A Message from the President of Killarney Community Centre Society Wanted: Your Great Funding Ideas! Did you know city services and amenities were severely restricted or entirely lost due to budgetary cutbacks by City Council and Parks Board? There was news coverage on the Stanley Park Petting Zoo and the Bloedel Conservatory, but many other essential services facing restrictions did not make the headlines. Community Associations were required to offset the Parks Board operating shortfall of $618,000.00, and the Killarney Board contributed $51,213.00 of the community’s funds toward this shortfall. The Board’s mandate is to offer programs and reinvest funds back into the community. We at Killarney cannot continue to fund and sustain Park Board’s budgetary shortfall - our contribution will be a one-time contribution for fiscal year 2010 only. Your Board at Killarney has reviewed ways of recouping the large loss to the bottom line. Among those ideas: increasing membership fees, applying a surtax on programs (as many other Associations have done), or placing a reduction on centre operating hours. We are aware these may be self-defeating - in an attempt to make efficiencies, we may lose our membership. For these reasons, the Killarney Board has made the decision NOT to implement these measures. Instead, we continue to explore creative funding ideas. We invite active participation from our community. If you have any comments or suggestions for creative funding, please submit your written ideas and drop them off at the front desk. Your submissions will be held in strictest confidence and be given due consideration when the Board makes its next financial decisions. I remain yours sincerely, Kim Hogan President KCCS
