article of the month “Simply Speaking-Live without excuses” By Valerie E. Hess, Christian Singles Magazine-May 2009
Mary Asked Me To teach Sunday School. Because I was just beginning to learn about the discipline of simplicity; I wanted to respond carefully, acknowledging her need but award that I was committed to serving the church in another way at that time. So I simply said, I’m sorry, but I’m not called to teach Sunday School.”
Relay for Life
WCC-Goldsboro, NC Fri., May 29th-9:00am-5:00pm
One in three people will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime. The American Cancer Society Relay For Life® is a life-changing event that brings together more than 3.5 million people across the country each year to celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against a disease that takes too much. Volunteers are needed to help the staff set luminaries on the track for this amazing cause. If anyone is available to help with this tremendous task, please contact Kim Brown via email (click link) with your name and number. Thank you in advance for all those who are able to participate in making a difference.
Vacation Bible School Whitley Church-Princeton, NC Sun., June 14th-Wed., June 17th
Okay....it’s time to have some fun--you know you want too! Vacation Bible School is just over a month away and we need your help. You wanted an excuse to let that inner youth run wild, so here it is. This is a very important event in spending time with our children. Come out to the Whitley Church campus and volunteer to bless our “little people”. Being a blessing to them will in turn be a bigger blessing to you. Please Sign up at the WC Info Desk or contact our office for more info at 7355411.
There was a moment of silence on the other end of the phone line, and then Mary said something I will never forget: “Thank you for being so honest.” In so many of her calls that evening, she had gotten lots of excuses as to why they couldn’t do it now, but maybe later because they were so busy right now, etc, etc, etc. She was so relieved to get an honest, straightforward answer, even though it was no, that she hung up feeling encouraged. The discipline of simplicity deals with all aspects of our lives, including our conversations. When we say more than is necessary to answer a request for assistance, we begin to tread on the dangerous ground of saying things that may not be entirely true so as to justify our unwillingness or inability to help, or make the other person feel better. We feel obligated to come up with some invincible excuse that will make it OK to reject the request and still be likable to the other person. Let your yes be yes and your no be no. If you don’t want to or aren’t able to do it, simply say so. You will be doing everyone a favor.
