It’s a commitment we take seriously—and one we have embraced since our beginning. We stand by that commitment now more than ever. We work daily to build diversity in our workforce, increase collaboration with minority business partners, and promote a culture that embraces new ideas and strengthens communities. We are on a journey to reach our full potential as an inclusive leader in the construction industry, and we are focused on three areas of impact to help us get there: • • •

First Diversity and Inclusion Week Brasfield & Gorrie organized the first Diversity and Inclusion Week. This annual recognition of our commitment to diversity and inclusion has grown every year and provides valuable education and engagement opportunities for employees.

Hired Director of Corporate Responsibility Natalie Kelly joined our team at Brasfield & Gorrie to serve as the Director of Corporate Responsibility and lead company diversity and inclusion efforts.

2018

Established Diversity and Inclusion Managers Roundtable This group was established by Natalie Kelly to collaborate with corporate professionals leading inclusion in their companies. The group started with six participants and has grown to more than 30 members from various industries.

EQUIP We launched EQUIP, a forum dedicated to increasing minority construction firms’ access to our teams, best practices, and upcoming project opportunities. More than 120 companies around the Southeast are registered EQUIP participants.

Started Inclusive Leadership Conversations Series These conversations provide an opportunity for our employees to learn from thought leaders, clients, and each other about important topics that help us grow as inclusive leaders.

2020

Initiated Book Studies and Listening Sessions Employees across our company share experiences and thoughts about the national dialogue around racial equity and discuss what diversity and inclusion means at Brasfield & Gorrie.

Launched Peerto-Peer Exchange Program This program creates opportunities for minority general contractor partners to come together and share common experiences, learn from one another, and discuss with Brasfield & Gorrie representatives how to further grow their businesses.

Set Strategic Priority Brasfield & Gorrie CEO Jim Gorrie identified improving our diversity and inclusion impact as a top strategic priority beginning this year. This is an opportunity to focus on progress across our regions, divisions, and departments.

Hired Supplier Diversity Manager After five years in Preconstruction, Jessica McMahan joined the Corporate Responsibility team to help grow our supplier and trade contractor diversity efforts.

Recruiting Underrepresented Talent Increasing underrepresented talent in our company is a high priority in our diversity and inclusion agenda. We are committed to achieving greater racial diversity in our workforce and are actively building relationships and executing thoughtful solutions to help us reach the next generation of construction leaders. We believe that a diverse workforce will strengthen not only our company but our community impact and client experiences.

STEPS TOWARD PROGRESS We are building our company brand and relationships with institutions, programs, and professional associations that serve diverse talent. We have expanded our recruiting efforts to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), including Alabama A&M University, Florida A&M University, Jackson State University, North Carolina A&T University, and Tennessee State University. SUPPORTING PROGRAMS CAMPUS ENGAGEMENT PARTNER PROGRAM Brasfield & Gorrie’s Campus Engagement Partner program pairs our employees with several HBCUs in order to foster meaningful relationships and recruit students into our co-op and internship programs. ACE MENTORING PROGRAM Brasfield & Gorrie is an active participant in the Architecture Construction Engineering (ACE) mentoring program. More than 15 Brasfield & Gorrie employees currently serve as ACE mentors or serve on the board of local ACE chapters.

Supplier and Trade Contractor Inclusion Our construction partners are an important part of our success. Increasing access to opportunities for minority- and women-owned companies in our business is essential to our supplier and trade contractor strategy. This starts with building trusting relationships, and we are working every day to engage and support more diverse companies.

STEPS TOWARDS PROGRESS As a part of our 2021 strategic initiative to improve our diversity and inclusion impact, we have asked every division and department to identify new minorityand women-owned business enterprise (MWBE) firms to meaningfully engage. We actively mentor and strategically partner with diverse companies and are committed to helping them advance and grow in our industry. Continuously growing our network of MWBE suppliers and trade contractors remains an important priority for our Preconstruction and project teams. We recognize that every project is an opportunity to champion diversity and ensure companies that are traditionally underutilized have an opportunity to do business with us. To better track and analyze our progress, we have built internal dashboards that allow us to regularly review our impact in this area.

SUPPORTING PROGRAMS EQUIP In 2019 we launched EQUIP, which offers small and minority trade contractors access to educational workshops on industry best practices, upcoming project opportunities, and networking opportunities with our Preconstruction and project teams. PEER-TO-PEER EXCHANGE In 2020, Brasfield & Gorrie initiated an opportunity for several Black general contractor owners to come together and share common experiences, learn from one another, and discuss how to further grow their businesses. These companies meet in bimonthly sessions facilitated by members of our Personal Development and Corporate Responsibility teams.

Inclusive Leadership Development In our company, we believe that everyone is a leader, and we all have a part to play in creating an inclusive work environment. We know that the best results, solutions to challenging problems, and great projects come from teams that are committed to working well together with every voice at the table being heard and appreciated. We focus on the inclusive leadership development of all employees to help strengthen their awareness and commitment to an inclusive culture that results in great teams. Through speaker programs, book studies, listening sessions, and a variety of education opportunities, we empower employees to embrace our diversity and inclusion mission in their everyday work.

STEPS TOWARD PROGRESS In 2020, our Corporate Responsibility and Personal Development teams began hosting virtual listening sessions with employees across our company. In these sessions, participants in various roles and locations throughout the company share personal experiences and thoughts about the national dialogue around racial equity and discuss what diversity and inclusion means at Brasfield & Gorrie. We also hosted a company-wide book study on The Person You Mean to Be by Dr. Dolly Chugh, exploring with employees how to fight bias and champion inclusion.

The discussion focused on the importance of mentorship, leading as individuals, and leaning into difficult circumstances.

SUPPORTING PROGRAMS DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION WEEK Diversity and Inclusion Week kicks off our annual recognition of efforts to advance diversity and inclusion in our company. This week builds on our daily commitment to this work with additional educational opportunities. Our commitment aligns with our SPIRIT values, and we explore that connection throughout Diversity and Inclusion Week with relevant videos, articles, and events.

The Piedmont Park Expansion project had a minority- and women-owned business enterprise participation goal of 20 percent, which the construction team surpassed, achieving 46 percent MWBE participation. In total, $8,826,850 was paid to these businesses as part of this project.

Measuring Inclusion on our Projects Brasfield & Gorrie has worked to achieve supplier and trade contractor diversity on our projects long before goals for MWBE participation were common in the construction industry. Today, we work to go beyond industry and client expectations to build great projects with diverse companies on our teams. Our internal tracking measures capture our dollar spend with firms identifying as a Women Business Enterprise (WBE), Minority Business Enterprise (MBE), Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE), Veteran-Owned Small Business (VOSB), HubZone Small Business (HUBZ), and 8(a) Small Business (8SB) or as defined by a client’s specific diversity criteria.
