h Welcome g

Dear Friends & Club Members,

H

oliday Greetings from all of us at the Schramsberg and Davies Vineyards! As challenging as this year has been on so many levels, we extend sincere gratitude to all of you for enjoying our sparkling and red wines and for supporting our team and business. We hope that our efforts, in turn, have provided you with some pleasure and positive moments in 2020. With fewer gatherings and parties this year, perhaps special bottles in more intimate settings are just the right prescription. Speaking for our family, this has definitely been the year to stock and explore the wine cellar! Despite fires, coronavirus, and everything else that has been thrown at us, our winemaking and production team has remained focused, flexible, and determined in preparing this year’s Schramsberg and Davies offerings. It is easy for us to say, but we truly believe that they are as diverse and delicious as we have ever crafted. Before we go any further, though, we need to take minute to give big props to our own winery crews and the firefighters who all defended our beloved home and historic winery as the Glass Fire

burned across the Schramsberg property over the week of Sunday, September 27. While our forest was charred and our vineyards were singed, our building infrastructure was remarkably untouched. We were very fortunate, and our hearts go out to our friends and neighbors who lost so much more. For those of you who have reached out to offer your support, we thank you, and encourage that donations be made to the Napa Valley Community Disaster Relief Fund, which is doing fantastic work helping those people most impacted in our county. Meanwhile, we are thrilled to report that as of the writing of this letter, Napa County has moved to the State of California’s “Orange List,” allowing us to again host cave tours and indoor tastings. We are open for business and visitation at both the Schramsberg Winery on Diamond Mountain and at the Davies Winery in St. Helena. Indeed, the North Coast wine country is very much alive, and we’re excited for your next visit. On a more personal note, we’re happy that our three boys – Emrys (10th), Nelson (9th) and Hughie (6th) –

have been able to return to school for on-campus classes. We offer appreciation to everyone, residents and visitors alike, for sticking with Covid-19 safety protocols in order to keep our positivity rate down. This year’s holiday catalog holiday catalog celebrates the full range of wines that we produce, and the vineyards, people and stories behind them. Leading off in the Schramsberg sparkling wine portfolio are our three têtes de cuvées. From the highly accoladed and long, even 2012 vintage season, the 2012 J. Schram Rosé is bursting with gorgeous tangy cherry and glazed citrus notes, layered with hints of brioche, vanillin, and toasted almond. From the coolest, latest vintage of the last 20 years, we love the verve, drive and richness of the 2011 J. Schram and 2011 Reserve. For those who want more than eight years of yeast aging, we have you covered with a truly small lot release of only 52 cases: our 2000 Brut Napa Valley Late Disgorged, which was aged for nineteen years “en tirage.” Two vineyard-designate sparkling wines also standout in this year’s catalog: the 2015 Schwarze Vineyard

Blanc de Blancs represents our 25-year partnership with the Schwarze family’s vineyard on the east side of Carneros Creek, and the 2015 Piedra Libre Brut delivers a 50/50 Chardonnay/Pinot Noir blend from the varied pockets of the Sonoma Coast’s Freestone Valley. On the Davies red wine front, it is with great pride that we present our fifth vintage of the J. Davies Estate “Jamie” Cabernet Sauvignon. Following four years of drought, the 2016 growing season took a normal quantity of winter rain and a light crop all the way to a deliciously ripe finish line. We’re pretty sure that Mom would approve. Two firsttime Davies Cabernet bottlings are also represented in this year’s catalog. Our 2017 St. Helena is blended from a select range of sites around our hometown, and a bottling from the Oakville AVA is a vineyard-designate from the red soils of Oscar Renteria’s “360 Vineyard” on the south side of Skellenger Lane. New among an exciting array of tasty 2018 Davies Pinot Noirs, is the bright, lifted “Perry Ranch” bottling, farmed by Steve Dutton’s team on the north side of our newly acquired Keefer Ranch in West Sonoma’s Green Valley. Again, on behalf of all of us at Schramsberg and Davies, we send you our very best for the holidays and the year ahead. We hope to have a chance to see you soon for a winery tasting in Napa Valley, via a virtual program, at an event closer to your home next spring, or—Covid permitting—on the North Sea Cruise next summer! (See page 35 for information on that.) Thank you for allowing the fruits of our labor play a role in your lives. Here’s to better days ahead!

Master Riddler Jesus Calderon riddles bottles in our lower caves

s our Master Riddler, Jesus Calderon handles thousands of bottles many times to drive the yeast sediment down into the neck. The procedure is slow and labor intensive. In 2009, Jesus proposed replacing our thirty-six-year-old riddling racks, which were wearing out. After extensive research, we discovered that there is only one company in the world still making them, Scierie Leban in France. We telephoned Scierie Leban and inquired about acquiring new racks. As a familyowned winery in Napa Valley, we explained, the racks are a vital component of our winemaking, and hand-riddling is part of our commitment to making hand-crafted sparkling wines using the Méthode Traditionelle. The voice on the phone answered with a simple “oui” and asked us to fax a request. Eh, voilà! The best part of this story is that after examining the old riddling racks in our caves, it turned out they were manufactured by the same Scierie Leban. Amazingly, the phone number engraved on the rack was the same. So, years from now when the next generation updates the riddling racks, they’ll know where to find the contact and phone number!

2011 J. Schram

hen Jack and Jamie Davies laid down their first Chardonnay-based signature wine in our historic caves back in 1988, they had no idea what they would call this wine when it was finally released. It would be five years before the wine needed to be labeled, so they simply called it “Cuvée X,” and waited to see what came to mind. Now over thirty-two years later, there is no way to imagine this stunning wine as named anything other than “J. Schram,” which dates back to Schramsberg’s history in the 19th century when German immigrant Jacob Schram first made his home and started a winery here on our Diamond Mountain property.

h The Reserve Story g

8 | www.schramsberg.com

2011 Reserve

T

raditionally, a reserve wine is of an especially high quality, having matured for a longer time in a wine cellar and released to the market later. Winemakers hold back or “reserve” some wine in a year when they feel the wine is especially good. A reserve may come from grapes grown in an area of the vineyard the vintner considers more special than others, or out of certain barrels that seem to be impacting the wine in different and more interesting ways. These wines are aged a bit longer and often emerge tasting richer and more opulent than the regular release. Schramsberg “Reserve” is one of our top tier Tête de Cuvée sparkling wines. It’s our premier Pinot Noirfocused brut, representing only 2% of our annual production. We release the finished Reserve nearly nine years after the fruit is harvested, yet this fruitful and dry, toasty and creamy bubbly will age gracefully for decades to come. This richly flavored and fullbodied sparkler is made from only the finest basewine lots produced each year. Schramsberg’s Reserve is sourced from our principal Pinot Noir vineyards in the North Coast appellation. These cool climate vineyards enable our growers to keep fruitful acidity in line with the sugar and flavor development through long, warm summers. The Juster Vineyard in Mendocino County’s Anderson Valley is on the Navarro River which runs along a northeast-southwest axis (as opposed to the usual north-south), and ends at the ocean, permitting fog and breezes to penetrate further inland, making for a cooler-than-normal inland microclimate. The proximity to cool fog and breezes from the San Pablo Bay makes the climate of Richburg Vineyard in Los Carneros cooler and more moderate than the

wine regions farther north in Napa Valley and Sonoma Valley. The Saltonstall Vineyard is located in the Petaluma Gap in Sonoma County, thirty miles north of San Francisco and fourteen miles from the Pacific Ocean. The hillside parcel rests in a bucolic landscape of dairy farms and sheep pastures. Planted on the valley floor the vineyard receives a great amount of fog and wind. Though primarily Pinot Noir, small amounts of select Chardonnay lots are added to the blend to lend additional backbone and length to the palate. Distinct barrel and malolactic fermented lots are also layered in to provide viscosity and depth. Each bottle is aged in contact with its yeast in our historic Diamond Mountain hillside caves for approximately eight years, affording the development of seasoned, roasted and caramelized richness.

2011 Reserve

80% Pinot Noir, 20% Chardonnay, 44% barrel fermented. Outstanding with fruit-stuffed veal, pork tenderloin, roasted duck with mango, cedar-plank grilled salmon, curried chicken salad, and as an apéritif with smoked oysters, caviar and such hard cheeses as aged Swiss Sbrinz, Sonoma Vella Jack, or Irish Coolea. e bottle our Brut Rosé in clear flint glass, a heavy and durable glass characterized by its brilliance, clarity, and highly refractive quality. The beautiful flint glass showcases the stunning amber color that we get from the red Pinot Noir grape and provides a visual elegance that is gracefully complimented by the aromas and flavors of the wine. It is an amazing sight to see bottles of Brut Rosé stacked in our historic mountain caves. Sparkling wine has long carried the stereotype of being exclusively for holiday celebrations. It’s part of tradition and a great way to add excitement to festivities. However, in the past, sparkling wines have also been perceived as formal, and we think that idea is passé. Surprisingly, sparkling wines offer wonderful characteristics that make them particularly suited for many occasions, food pairings, and in any season. You and your guests will really enjoy it anytime. After all life is a celebration!

h Defining the Flagship g

2017 Blanc de Blancs

W

e commonly describe our Blanc de Blancs as our “flagship,” because it has the distinction of being the first sparkling wine produced at Schramsberg, and the first commercial use of Chardonnay in American sparkling wine. Forty-eight years ago, in 1972, the Blanc de Blancs was chosen to be poured at the “Toast to Peace” in China, by President Nixon. It was the first time a U.S. President visited China, and the first time a California wine was served on the international stage by a U.S. president. It was a significant global event and helped put not only Schramsberg, but Napa Valley on the world map. In 2009, Hugh Davies went to China, and visited the Great Hall of the People located at the western edge of Tienanmen Square in Beijing. It’s still used for legislative and ceremonial activities and so he raised a bottle of Blanc de Blancs to commemorate the “Toast to Peace.” We’re proud of our Blanc de Blancs and its rich history. It also was poured by the White House for Queen Elizabeth II in 1975, for Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in 1981, and many more times over the past 48 years. The Blanc de Blancs has also been poured at more weddings, anniversaries and celebrations than any of our other wines.

ack and Jamie Davies brought in their first load o f Pinot Noir grapes to the winery in 1967. It was a very exciting time as they were embarking on a new chapter at the winery by making their very first Blanc de Noirs sparkling wine. They loaded the press and threw the switch, but nothing happened. Nothing would make it start. Always the showman, our consulting winemaker at the time, the infamous “Maestro” André Tchelistcheff, took Jamie’s hand and told her, “Madame, your duty is clear!” André was referring to the practice of using one’s feet to crush grapes. This age-old practice is known as pipeage, which means “punching down” grape skins. After the press had been unplugged, Jamie obliged, enthusiastically hopping up into the press and giving us one of our favorite photos (right). Our Blanc de Noirs has come a long way from that first vintage!

ate-disgorged wines, popularly known with fans as “LDs,” are crown jewels in our sparkling wine portfolio. To create these sublime wines, we hold back a small number of bottles from select vintages for extended aging in our historic caves. During that extra time, the LD wine develops exquisite richness, depth and complexity, including savory, nutty and seasoned attributes. These complement a caramelized fruitfulness and a creaminess on the palate resulting from the ultra-fine bubbles. They are delicious now and will also continue to age very well for another 20 or more years if desired. In February, we released our 2008 Blanc de Blancs LD and 2008 Blanc de Noirs LD. After ten years of contact with the yeast, these sparkling wines have gracefully developed exquisite richness, depth and complexity. They display savory, nutty and seasoned attributes, along with a caramelized, dense fruitfulness and creaminess associated with the ultra-fine bubbles. Now, as of November, we are pleased to offer our latest late disgorged sparkling wine, the 2000 Brut Napa Valley LD.

h A Unique Grape g

18 | www.schramsberg.com

2016 Crémant Demi-sec

T

he globalization of the wine industry has made the types of grapes grown around the world rather uniform. Cabernet and Chardonnay can now be found in almost every wine growing region of the planet. However, Jack and Jamie Davies made our first Crémant in 1972 from an American original, when after rigorous study, they chose the unique Flora grape to be its core component. Whenever we present our Crémant Demi-sec to an educated wine professional, they smell the wine, do a double take and then invariably ask what grape is in this? We explain that it is Flora, a cross of Gewürztraminer and Sémillon created in 1938 by Professor Olmo from University of California at Davis. Then they ask, “Who else is using this grape?” We generally barely have the time to answer “just us” before the fruitful aroma and delicious ripe, sweet flavors draws their attention back to the wine. In Schramsberg’s Crémant Demi-sec, the Flora grapes unite the fruit-forward character of Gewürztraminer with the strength, depth and minerality of Sémillon. Crémant is French for creamy and traditionally refers to a wine with light effervescence. It has approximately two-thirds the pressure of our other sparkling wines and presents a creamier texture with more exotic flavors. The sweetness in Crémant is subtle, providing a fine balance with desserts, such as fruit tarts,

poached fruits, light cakes, custards, exotic sorbets, gingerbread, and crème brûlée. It also complements a wide range of spicy Asian foods, blue cheeses, and matches especially well with foie gras. Schramsberg Crémant Demi-sec has been served at many U.S. State events, including President Reagan’s Second Inaugural Luncheon and President Obama’s White House Dinner for China’s President Jinping. Most recently, the Crémant Demi-sec was served at President Trump’s White House dinner honoring French President Macron.

Mirabelle Brut and Brut Rosé

e don’t have a definitive reason for why Jack and Jamie Davies originally called these bottlings Mirabelle. What we do know is that the wines were named after the star Mira, but why this star was chosen to be the namesake is unknown. We are sure though that there was much discussion while deciding on the name. Those that were around at the time recall that the name rose to the top of a brainstorming session, and they decided that it was a perfect fit. In Latin, mira means miraculous and mirabel means beautiful and wondrous. That certainly fits for these wines, which are loved and enjoyed by many people. We are fortunate that the name Mirabelle has become known as a consistently delicious bottle of sparkling wine. At Schramsberg, Mirabelle Brut Rosé and Mirabelle Brut are opportunities to combine Chardonnay and Pinot Noir with a selection of barrel-aged reserve wines from our library of prior vintages, which is stored in the smaller original cave beneath the winery building. These older basewine lots, which typically form 20% of the finished blend, add significant palate richness and aromatic complexity.

Single Vineyard Sparkling Wines

W

e love it when one of our sparkling wine vineyards really shines and we can make a wine solely from its grapes. It does not happen often and this year we are lucky to have two of those wines to offer you: a brut from Piedra Libre Vineyards on the Sonoma Coast and a blanc de blancs from Schwarze Vineyard in the Napa Valley Carneros. Piedra Libre Vineyards is sited among the forests of the rolling hills between Sebastopol and Bodega Bay in Sonoma County. Located between 250 and 500 feet above sea level, the vineyards are planted in Goldridge sandy loam soil, a fine grain soil with little fertility, which gives the grower full control of nutrients and minerals provided to the vine. Morning fog, partial sunny days and cool ocean breezes moderate the temperature, allowing the fruit to mature steadily throughout the growing season. Schwarze Vineyard is located on the north side of Las Amigas Road, in the southern end of the Napa Carneros AVA. The dark loamy soils along the Carneros Creek just north of the San Pablo Bay, provide the vines with a surplus of nutrients and water with which to grow. Intense flavors and gripping acidic structure are found in the grapes that are harvested from these vines. Consistently producing some of our very best Chardonnay grapes, we are pleased to have worked with the Schwarze family for 25 years.

J. Davies Estate Wines

O

ur J. Davies Diamond Mountain Estate vineyards were first planted in the 1862 by Jacob Schram and are the first hillside vineyards in Napa Valley. They were replanted to Cabernet varietals in the 1990s. Since then, our winemaking team, working with winemaking consultant Celia Welch and vineyard manager Paul Ardzrooni, have crafted a delicious range of estate red wines each year exclusively from this historic site. The J. Davies Estate Vineyards are named in honor of Jack Davies, co-founder of Schramsberg with his wife, Jamie. The vineyard blocks, totaling 46 acres, are in three isolated pockets ranging from approximately 550 to 1,000 feet in elevation. Our goal is to allow each block to express its individual natural character, picking decisions are based on the taste and structure of the fruit on the vine. The first two pockets include the Schram blocks called the Upper Vineyard and Lower Vineyard. The second area is McEachran Vineyard, on the opposite side of the property, which was first planted by Colin McEachran in 1878 after he bought the land from Schram. It was brought back into the Schramsberg fold when we purchased it in 1985. Two years ago, we added a third pocket, the five-acre Claes Vineyard lower down the hill. These are the southernmost vineyards in the Diamond Mountain District AVA. Flanked by two cool creek canyons (Nash Creek to the north and Ritchie Creek to the south) and surrounded by dense coniferous and deciduous forests, the vines here produce late-ripening, richly concentrated fruit with average yields of just two tons per acre. Meticulous attention to picking the grapes at their ultimate moment leads to 30-40 picks at harvest time. Over the past two years our upper-most twelve acres have been replanted to maximize vine health and row orientation to achieve better sun exposure. In addition, fish-friendly farming, such as no-till practices reduce soil run-off to protect the watershed and wildlife habitat.

Site-Specific Cabernet Sauvignons

O

ver the past few years, we have been making great progress with our Davies Vineyards red wine program. In 2017 we completed and opened the Davies Vineyards Tasting Room in St. Helena. Since mid-2019 we have been working in our expanded Davies Winery production building next door (left). Benefiting from knowledge we gained through the early production of J. Davies Cabernet Sauvignon wines from the Diamond Mountain estate property, our Cabernet Sauvignon bottlings from the Napa Valley offer an in-depth exploration of select pockets of the valley. Red Cap Vineyard is located at 1,900 feet in a pocket near the summit of Howell Mountain. Welldraining mountain soils produce smaller berries with higher skin to juice ratio, deepening the color of the wine while increasing tannins, leading to wines with rounded and balanced structure. Red Cap’s position above the fog line, when compared to the valley floor, has warmer evening temperatures and cooler daytime temperatures which supports greater acid retention within the grapes. This combination of soil and environmental conditions leads to an extraordinary site for growing delicious Cabernet Sauvignon. The Renteria 360 Vineyard is located in a pocket on the north end of Oakville, just south of Skellenger Lane. Our Renteria 360 wine is crafted from three distinct blocks of Cabernet Sauvignon clones 4, 15, and 169. Combined they create a wine rich in depth, color, and flavor. What makes Oakville’s climate distinctive is its transitional, mid-valley location and flat expanse of well-drained gravel soil between the Vaca and Mayacamas Mountains. Oakville is just far enough south to receive regular morning fog from the San Pablo bay, and the full benefit of the Napa Valley sun in the afternoon. Our St. Helena Cabernet Sauvignon is comprised of Cabernet Sauvignon from three vineyard pockets on the valley floor: Castellucci Vineyard on Zinfandel Lane, Dr. Gold Vineyard on Main Street and Vittorio’s Estate Vineyard off White Lane, nestled in the St. Helena appellation between the Mayacamas and Vaca Mountain range. A unique hourglass shape and distance from the cool waters of the San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean set this historic pocket apart from any other growing region in the world. With a wide fluctuation of temperature during the growing season, heat is locked in during the day and is amplified by the hillsides; at night, that same slender width funnels moderating breezes to dramatically cool the vines, sometimes by as much as 40 to 50 degrees. This extreme shift in temperature helps the fruit develop ideal balance and acidity.

Three Amigos Vineyard, Napa Valley Carneros AVA

Goorgian Vineyards, Anderson Valley AVA

Vineyard-Designate Pinot Noirs

W

e produce six vineyard-designate Pinot Noirs. The sources for this exciting set of wines range from the Hyde and Three Amigos vineyards in the Napa Valley Carneros region, to the Nobles and Perry Ranch vineyards on the Sonoma Coast, to the Ferrington and Goorgian vineyards in Anderson Valley. The Goorgian Vineyards are located at the northwestern end of the Anderson Valley, 10 miles east of the Pacific Ocean and situated on steep, rocky northwest facing slopes with an elevation ranging from 200-350 feet. Cooler daily temperatures are ideal for Pinot Noir with nightly coastal breezes dropping into the 50s, creating the perfect sugar-to-acid balance in the grapes. The Three Amigos Vineyard is a certified organic and biodynamic Pinot Noir vineyard in the Napa Valley Carneros region. A short distance from the Napa Marina, it’s a cool, foggy, and breezy location that Pinot Noir loves. Carneros - occasionally called Los Carneros - stretches across the southern portion of both Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Located just north of the San Pablo Bay, Carneros benefits from the bay’s cooling air and morning fog. The Perry Ranch Vineyard is one of three vineyards formerly and collectively known as Keefer Ranch. Perry Ranch, farmed by the Dutton Family, is in the headwaters of Green Valley Creek, on a gently sloping, well-drained, south-facing exposure. The vineyard offers fruit that profits from a long, cool hang time resulting in outstanding color and extraction. Green Valley is one of the smallest appellations in Sonoma County and lies within the southwestern part of the Russian River Valley appellation. These grapes are picked at night, trucked early to our winery in St. Helena where they are unloaded as soon as possible that same morning. They are immediately de-stemmed and put into open top vats to begin initial fermentation. With over 120 miles of cool-climate coastline available to us for vineyard sites, each bottling offers a unique expression of the specific site where it is grown. Enjoy the journey as you explore the diverse terroir of California’s North Coast.

h The Best of a Region g

Ferrington Vineyards, Anderson Valley AVA

30 | www.schramsberg.com

T

Appellation-Designate Pinot Noirs

hese wines are created by blending grapes from different vineyards in a particular American viticultural area (AVA). We continually search the Carneros of Napa County, the Sonoma Coast of Sonoma County, and the Anderson Valley in Mendocino County, for new premium vineyards for our winemaking efforts. With each vintage, we test new sites to see if the wines can both shine on their own and complement wines from other sites to be used in our AVA designated Pinot Noirs. Three vineyards are the stars in this program, anchoring the AVA-designated wine from their region. Nobles Vineyard in Fort Ross-Seaview, Sonoma Coast produces bright, complex, and richly layered Pinot Noir. It is located approximately 75 miles north of San Francisco, on the north Sonoma Coast, in the recently designated Fort Ross-Seaview AVA. With the vineyard’s moderate daytime and nighttime temperature swings, the Pinot Noir grapes follow a steady path to optimum ripeness, full flavor and color expression. The Ferrington Vineyards property, located approximately 100 miles north of San Francisco and 17 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean, is in a fertile pocket of land found at the edge of the northeastern foothills of Mendocino County’s Anderson Valley. Between 360 and 440-feet above sea level, the vines utilize over six feet of Boontling and Pinole loam soil, sustainable farming practices, and deficit irrigation to produce approximately 2.5 tons per acre of bright, complex fruit with great balance. Cool, foggy nights and steadily warming days provide a long, even growing season which delivers mature fruit depth with a vibrant, acidic backbone. The Hyde Vineyards, family-owned Pinot Noir plantings, are sited just north of Highway 12 at the base of the Mayacamas foothills in the Napa Valley Carneros AVA at the southernmost end of the Napa Valley. The grapes are favorably influenced by the nightly cooling effect provided by the closely located San Pablo Bay. The vines on the property thrive on three feet of loamy topsoil above an impenetrable clay subsoil. This soil combination provides superb control over the nutrients and water supply for the vines.

Large Formats - Great Wines

T

he word grande in the Romance languages has a dual meaning: both “large” and “great.” We can’t think of a better word to describe our magnums, three-liter, nine-liter and twelve-liter bottles, as they are indeed both larger than the regular wine bottles and hold delicious wines, both sparking and red. We offer a diverse selection of larger format bottles of our North Coast sparkling wines and J. Davies Estate Cabernet Sauvignons. These are very popular for wine lovers who understand the added benefits that come with the larger bottle. Not only does the larger bottle provide an impressive visual presentation when brought out to enjoy, the larger formats change how the wine ages over time, providing a slower, more graceful aging process. Whenever pulling out a large format bottle, we’re sure you’ll make a grande impression.
