctly the first time that I took Isabelle to a parent-child class at The Little Gym of Doylestown. Her teacher met me at the door, introduced herself to my little one, and brought us into the gym. There were at least ten other babies in there- some walking, some not. No one felt bad for me because my kid was scooting around on the floor. No one told me to try a walker or some fancy shoes. They just asked me her name, how old she was, and welcomed me into the group. Over the course of the season, I got to know all of the moms in our Tuesday class and even began to meet them outside of the gym to get our kids together. These kids were running circles around Isabelle (literally), yet I managed to leave my worries at the door. There was something about the music, the colors, and the laughter in the gym that made it impossible to care about anything other than having fun. In a matter of weeks, my daughter was using our living room as her own personal “little gym.” She was running around, climbing on the couch, and falling all over herself. While I’m positive that she would have eventually learned to do these things on her own, I have to give at least a little credit to her “Birds” class at The Little Gym. For the first time, she saw other babies her age tottering around and she wanted to keep up with them. She pulled herself up on a big blue mat and took off. For us, The Little Gym of Doylestown isn’t just a place to take gymnastics. It’s a community of parents who come together once a week to build each other up, establish friendships, and occasionally goggle over how cute each other’s kids are. There is no “late.” There is no “early.” There is only serious fun.

Tips for Spring Cleaning: 1. Time to change your cleaning routine to a more chemically free and healthier way: Changing just a few things can make a huge difference! 2. Change your laundry detergent to a more gentle brand, Tons of options at local health food stores or make your own. 3. Did you know you can use essential oils and baking soda? Chemical FREE. I use baking soda and lemon and orange oils in my sinks, toilets, tubs and showers. Baking soda gives you the extra grit you need. 4. Organize one room or closet a week, have the kids help you and make a game out of it. 5. Spring Cleaning can be easier on you when you break your task down to an hour a day, or 2 hours a week. Don't try and cram everything in to one day or weekend and make yourself crazy. The outdoors are calling you, don't waste a whole day inside.

Roxy Therapy Dogs: Bringing Value to the Community Through Smiles Have you ever considered the value of a smile? When that smile is on the face of a child who is in the company of a Roxy™ Therapy Dog team, that smiles translates into self-esteem, relief from anxiety and fear, and a sense of well-being. Founded in 2005, Roxy™ Therapy Dogs is a non-profit, 501 c 3 organization dedicated to bringing highly trained and certified therapy dogs to Bucks County children. Roxy Therapy Dog teams have a way of making children feel safe and relaxed, accelerating physical and emotional healing and enabling tremendous learning to take place.

By Pamela Carroll to make the child feel comfortable. Conversation is focused on the therapy dog and the child’s experiences with dogs, other pets or animals, or even favorite stuffed animals – not personal or medical questions. Children like to get to know the pet and will often ask, “How old is the dog?” “What kind of dog is she?” “Is she a boy or a girl?” and “Is she your dog?”

In many settings, the dogs give comfort and joy to the adults who are present as well, including teachers, healthcare workers, family members, lawyers, judges, and facility staff.

Children are encouraged to read through its Elementary School Reading Inspiration program where Roxy teams read with over 3,000 Central Bucks School District elementary students per week. In classes where reading is not the focus, the Elementary School Specialized Support program provides comfort and support for students with special educational or developmental needs. Teens who are suffering a loss or who struggle with stress and anxiety are comforted through the Secondary School Stress Relief program. The judicial system can be a scary place for children but Roxy dogs are poised to calm a child’s fears at the Bucks County Courthouse through the Courthouse Companionship program. This program has gained nationwide attention and is used as a model for other municipalities. Roxy’s Pediatric Comfort program allows pediatric patients to enjoy a respite from medical treatment. Regardless of the location where a Roxy visit takes place, the Roxy Therapy Dog teams’ first priority is

Last year, the Roxy Therapy Dog organization collectively dedicated roughly 6,000 hours to serving and comforting children in the community. More than 3200 students were visited in 130 classrooms each week. What is the value of all those smiles? With 75 current active dog teams, the total value of the Roxy program volunteer hours in 2017 was $135,932.34. The Doylestown based organization relies solely on tax-deductible donations and is entirely run by volunteers. Its services are provided by trained, certified and insured volunteers, entirely free of charge to families, schools and taxpayers. Good volunteers with good therapy dogs produce great results in children. Its programs have served as models of excellence for therapy dog groups across the country. With increased demand for the support of Roxy Therapy Dogs, the organization welcomes donations, additional trained therapy dog teams as well as volunteers without pets who want to make a difference.

Cooing, sitting up, and crawling are signs that your baby is growing. Your baby’s vision has stages of development too, but the signs marking progress are not as obvious. Of the 3-4 million babies born every year in the US, 1 in 20,000 has retinoblastoma, 1 in 25 will develop strabismus, and 1 in 30 will develop amblyopia. Many eye conditions don’t have symptoms that can be identified by a parent or by a pediatrician in a well-baby visit. Early detection is the best way to ensure your child has healthy eyes and appropriate development of vision. InfantSEE is a program designed to ensure that eye and vision care becomes an integral part of infant wellness care. We feel so strongly about the importance of healthy vision that participating optometrists like Dr. Richard will provide a no-cost comprehensive infant eye and vision assessment between 6-12 months of age. Build The Kingdom at Kids Castle for All Abilities

by Joe Salvati, Friends of Kids Castle Chairman

We are overjoyed by the extremely generous donations received from Jeanne & John Hubbard. Together they sponsored three Play Pieces and two works of art which are part of our Save The Children’s Artwork Sponsorship Program. These donations help us continue the improvements needed at Kids Castle. The Donate Your Way program on our website provides opportunity for everyone to give in any amount you can afford. Please visit and click on the Donate Your Way option. Over the twenty-one years since Kids Castle opened in 1997 and despite regular and thorough mantainence, the playground struchtures were starting to approach their end of lifespan. Through volunteer support from the community, help from the Township and many generous donations; the Castle itself was saved but the surrounding play pieces could not be saved and needed to be removed. To help replace all of the old play pieces with new ones; a Capital Fundraising Plan was started and named Build The Kingdom at Kids Castle. Our call for help was answered by so many wonderful people that now only one more play piece is needed to be purchased and then installed once the funds are raised. The Tot Structure is that last play piece with a total cost of $36,000 to purchase, ship and install. Your donation can go directly to purchasing this play piece by visiting to make a dontation. This play piece along with many other play pieces that have been chosen for our playground build self-confidence by welcoming everyone to join in the fun. Children of all abilities including those with sensory processing disorders, autism, and kids using wheelchairs all have options here to play together and enjoy the playground. While play is an important part of children’s developmental needs, it also has to be fun enough for them to want to be part of that experience… and the improvements at Kids Castle accomplish this goal for all children. Thanks to the ongoing support of caring people like the Hubbard Family; the magic that is Kids Castle will continue forward for the thousands of children who visit the playground each year and for thousands more who will have a new opportunity to join in the fun. Please consider joining our Circle of Friends who are helping to provide a place to play for all children by making a donation in any amount you can afford. Visit the Donate Your Way section of our website at or donate directly to help us purchase the Tot Structure by visiting

Thank you all!

Q and A Section Q What is a quick healthy after school snack? A handful of nuts, pre-sliced carrot and celery with hummus or guacamole, apple or celery with organic peanut/almond butter.

4 cups organic rolled oats 2 cups organic peanut butter or almond butter 2 cups Arbonne Essentials protein powder (Vanilla or Chocolate or 1 cup of each flavor. Add Arbonne Fiber Boost for added fiber)

Or, put both in glass bowl and microwave for 1 minute. 2) Remove from heat; add protein powder and mix well. 3) Add rolled oats and mix well. 4) Roll into 1" balls. 5) Refrigerate for one hour. If you don’t want to roll the balls. Spread the combination into a 9 by 13 inch pan. Refrigerate for one hour then cut into squares.

Health Tip Water is all you need! The weather is getting warmer. Kids will be outside sweating more while playing sports or playing with friends. You may be tempted to buy a sport’s drink. A sport’s drink is not ideal as it is loaded with sugar, dyes, calories and other unhealthy ingredients. Water hydrates the body and replaces fluids lost during sweating! For kids and adults, drink water first thing in the morning as your body dehydrates while you sleep. Pack a water for lunch too! Keep a refillable BPA free bottles with your during the day and refill it. We should all drink half our body weight in ounces daily. More if it is hot outside or if you are sweating. Did you know that sometimes when you think you are hungry, it is actually your body needing more water?! If you need flavor in your water, add lemon, lime, cucumber, watermelon, strawberries or mint.

Q How much physical activity should my child be getting each day? The American Heart Association recommends that children and adolescence get at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity each day. Physical activity improves memory, develops muscle strength, keeps bones strong, improves heart health, and improves sleep just to name a few. And, it should be fun like jumping rope, hopscotch, playing hide and seek, swimming, sports, biking riding, hiking… Send questions to and put Mama’s Healthy Corner question and I will answer them in the next issue!
