GORD HAUKA’S TENNIS PROGRAMS

Summer 2012 Tennis Lessons “The Game For Life, Played For Fun” Tennis programs for adult, youth, and children are taught by instructors from Gord Hauka’s Tennis, providing fitness and tennis fun in Vancouver for over 25 years. We teach using the latest methods and newest equipment to speed up the learning and get you on the court playing tennis. Racquets can be provided for all ages and programs. Contact gordhaukastennis@gmail.com for more information. All tennis programs take place at Killarney High School Tennis Courts.

ADULT TENNIS PROGRAMS (AGES 16 AND UP)

CHILDREN & YOUTH TENNIS PROGRAMS (AGES 6-15)

Adult programs are taught as a Tennis Group Program where skills are developed through a combination of instruction and singles and doubles play. Please wear flat-soled shoes, bring a self-forgiving attitude and a racquet if you have one. Racquets can be provided if necessary. Prices include taxes and Vancouver Park Board adult court usage fees.

Have a great time this summer playing tennis as it should be. Within the age group we can accommodate all levels of play. Over the week players will have fun as they improve skills through instruction and cooperative activities. Instruction is focused on ½ court; ¾ court, and full court tennis, depending on ability. So slap on the sunscreen, put on a hat, and come out with a friend and hit and run for fun throughout. Parents are invited on Fridays to take part in low key competitive drills and games. We provide water and healthy snacks throughout the week. Rackets are available for use in all classes.

Beginner & Novice What you can do: For those who have never had lessons or tried tennis before. What you will learn: The serve, forehand, backhand, volleys, lobs and smash! Did you know UR H O O BO that Killarney H was built on MATCHING what was once a FUND bog or a fen? Building neighbourhood connections During the since 1994 month of April Killarney was Earth Makers Central as we held 11 Community Workshops to create artwork for the final mural that will be installed in the Pool Multipurpose Room. Earth Makers artist Pat Beaton, Killarney Youth Council and the volunteers from the Camosun Bog Restoration Group (aka the Crazy Boggers) brought art, science, and community together to make wonderful prints and learn about the world of bogs. The resulting mural will be installed in June 2012. We will be having a celebration and unveiling on Wednesday, June 27 from 5:007:00pm! Everyone is invited and you will have a chance to make a rubbing from the mural’s carved surface! Free community event.

WORKSHOPS SCIENCE BASED MEDICINE WORKSHOPS

Supplements / Homeopathy

Join us in the following workshops run by UBC Students for Science Based Medicine in July and August:

Acupuncture / Vaccinations Acupuncture: reviewing the evidence Acupuncture is one of the most popular and well known forms of alternative medicine. This short talk will aim to review some of the evidence behind acupuncture treatments for specific ailments: pain + nausea, infertility, and asthma. In discussing the research, how acupuncture may work, and causes of the ailments being addressed, the talk will not only address some of acupuncture's potential benefits and harms, but also provide tools to critically evaluate statements about acupuncture appearing in the popular press. Vaccines: risks, rewards, and controversy Vaccines are a widely used public health tool but have recently been controversial. Concerns over autoimmune disease, autism, and adverse reactions, along with reduced rates of infectious disease, have called into question the necessity of immunization. This talk will address many questions: how do vaccines and your immune system work? What are the risks of being vaccinated compared to catching a disease? And how can I tell whether information about vaccines is reliable or not? Room 211 – UBC Students for Science Based Medicine Jul 28 Sat

Detoxification in an alternative medicine approach claims to remove alleged, but undefined, toxins from the body. This presentation will focus on the scientific evidence and potential risks or benefits of four common alternative detox therapies: nasal irrigation, intestinal cleansing, detox diets, and foot detox. We will also explore the many mechanisms in which the body protects us from the environment. You will be provided with the necessary tools to critically evaluate the validity of the statements advertised for detoxification products and services.

Cleanse Diets Cleanse diets have become very popular, and the word ‘cleanse’ is used to refer to a wide variety of dietary practices. This talk goes through what some of these different dietary practices are, and whether or not the health benefit claims associated with them are likely to be true.
